“Just before The Damned recorded ‘Strawberries’, I took Dave and Laurie to Borley Rectory which is supposed to be the most haunted church in England. Apparently, a tape recorder which was once left on in the church overnight had all these weird, eerie sounds on it the next day, and voices. So I thought ‘I’ll go up there and find out for myself’. I met Dave and Laurie and off we set. It’s on the Suffolk /Norfolk border, miles from anywhere. Eventually we found the place and it was pitch black, and it was Walpurgisnacht, the night of the witches. We arrived in the churchyard and believe it or not, we reached the door just as the clock struck midnight. It was very sinister and eerie. The door creaked open and I went in first and as I went in I made a noise. Dave came through the door after me and as he did, a light comes up from inside the church and hits him full in the face. The next thing we know, there’s three Americans in absolute terror flying out of the church. They had a camera set up on a tripod and they were sitting in the most haunted church in England waiting for an apparition. On the stroke of midnight, they hear this creaking sound and a noise behind them and by the time they turned round, Dave was coming through the door…”
