context:
since this entire remix is in hindi/punjabi, i want to contextualize it so that everyone knows the purpose behind the audio choices. firstly, the base track used is azadi: this is a song that was first popularized by the bollywood movie gully boy by zoya akhtar. while the movie itself is a biographical drama based loosely on the life of the real rapper DIVINE, this song in particular is the most political one in the soundtrack. it’s a frank lay-down of the political and economic corruption pervading the lower classes in the country, and blatantly points fingers at the politicians in power who are responsible for it all.
the first set of voice clips embedded in the beat of the song belong to bjp mla raja singh as he talks about his dream of a “hindu rashtra” — a pure hindu country. this rhetoric belongs largely to the far-right of india, who believe the country is best represented through a religious homogeneity despite its documented constitutional secularism.
the second set of voice clips is from amit shah: the home minister of the country. he is notorious for many reasons, but in this clip the emphasis is on the fact that he mentions nearly every single “large” religion in the country except islam.
the third set of voice clips is from the prime minister narendra modi as he defended the CAA (citizenship amendment act) proposed in parliament in late 2019. the amendment was proposed in conjunction with the NRC (national register of citizens). the long-term impact: the national register of citizens would be formed on the basis that people had reliable documentation (birth certificates/property papers) to show that they are legal citizens of the country.if they do not have this documentation, they are pushed into a different section.
with the CAA, buddhists, christians, hindus, jains, parsis, and sikhs who migrated or sought refuge in india from afghanistan, bangladesh, and pakistan prior to 2014 and can prove their presence prior to 2014 are granted a fast track to citizenship. the only people left are the muslims who may have lost documentation due to the partition or because of their low-income backgrounds; they cannot be covered by the CAA and are thus left to the government’s jurisdiction. an enactment of this combination occurred in the state of assam, where many muslims were kept in “detainment camps.”
the fourth set of voice clips is from a reporter reporting on the police-led attacks on jamia milia islamia university in the capital of new delhi. students were lathi-charged (beaten with sticks) and harrassed or abused by police as well as other people who entered their campus. this was in light of the CAA-NRC protects that erupted all over the country against the bill. jamia was targeted due to his islamic history and its political activism.
the fifth set of voice clips is from bjp mp anurag thakur’s political rally: “desh ke gaddaron ko / goli maaron saalo ko.” loosely translates to: “shoot the goddamn traitors to this country.” this was shortly before the delhi pogrom in february 2020 where hindu mobs targeted muslim homes in north east delhi and incited violence. 53 were killed, 2/3rd were muslim.
finally, the remix ends with a voice clip from an unnamed protestor which translates to, “remove the lens of religion; the entirety of India is in danger.”

reflection: music, audio, podcasts, theme song
the theme song
this took a lot of research and deliberation, along with three friend consultations, but i think i found one that works. it’s everybody wants to rule the world covered by lorde.
podcasts
i used to listen to a couple of lifestyle podcasts a few years ago, but i’m not much of a podcast listener anymore. i’d rather read or watch, as audio alone is something i find hard to focus on. it works better as a supplementary medium for me. the podcast i did listen to often was thick & thin by katy bellotte. it had a opening theme song and katy’s voice was very emotive so it was more casual and relaxed as it felt like listening to a friend over facetime. there’s almost no additional audio mixing.
film sound
we watching _apocalypse now! _for a literature/media class about trauma in my sophomore year of undergrad and the audio mixing of that film is still stuck in my head; particularly the scene of when they mix regular traffic sounds with the gunshots and violence of war. i also enjoy the audio mixing in sci-fi movies a lot; interstellar (of course) and the star wars franchise come to mind. i like musicals too, and they have the most diegetic music ever.
art installations
i went to three of fotografiska’s exhibitions a couple weeks ago: warhol, miles aldrige, and ruth orkin. all the exhibits were dark, but an excellent way the curators would absorb you into the time period of the artists was through the music. warhol’s exhibit had funky disco instrumentals playing whereas orkin was a lot more sober (and they were on the same floor!) the music played a huge role in interpreting the photographs and generally the artist’s vibe.
music
my music library (which was wiped out a week ago so whatever i remember is legitimately stuff i listen to) is a lot of taylor swift, ariana grande, chase atlantic, arctic monkeys, prateek kuhad, mgk but the tickets to my downfall era, fall out boy, lady gaga, & the weeknd.
tv sound
one of my favorite tv series is made in heaven on amazon prime by zoya akhtar. the sound design in this show is absolutely impeccable – especially the scoring. unlike obvious melodies that tell you exactly how to feel, the music in this show takes you on an emotional journey by exploring nearly every single emotional undertone in an episode. just like its characters and story, the music is equally complex which is something i really admire.

Audio
i was at the met and there was a baby whining with an echo that sounded really creepy; could be great for an american horror story scene

Conversation
soundscape: take 2
the whirr of a laptop overworked
aggressive typing and clicking — someone’s late on a submission it seems
footsteps frantically running in and out
“did you know she came back to the dorm at 4 am last night?” whisper
a loud shush
“don't be so loud what some friend of hers someone hears us?”
moving a chair backwards
getting up from the chair — creak creak creak
a faint bloop from a phone; someone’s messaging
tuk tuk tuk
click click click - frantic saving of a file
thud thud, someone puts down books on a table
footsteps getting louder behind me
walking left to right
“no that’s the wrong way!”
“we can’t sit hear it’s too quiet”
the closing of an airpods case
a loud sigh
“do you think i can nap here?”
“go for it”
a door opens
glug glug glug — water
standing up
rummaging through a bag
plastic shuffling
footsteps moving away
footsteps back again
“forgot something”
footsteps moving away again
very loud squeaking shoes
“hi!!”
“hi…”
“have you done the reading yet?”
footsteps
door opens
slowly closes
thud
giggling in a far corner
“if we put this in the scanner…”
the crrrr of a printer running behind me
“yeah that’s the right way”
a fake laugh

in response to true north
One word to describe the watching experience of this film: uncanny. If you concentrate just on the additional sound mixing (not the narration or the Inuit throat singing), everything sounds strangely familiar. There’s an ambiguity to the sounds which make them open to interpretation; for example, in the beginning, there are sounds that echo footsteps but also the thud of bodies, the breaking of ice, and percussion.
I actually find the juxtaposition of this with the singing to be an interesting choice considering the history of the expedition recreated in this film. The Inuit were the reason the expedition was possible as they provided indigenous knowledge of the land and the cold through Matthew Henson as the interpreter. They were mistreated by Robert E. Peary.
The three different channels contribute to the uncanny quality of the film as well. In a few landscape shots, only two out of the three channels line up perfectly; a third channel is always just slightly skewed or incongruous. This interrupts what would have otherwise been a perfect panorama across three screens. Because that landscape looks familiar enough but not quite, it contributes to the uncanniness of the film.
Perhaps that was one of Julien’s objectives with this film and his narrative of the North Pole expedition — the biting cold and isolation are familiar but not enough, making the entire screening uncanny and disorienting, but also grappling with the racist and colonialist retelling of the first man on the North Pole.
