This was our groups finished presentation, and I think we all did really well! I felt that there was plenty of information provided for people to read whilst it was being presented as well as enough for us to expand on.

What mediums did Joe Pitt use to create the Gobblewonker?
Whilst Joe isn’t very specific about what mediums he uses and he hasn’t posted much on his progress on creating the Gobblewonker, I decided to dig into his tumblr account to see what mediums he has used for other projects so that this can be linked to the medium used for the Gobblewonker.
The beginning result I believe must of been quick sketches before developing it further and we can see him use this technique for when he was animating a part of the opening to gravity falls before finalising it with colour and stronger lines.

From both the character design sheet and the finalised animated scene we can clearly see from the bold lines and colours and in particular in the animated sequence, a use of special effects to make the eyes glow, I think that it is very clear that the finalised Gobblewonker was created using 2D digital animation.
I think by using 2D digital animation, it suits scenes such as this much better than if it was 2D traditional animation as having the ability to have the minor details that make a big impact on these episodes such as the mist and the glowing eyes much more easily accessible than if it all were to be hand drawn and painted in frame by frame hoping that the paint will give you the same effect on each page.

What is the gobblewonker?
Much like the Lochness monster, we see in the episode ‘The legend of the gobblewonder’ is surrounded with myth and legend, with a reward of $500 to whoever can catch the gobblewonker!
However further on in the episode, we discover that the gobblewonker Dipper and the gang were chasing was actually a fake.
This story very much links closely to the legend of the Lochness monster- with the sightings that turn out to be fake.
http://hoaxes.org/archive/display/category/loch_ness_monster
For example, probably the most famous photo of a Lochness sighting was ‘The surgeons photo’ which was released in 1933.

Many people believed this to be the real monster until 1984 in which a man named ‘Stewart Campell’ believed this to just of been a marine animal.
However, he was wrong! In 1994, the man who originally took this photo back in 1934 confessed that the Lochness photo was just a picture of a ‘toy submarine outfitted with a sea-serpent head’.
However, there is still a huge following of the Lochness monster that believe they have sighted the creature dating back from information gathered from 565AD unti this present day!
The Lochness monster is believed to of been sighted between ‘Loch Dochfour to Fort Augustus’ in Scotland. (https://www.visitscotland.com/info/towns-villages/loch-ness-p868181)
We see both of these contrasts with the gobblewonker, the fake gobblewonker that was built by Old Man McGucke.
However, right towards the end of the episode we are shown the real ‘gobblewonker’ swimming, in a episode later shown called “society of the blind eye’ Old Man McGucke even says he saw "something big" at the lake. This is highly directed at the Gobblewonker.
I also looked furthur into mythical creatures as I wanted to find out where the gobblewonker gets its dragon like appearence and came across the ‘Ogopogo’.
The Ogopogo is the equivalent of Scotland’s Lochness monster and it is found in ‘ Canada's Lake Okanagan’. (http://www.livescience.com/42399-ogopogo.html). Both the Lochness and the Ogopogo are sighted in lakes and/or rivers and this is represented in the Gobblewonker.

The appearance of the Ogopogo is much more dragon like when compared to artists interpretations of the Lochness monster which has much more of an appearance of something prehistoric such as a dinosaur.
We can see this the appearence of the Gobblewonker, however I do believe it shares more of the traits of the Ogopogo as its dragon like features are a lot more prominent than the dinosaur appearance.
However, I think it shares the same ‘high status’ as the legend of the Lochness monster as the Ogopogo is not quite as famous as the Lochness! We can see the Gobblewonker is very sorted after with a high reward, just like the Lochness is!

Who created/designed the gobblewonker?
http://joedrawsstuff.tumblr.com/page/9
1/4/17
Joe Pitt was the one who created the gobblewonker as well as being a key character designer as well as one of the directors for gravity falls. He is now a storyboard artist at dreamworks but had worked on other disney programmes such as a disney short called ‘a sock burglar: A Mickey mouse cartoon’.
He has also worked on a project called Wander over Yander where his skills in creating monsters is seen again.
We can see that his style in creating monsters has a very different style everytime keeping each monster very individual and unique, this can even be seen in the monster designs in gravity falls.
However I decided to focus on the gobblewonker as it was my favourite design out of all the characters because of its dragon like design mixed with the Lochness monster.

which character am I focusing on from gravity falls and why?

I really love creature/monster design, so I really wanted to focus on this and gravity falls has some fantastic creature/monster designs!
However I really liked the gobblewonker because it shares very similar traits to a dragon as well as having distinct features of the lochness monster. In fact the first episode it is featured in hints at this, being called ‘The legend of the gobblewonder’- a spin off title to that of ‘The legend of the Lochness monster’.
I also think that this is one of Joe Pitt’s best designed monsters in the story so I wanted to try and find out more on how he came up with this idea and what inspired him and the process in creating the Gobblewonker.
**7/5/17**
Coming back to my research, I discovered that whilst my main focus was on this one character, the research that I did conduct would also be able to apply to how he creates all his designs because of the amount of research I had to conduct on how Joe creates his characters (literally following in his footsteps on how to create a character!) because of the lack of information he provides on his blog as well as doing no interviews with anyone.

What is Gravity falls?
31/3/17
Gravity falls is a disney series created by Alex Hirsch that started in 2012 and ended in 2016 and aired 40 episodes, it is about ‘Twin siblings Dipper and Mabel Pines spend the summer at their uncle's tourist trap in the enigmatic town of Gravity Falls.’ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1865718/
It follows the twins as they start to discover the weird and mythical things that happen in their uncle’s town (along with their sidekick soo’s!). They often find themselves encountering supernatural and legendary creatures (Gnomes, Griffons etc). They tackle and solve these mystery's using a strange red book that Dipper has that was found in a forest and describes many of the supernatural occurrences that happen in gravity falls.

Speaking to Helen, we decided that instead on focusing on a particular series (which we had originally had the idea of speaking about characters in gravity falls) we decided instead we would look into different series and particular artists that help create the characters.
I am sticking to gravity falls as originally I intended to look both into Joe Kitt (a character designer in gravity falls) and look into a particular character he had created and how he morphed it into its final design and the process he did to do this.

In our group chat, we decided that we are going to focus on particular characters in the series and write about who or what the character is, the artists that created them and why we chose this character.

Today we were put into groups based on our interests in particular roles in the animation industry. My group is looking into 2D based animation and a large amount of us are interested in character design.
We decided to mainly focus on the series gravity falls as it has a nice collection of differently designed characters with a wide range to look into from monsters to people.

This was my groups presentation and I was able to add into the example of an art director.
Although I would of liked to of added in more, the group of people I was with were much more confident about the position we were researching then I was so therefore contributed a lot more and after looking into it, I probably won’t be going for an art director job as a future possibility as you have to have a strong sense of leadership to do this, whereas I just like to work alongside others or just by myself getting on with a small project or task I have been given.
There were some extra things that I added to this for example finding out how much an art director makes in America in different cities, but when it came to reading out the presentation it had been cut, so I assumed that no one found it relevant enough to be added in.
So after this presentation I definitely decided against carrying on with researching about the role of an art director as I just don’t have that sternness or harsh, critiquing leadership you need to be able to full fill this role.

Art Directors
I decided to research into art directors and came across Kenneth Anderson.
Kenneth Anderson directed and animated on films for disney such as the sword in the stone, fantasia, snow white and the seven dwarfs and Pinocchio.
He was so successful in his animating and production, in 1991 he was awarded the winner of the Disney Legends award for Animation & Imagineering.
http://www.bizjournals.com/bizjournals/on-numbers/scott-thomas/2013/04/pay-in-group-063.html I also discovered this website which tells us how much an art director gets in different cities and states in America.

What is an art director?
‘’An art director will typically do the following:
Determine how best to represent a concept visually
Determine which photographs, art, or other design elements to use
Develop the overall look or style of a publication, advertising campaign, or theater, television, or film set
Supervise design staff
Review and approve designs, artwork, photography, and graphics developed by staff members
Talk to clients to develop an artistic approach and style
Coordinate activities with other artistic or creative departments
Develop detailed budgets and timelines
Present designs to clients for approval’’
From what I understand here, an art director over looks everything on the production team to make sure everything is going correctly and if the outcome is a good enough outcome.

Starting off our project, we had to work in groups to look up a particular role in the animation industry that we would be interested in, however I’m not to sure what exactly I want to do in the animation industry only that I’m very keen on becoming a freelance artist and doing another job alongside it.
So we decided on art director as it was a role I never knew existed so thought it would be really interesting to research into.
