Hi! So I have trouble coming up with ideas for how to flesh out my characters and the plot. My characters are very 2D and I never know what should happen next. Do you have any advice for how to get the creative juices flowing?

Fleshing Out Flat Characters

If you haven’t already, take a spin through my character section. The best way to flesh out your character is to figure out the following:

their three best personality traits

their best talents/skills

their worst flaws

what others think of them

what they think of themselves

the internal flaw that holds them back and must change

how this flaw affects their daily life

what caused this flaw to exist

the big life lesson they must learn before they can change

what their life has been like so far

who their family and friends are

what their normal/daily life is like when the story starts

Once I have all of this figured out, I love to cast my characters. I have two rules for casting: 1) All of the above has to be figured out first, as well as appearance (preferably), 2) Try to avoid using actors/models you’re really familiar with. Faceclaim lists/sites are helpful.

Casting is a great way to round out your characters in your mind, because just as with reading a book when you’ve already seen the movie, your brain tends to create an amalgam of the movie actor and what you personally imagine as you read. The same happens here. Your brain has probably already created an image of this character, so the actor/model will meld with that to create a really solid version in your head. It will be much easier to imagine them talking, moving, and reacting.

Scott was always nervous on his first day on set, no matter how long he was in the industry for, and as he was introduced to his various fellow cast members, all he could do was offer a friendly smile and hope that they would get along. The last person he was introduced to was a man who appeared a little older than himself, and he approached with his lips turned up in his trademark smile. 

“Hi, I’m Scott Carver. It’s lovely to meet you.” 

as luca had gotten older, he’d started booking more tv and movie gigs - things he’d never been super interested in. however, once he’d started doing then, he liked them a lot more. they offered him a different opportunity to act and sometimes offered him more flexibility for his kids. he had been texting his ex about their kids when he noticed someone approaching. he gave him a wide smile and held out his hand, “i’m luca boniello. you might’ve seen brooks boniello, but long story short, i use my middle name. anyways! hi! how’re you, scott?”

Lucas felt a warm sensation flutter through him at the kiss to his cheek. This inspired him to reach over and place his hand on top of Jasper’s for a moment. “You’re welcome,” he said softly, a smile pulling at his lips as he gazed into Jasper’s eyes. “What do you mean you don’t think you’re cute?” he asked. “You are extremely hot to me. I mean, I’ve had butterflies in my stomach for days thinking about this.” He laughed and then paused. “I told you I’m not used to dating… so I kind of forgot something,” he informed him. Then, letting his eyes flicker down to Jasper’s lips, he let them flicker back up into his eyes to gauge his reaction, biting his lip slightly. An amused but affectionate smile appeared on his face as he leaned in to press a kiss to Jasper’s lips. “Hi,” he murmured as he pulled away. 

Chuckling softly. “Yeah, you have to have a wife. But you can romance the same sex later on in the game. But I can’t say anything else without spoiling it.” He shrugged. “I’m more of a husband guy myself, too…” he trailed off, smiling to himself as he gazed at the screen. 

“i think that i’m a one eyed sort of dorky looking boy, but it’s very sweet that you think i’m hot.” jasper leaned closer to lucas, leaving the controller in his lap and grinning cheekily, “you’re pretty hot yourself... much hotter than me. and out of my league.” he returned the soft kiss, a gently hand sliding up to rest on lucas’ cheek with a thumb running over his cheek bone, “can we do that all night? who needs video games when we can do that...?” he gave him another kiss before moving to pick the controller up, wrinkling his nose, “that’s lame. i want a husband - not to cheat on my wife. but... hey. maybe my alter ego is a cheater. or maybe he’s just straight. i’m not sure which is scarier.” he looked over at him with a smile, “yeah?”

Lucas grabbed two beers and hurried back to the living room, smiling at Jasper as he handed him the beer. He sat relatively close to him on the couch, only a couple inches away from him. He bit his lip as he looked down at Jasper’s hands, wanting to take his hand. But deciding not to, instead, focusing his eyes on the screen. “So do you want your character to look like you, or do you want to just make up a character?” There were two characters you could play, the male or the female – the husband or the wife. Lucas cracked his beer open and took a swig. “Mm–I like that hairstyle for you,” he murmured. “You can change your spouse’s appearance too.” 

jasper smiled slightly when lucas returned, dropping his feet back onto the ground and leaning over to kiss his cheek. “thank you for the beer, by the way.” he wanted to tuck himself into lucas’ side but wasn’t sure if they were there yet, so he just wrinkled his nose, “i mean, i don’t think i’m that cute so maybe... a hotter version of me?” he clicked through the the hairstyles before landing back on the one lucas had liked, “i like this one best too... do i have to have a wife? that’s annoying. so heteronormative.” he looked up at lucas, eyelashes fluttering slightly, “i’m more of a husband guy myself, but hey.”

Lucas could still feel Jasper’s lips against his from their kiss after their first date. He was pleasant surprised how well the tinder date had gone. It was an awesome, solid date and Lucas was genuinely interested and crushing on the other. While initially intimidated, he became the very opposite and settled into being relaxed and open with Jasper after a little while. Now, after the talk of a second date, the two were at Lucas’ apartment starting the beginning of the game Fallout 4, an open-world RPG, zombie game. Lucas had gone to the kitchen to fetch them some drinks, though secretly also wanting to take a breath because he was nervous and excited at the same time at having the other at his apartment. He heard the end of the intro to the game before the part where Jasper would create his character would pop up. War. War never changes. “Is a beer good? Or would you like water? I have some wine in here too…” he called to Jasper as he shuffled through his fridge. 

jasper never had high hopes regarding tinder dates - they almost always ended poorly. he was pleasantly surprised, however, when his date with lucas ended well. he was sweet and funny - two things that jasper found endearing in a man. he was glad to be spending their second date at lucas’ place because it made it feel a little less formal - like something jasper could be a little more comfortable doing. he was settled into the left side of the couch, legs pulled up and chin resting on his knees. he was holding the controller around his knees, humming softly, “beer is perfect, thank you. but also... whatever you’re drinking is good with me. get back in here and help me choose!”
