I've Been Absent for A Bit...
Life continues on with strange bumps and turns. I was going broke with inflation and living only on social security so I took the plunge and returned to work at WalMart. After 30 years away, some things have changed and some have remained stagnate. Life teaches you new lessons at this age. Caleigh and I continue to rattle around in this big old house and with temps in the high 90s and no air…

Bat!
I wrote this in 2019 but I am at it again, chasing bats through the house. I have had 3 bats in 2 months! I now use a bug zapper racquet to go after the little fiends. Oh, yeah…then there was this little event tonight. Around 9 PM, I was talking to Gary on the phone when all of a sudden a bat dive-bombed me. Suddenly I was on bat detail. I couldn’t find the tennis racquet that John Nordgaard…

2020: Covid 19 & Me
We all remember those days. The days of shutdowns, masks and untried vaccinations. I sure do. Let me tell you, if you can tough it through that, you can pretty much conquer anything. For me it began November 2019, Thanksgiving Day. I wandered upstairs to inform my husband I had made lunch. We had no plans, we weren’t going anywhere, it was just us two, no one else. His drinking had hit an all…

Dog Parenthood
Mass Image Compressor Compressed this image. https://sourceforge.net/projects/icompress/ with Quality:61 My USPS guy dropped off packages at the north patio this morning in the usual lawn chair stationed there. The door opens to my three season porch. My yellow lab was sleeping peacefully on the couch next to me. She was up like a shot, barking her fool head off, racing for the door to the…

Could someone please tell me why there are kids 11 – 14 running around at 1:00 AM stealing cars and then being shot by a second car following them using a automatic weapon. Four kids were shot out of the five kids. One girl was shot in the head and is in critical condition. Where are those parents?? This is just ridiculous. Then it turns out that two of the five kids were arrested for car theft…

Elections Heartaches.
With the election frenzy in full swing, try to remember that not everyone has had the same life experiences, opportunities, or upbringing as you. Even siblings can have very different lives and disagree but don’t let it fracture your family. Your position in the family may have been completely different than another sibling. Age difference, a family moving to a different place and deaths within…

Into Each Life a Little Rain Must Fall
And it sure has been falling here in western Minnesota this summer. The weeds are outpacing the flowers in my gardens and a few flowers simply drowned out or succumbed to fungus problems. I need to go out again today and tackle the weeds again and grass has grown into my daylilies and irises trying to choke out the perennials. I have ugly orange daylilies overtaking the very pretty ones. I had…

Ask Me if I Care...
I am very tired of being bombarded with all the news out of Hollywood the stars who are promoting their favorite politician. I don’t care what George Clooney (who lives between Lake Como Italy and his English Manor in England) thinks of our nation’s politics. I am tired of Tom Cruise, Jennifer Aniston, Katy Perry, John Legend, Taylor Swift, Debra Messing, Meghan Markle…the list is endless. I…

I Just Couldn't Get Excited About the Olympics
The last few Olympics have brought scandal with participants losing medals and all around hype that went nowhere. This year felt like another round of disasters. I never dreamed it would be overshadowed by the question of the opening ceremony depicting the painting of “The Last Supper” with drag queens who were actually depicting pagan gods designed to represent ‘inclusion’ and the wokeness of…

Winter Memories
(I wrote this a couple of years ago on a very cold Minnesota day. Today it is 91 degrees on the last day of July.) This time of year puts me in mind of my grandparents cabin in northern Minnesota. I stroll through the cabin once again and recall the little cast iron stove that heated the three main rooms; the living room, kitchen and bedroom. The back bedroom, which had been my brother’s was…

Caleigh here: Let me tell you how mean she is!
My baby picture at 8 weeks I’m talking about my dog-mom who usually writes here. She is so mean. Today she took my favorite rug and blankets, she took my toys and put them in the big square box that makes things wet and drippy. Didn’t she know how long it took me to get all the smells just right on my things and it took a lot of doing to get just the right amount of dirt on them! When she took…

Spicer Leigh the Cat
(This written several years ago) She was a good cat and lived with us 21 years. Today her body was tired and her eyes had dulled. It was time to say good-bye.She will be waiting at the Rainbow Bridge for us. “PIPPIN: I didn’t think it would end this way. GANDALF: End? No, the journey doesn’t end here. Death is just another path, one that we all must take. The grey rain-curtain of this world…

Its Been a Rough Day Today
Every four weeks I need to have an IV infusion of Gammagard. I drive two and a half hours to Mankato for the procedure. I get tired, the med wipes me out and I have now learned to take it easy the following day. Today was the second day after the infusion and I was totally wiped out. I took two naps which is really unusual for me. I missed a summer get-together of friends and my great-grandson’s…

Inflation? Really? Try Grocery Shopping for Proof
I was forced to go grocery shopping yesterday and pick up meds. As I pushed my cart through the foods, I noticed more and more people shopping with lists and calculators. I was one of them. I saw people hesitate at various ‘frivolous’ foods and then pass them buy. I noticed there was less pop, pizza and frozen snacks in the various carts I passed. One lady told her husband to put the second bag…

Dragging Myself Back Out of the Depths of Depression
(written 2 years ago) It’s been six long, painful years since my son died. That episode started the cracks in our family. The splintering grew more evident but I wasn’t there mentally to patch them before the cracks widened into large gaps. Usually I have been the one to keep the family going and to be there for their needs. This time I didn’t see the cracks threatening to break wide open. I had…

This Inflation is Killing Me
I live on social security only, $2000 a month. Try to make that stretch these days. My groceries have gone up about 30%, natural gas is up, so is electricity and gas for my car. Plus, talk about the price of prescription drugs and its enough to make you ill. Health insurance, house insurance and drug insurance goes up more each year. I am not sure what world the politicians are living in but it…

To Pot or Not Pot, That is the Question
Its a hot, steamy day in Minnesota and even after torrential rains the past couple weeks, my plants need watering. The ones in pots are already setting up like cement. Today’s potting ‘soil’ has no soil in it at all. Most of them consist of sphaghum peat moss, coir fiber, perilite, vermiculite, sand, limestone, compost, compost wood chips and fertilizers. There are special soils for specialty…
