Megacity Power Pro-Am Day 4 RECAP
Tumblr media
July 2, 2013 (DAY 4) Megacity Power Pro-Am RECAP Our first game of Day 4 featured Team Yellow matching up against Team Blue. At the half, Yellow’s O’Neil Mangal already had 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the floor and a perfect 6-of-6 from the charity stripe as his team led, 58-47. Yellow would strike a 10-2 run to start the 3rd quarter, and despite a late game rally by Team Blue, they managed to secure a 101-93 victory. Team Yellow kept their energy level up at both ends from start to finish, shooting 49% from the field collectively and limiting their opponents to just 42% on the night. They had a +11 advantage on the boards and were able to get to the freethrow line 23 times (12 more attempts than their opponents), connecting on a high percentage (20-of-23). Mangal was a nightmare down low, racking up 31 points on 11-of-16 from the field to go along with 11 rebounds and 2 blocks. Jermaine Anderson contributed 23 points which included 4 from deep, 6 boards and 4 helpers. Olu Ashaolu registered a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds. For Team Blue, Alex Johnson and Branko Veljovic tallied 20 points apiece, Jevohn Shepherd recorded 17 points and 6 dimes. Tyrell Vernon pitched in 14 points and 9 dimes, and Tyrone Berry added 8 points and a team high 10 rebounds. In the second game of the night, we witnessed Team Red square off against Team Black. Team Red trailed at the half, 46-24, despite Mark Gomillia’s 20 point (7-of-8 fg shooting) 1st half performance. Black would go on a 7-0 run right out of the gates capped off with a corner three by Mark Perrin, forcing Red to burn an early timeout. Tut Ruach would hit Stefan Haynes coming off a pick-and-roll as Haynes threw down a nasty two-handed flush to increase the cushion to 20 points late in the second half as Black went on to win this one, 98-76. Team Black’s Tramar Sutherland was a stat sheet stuffer in this one with 28 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 6 steals and 2 blocks. Tut Ruach is the first Megacity Power Pro-Am player to record a triple-double, with 14 points, 10 boards and 10 assists. Mark Perrin came up just shy of a triple-double himself, registering 23 points, 9 boards and 8 helpers. As a team, they had very few problems putting the ball in the hole, moving the ball well for quality looks and constantly attacking the rim, shooting 56% on the night, despite a less than stellar shooting performance from beyond the arc. Team Red’s Mark Gomillia finished the night with a team high 26 points and 3 assists. Shawn Conley picked up a double-double with 20 and 10. In the final matchup of the night, Team Orange faced off against Team Green. Green pushed out to a double-digit lead by the end of the 1st half, 40-29. A two-handed tomahawk slam by big man Iffy Ehirim at the 6:35 mark of the 3rd quarter increased the margin to 14 points. Orange would try to rally back in the 4th quarter with an 8-2 run that narrowed the gap back to double-digits, but Green’s solid execution down the stretch would help them pull back away for a convincing 85-68 victory. Team Green shot 48% from the field and out-rebounded the opposition by a whopping +17 margin. They moved the rock well, combining for 27 assists on 33 made field goals. Iffy Ehirim tallied 18 points on 9-of-13 shooting to go along with 7 boards and 3 steals. Steve Bucknell came off the bench and contributed in a big way with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Mattew Zobriowski finished with 18 and 7. Aaron Duncan came up short of a triple-double with 9 points, 10 boards and 12 helpers. Atill Williams finished with 17 points and 9 assists. For Orange, Devoe Joseph was the game high scorer with 22 points to go along with 7 boards and 4 steals. Manny Campbell shot the ball efficiently with 18 points on 9-of-15 shooting while also contributing 4 boards and 3 steals.

Megacity Power Pro-Am Day 3 RECAP
Tumblr media
Sun July 30, 2013 (Day 3) Megacity Power Pro-Am RECAPS Team Green edge Team Yellow in heart pounding finish – This was a wild one from start to finish. Team Yellow would assume a 19-15 lead at the end of the first quarter, but that lead was erased by halftime with Team Green’s Shawn Francis hitting a buzzer beating fadeaway jumper from the right baseline that helped his squad to a 40-39 lead. Yellow would re-take the lead as Yannick Walcott began to heat up from the field, scoring 8 points in that quarter alone with his team out in front, 60-56. Team Green would fall behind by as much as 10 points, but pulled back within striking distance in the closing moments of regulation. They eventually took the lead with Aaron Duncan hitting a tough off-balance mid-range jumper, giving his squad a 2 point lead with less than a minute to go. Former Raptor Alvin Williams would dribble out the clock, drove down the middle of the lane and put up a 360 lay-in under duress which fell just short, as Green held on and completed the hard fought comeback win, 78-76. Green’s Atill Williams was the team high scorer with 18 points, which included a couple of clutch three-pointers down the stretch. Aaron Duncan added 11 points, 10 dimes and 6 boards, and Denny McDonald also contributed a double-double with 10 and 11. Yellow’s Aaron Kumar registered a game high 19 points on 8-of-16 shooting from the floor. O’Neil Mangal was solid across the board with 13 points, 10 boards and 3 blocks. Alvin Williams proved to everyone in attendance he can still ball, hitting some key shots in the 2nd half, posting 11 points, 6 boards and 2 steals despite the loss. Team Blue pull out narrow win over Team Black - For the 2nd game of the day we witnessed Team Black square off against Team Blue – Dusan Virijevic tallied a game high 24 points and 12 boards, and Tyrell Vernon picked apart the D for 23 points and 6 helpers as Team Blue hung on for a 74-71 victory. Despite being a bit careless with the rock (20 turnovers) and -9 (42-33) in the rebounding department, Blue shot 44 percent from the field and were able to get to the freethrow line 14 more times than their opponents, knocking down 13-of-17 attempts. Team Black’s Tut Ruach, who played professional ball first in Germany, then in the NBL, then in Sweden, posted a team high 17 points to go along with 10 boards, 5 assists and 3 steals. Stefan Haynes was assertive in the paint with 10 points, 2 blocks and a team high 12 rebounds. Tramar Sutherland added 10 points and 3 steals. This Tuesday Team Black will look to bounce back from this tough loss when they battle against the 2-1 Team Red at 8:40PM. Team Blue will look to improve to 3-1 when they meet Team Yellow (0-2) at 7:20PM. 4 Team Red players score in double figures as Red defeat Orange, 80-71. The final bout of the day featured Team Orange taking on Team Red. Orange battled hard despite being undermanned, missing some key players in the 6 man rotation. They trailed by double figures for a majority of the game, but made a late push in the 4th quarter, slicing the margin to just 5 points with 4 and a half minutes to go. Jonathan Semira would foul out moments later and Team Red would pull away for an 80-71 victory. Jeremy Alleyne poured in a game high 19 points which included 3-of-4 from three-point territory. Mark Gomillia came off the bench and contributed in a big way with 16 points, shooting perfect 6-of-6 from the charity stripe and hauling in 8 rebounds. Shawn Conley registered a double-double with 14 and 13, and point guard Justin Dennis racked up 14 points, 5 boards and 4 helpers. For Orange, Jon Semira was a key contributor with 13 points, 5 dimes and 4 boards. Michael Ranger pitched in a double-double with 12 points, 10 boards and a game high 5 steals. Sinisa Bjelica added 14 points which included 4-of-7 shooting from beyond the arc. Team rebounding was a big factor in this one as Red won the battle of the boards with a +12 advantage (47-35) on the glass. Team Orange was also without PG Manny Campbell and FC Shamus Ferguson who combined for 37 points, 15 rebounds and 9 assists and their last outing.

Pro-Am Day 3 PREVIEW
Tumblr media
At 1:20pm at Ryerson University, Kerr Hall Gymnasium, Day 3 of the Megacity Power Pro-Am continues. To begin Day 3, we have Team Green (2-0) taking on Team Yellow (0-2). This past Tuesday, Team Green hung on to win by 1 point over Team Black while Team Yellow took a blowout loss to Team Orange. Team Green will be confident going into this game, sitting atop of the standings with a 2-0 record. McDonald and Duncan have been a very consistent 1-2 punch two games in and they continue to get good support from their teammates.  For Team Yellow, the first two games have not gone well and that has a lot to do with attendance. Papa Oppong is expected to be in the line-up and that will give them a much needed boost on the offensive end.
At 2:40pm Team Blue (1-1) will battle Team Black (1-1). Both teams took tough losses on Tuesday with Team Black losing by 1 point to Team Green and Team Blue losing a winnable game to Team Red. For Team Blue, the shots simply weren’t falling for them with many players struggling from the field. Courtney Small and Branko Veljovic combined for 59% of the team’s total points. They’ll need to get an offensive boost outside of these two to beat Team Black. For Team Black, there were a lot of positives to build off from the tough loss on Tuesday. They had plenty of opportunities to win the game and must find a way to execute down the stretch moving forward. Stefan Haynes has been fantastic, nearly picking up the Pro-Am’s first triple double with 11-11-8. It will be an interesting match-up with Virijevic-Haynes/Campbell this Sunday.
To wrap up Day 3, we’ve got Team Orange (1-1) squaring off against Team Red (1-1) at 4:00pm. Both teams will go into this game feeling good after big wins this past Tuesday. Team Orange scored a league high 96 points in a blowout win over Team Yellow.  Team Red grinded out a win over Team Blue thanks to a balanced effort on both ends of the court in the 2nd half. For Team Orange, can the hot offense continue? 7/8 players scored 9 or more points and they shot 10/21 (47.6%) from 3 point range. Although most of these players were strangers before this game, they really played like a unit in the victory. Equally impressive was the performance that Team Red put on. It didn’t look good for Red early on, but they really turned it on in the 2nd half scoring 44 points compared to 29 in the 1st half.  They were also without their starting centre, Shawn Conley, who is expected to return this Sunday.
Important: The Toronto Pride Parade will be taking place just outside Ryerson University so please give yourself extra time when commuting to the game this Sunday. Several roads will be closed and finding parking could be a difficult task.

Pro-Am League PREVIEW
Tumblr media
(NBL Pros Courtney Small (left) and Mark Gomillia (right) will go head to head in Tuesday's 9:50pm match-up.)
At 7:10pm at Ryerson University, Kerr Hall Gymnasium, we've got Team Black (1-0) vs. Team Green (1-0). This past Sunday, Black picked up an easy W over a shorthanded Yellow squad while Green edged Red in an entertaining game to wrap up opening day.
For Black, it's all about attendance. They got lucky playing a team with only 5 in their opener and need to be at full strength to beat a squad like Green. They pretty much did whatever they wanted on offense especially in the 2nd half of their game.  For Green, expect Black to be near or at full strength. Unlike team Red – a guard heavy team, Black does have decent depth at the 4-5 position. Big men Stefan Haynes, Paul Campbell in the mix with Iffy Ehirim and Roderick Ramsay will be interesting to watch and could determine the result of the game.
At 8:30pm, we’ve got two teams looking to climb back to .500 with Team Yellow (0-1) taking on Team Orange (0-1). In the Pro-Am opener, Orange kept things close with Team Blue but were unable to get over the hump, losing 81-70. For Team Yellow, it was not the way they wanted to start their season, losing in a blowout to Black.
For both teams, it is expected that most players will be in the line-up. This is definitely encouraging considering they were both shorthanded on Sunday. Orange did play well despite playing without a true power forward and centre. Shamus Ferguson is expected to play and will give them a big boost in the paint. For Yellow, they need to forget about the season opener. They should have most of their players in the line-up with Arun Kumar and Michael Smith confirmed to play. Although Yellow lost, Nem Stankovic and Craig Hanson put up some serious numbers in the loss.
To wrap up the night, we’ve got Team Blue vs. Team Red at 9:50pm. Blue kicked off their season with a W over Orange and team Red took a tough loss to Green. Blue’s Double V, Veljovic and Virijevic combined for 41 points and we’ll see if that can continue on this Tuesday.
For Red, there are a lot of positives to build off on the loss to Green. Despite being undersized, they played solid on both ends of the court. Even though this was their first game as a team, they looked comfortable playing with one another. For Blue, they got production from a lot of players and that’s how they won the game. Very impressive considering it was their first time playing together.
