so i feel sort of stupid for only realizing this now, after marinating in a western fandom for several months, but it seems really obvious in hindsight that the reavers are meant to be the space equivalent of native americans, which is... so breath-takingly joss whedon (i do not mean this in a complimentary way)

but the more important question is what the fuck does that mean for red harvest in a firefly au? there is also that weird split in reaver mythology between firefly and serenity. i doooon’t think red harvest makes much sense with the serenity explanation, but i don’t really know that the firefly explanation jives any better.

(also the interesting question of what goody and sam’s relationship would look like: seems easy at first to slot goody as alliance and sam as a browncoat, but goody’s on the winning side, now. he’s a legitimate war hero.)

you’re dead on about the dialogue

it’s like pizzolatto decided to set that one pretentious kid that sprinkles in french into casual conversation, because sometimes you can’t “fully express” yourself in one language, into a western. that kid who drops snatches of poetry into conversation and who is still inexplicably popular despite being that kind of nerd, because he’s good-looking and athletic and his parents are rich. and honestly it makes the other kids feel a little cool when they catch a stray reference and know what it means, and they’ll laugh a little, proud of themselves, and tell each other they’re better than that one kid who doesn’t get it.

the other kids say it’s because he’s asian, because he doesn’t understand what they’re saying at all, but goody sees him following the teachers well enough in class and stays behind one day after the bell rings to ask.

“most of the time i ignore you,” billy says. “i don’t care enough.”

and, being a contrary asshole, that’s how goody falls in love for the first time.

Favorite Character: billy, by an enormous margin, but i imagine that’s incredibly obvious? second favorite is red harvest. then it drops off again for quite a bit. (vasquez would be higher up if it wasn’t for his introduction scene, which runs so weirdly counter to his characterization in the rest of the movie)

Least Favorite Character: faraday. a lot of his movie dialogue is really weirdly written, in a way that reads as pretty modern and ahistorical to me. also the racism thing is fun.

Favorite Scene: billy’s introduction. i love how extra the choice to go for the hairpin was, thanks lbh.

Scene That Made You Cry: i don’t really cry during movies, but i think a weird amount about how goody fell off the bell tower and billy died looking at goody’s flask and not his face, and that makes me sad on the inside.

or honestly that one shot of billy with his back to the windows, just slinging back shots after spending the whole movie up until that point declining alcohol. aw, billy.

Scene That Made You Laugh: horne’s introduction, i guess? although it’s mixed in with a lot of weird sad notes, “that’s another story,” what. there’s... a lot of uneven tone in this movie.

Favorite Line: a lot of the dialogue is overwrought. i 100% think this is nic pizzolatto’s fault (”time is a flat circle,” “fame is a sarcophagus,” whatever). but i really liked the bit in the bell tower where goody’s trying to recount something his daddy used to say to billy, but gets distracted midway through and forgets--it felt a lot more natural.

Favorite Kill/Death: horne just straight up tackling a dude off his horse. what in hell.

Favorite Villain: that guy who gives faraday a light at the end--what a decent last move. really didn’t work out well for you, though.

Favorite Song: i very rarely pay attention to soundtracks. it’s awful. i’m awful.
