Organic Agriculture and Its Importance in India
Tumblr media
The Era of Organic Agriculture in India
Agriculture becomes a part of human occupancy since the earliest days of human civilizations. When that first person chose to plant seeds, it was the first time someone figured out that seeds could be harvested and then produced for food, and the foundation of agriculture, as well as the first producer (can say, farmer) was born.
Importance and Benefits of Organic Agriculture
As in India, like about 50% of people employed in agriculture of the Indian work-force and contributed 17-18% to Country's GDP in 2018. There are many benefits and importance of agriculture in India, we'll talk about some of the main benefits here.
1. The Basics are Still the Same
2. Modernized Farming
3. The New Age of Organics
4. Leaps and Bounds
5. History Doesn’t Lie
6. Higher Cost
7. Modern Technology
1. The Basics are Still the Same
From ages to our modern time, the basics of agriculture endured the same as before. You harvest and cultivate the same process before as of now plant the seeds, water and fertilize, weed and then harvest. Now we depend on farmers to grow food for us, rather than growing it ourselves. In India, farmers are the backbone of the food industry. Without them, our food industry would be limited in both quantity and variety. And as we well know, if you count any business that is sure to stand the test of time, it is only agriculture and farming.
2. Modernized Farming
The agriculture industry in India thundered in the 20th century, and with it came the realization that if there could be more yield of every plant, a grower could work the same hours but potentially they can double their business and profit.
Chemical organizations expedited artificial fertilizers, soil conditioners, weed and insect killers that would provide supplements to a plant to grow faster, produce more fruits, need less water and be easier to care for. Though this enabled farmers to feed more people, while making more profit, the chemicals began to compromise the soil quality. What’s worse, studies began to appear indicating that all of these additives were harming wildlife health and groundwater, with questions popping up about human health. Were these chemicals hitting us too?
3. The New Age of Organics
To provide better foods and get back to the ways of our ancestors, organic farming started to come back into fashion. By reducing chemical use the fruit and vegetables became the healthiest and best-tasting food you could get. Co-ops and health food stores began to spring up as organic food started to grow in popularity, and today, complete supermarket chains are devoted to organic crops. Whereas 10 to 15 years ago it would be difficult or impossible to find an organic section in your favorite food store, now, practically every food store has at least one aisle filled with organic food materials.
4. Leaps and Bounds
The organic food segment is increasing rapidly, and in some areas, the demand is greater than supply. Recent studies proved that organic foods are better to eat than food is grown from plants that have been chemically aided. As word got out that organic food was readily available, parents with kids flocked to these stores and are now driving this market higher than ever before you can think. The truth is that, if there ever was an agriculture segment to be involved should be organic farming at the top of the list.
5. History Doesn’t Lie
In ancient history, all of the farming food that humans consumed was 100% pure organic. It had to be, as the fertilizers were made from animal and fish products rather than chemicals, while insect and weed control was done by hand with organic weed and insect-killing substances.
Up until the 20th century, practically everything that humans consumed was 100% organic. All of the meats that we know, from beef, pork, and chicken, were raised on plant feed from entirely natural farm fields, and all seafood was caught from the oceans or lakes.
Crops were planted and cultivated with horse-powered equipment, and even the plants that were picked and rejected were used as compost and fertilizer for the next batch of plantings. Nothing left to waste and it was sustainable agriculture at its best.
6. Higher Cost
One of the most important issues with organic food production has been a high labor cost. Since everything has usually been prepared by hand, or with horse-drawn tools, natural fruits and vegetables usually cost more at the food stores than similarly grown commercially produced goods.
Granted, there is no doubt that organics are better and more nutritious, but when it comes to extending out the food bill every month, it’s hard to beat the cheaper prices of commercial agriculture.
7. Modern Technology
Higher labor hours have been always one of the biggest drawbacks of organic food production. There is too much difference between home production and commercial production i.e. it is one thing to develop an organic garden and stocks enough food for a small family, but it is a completely different thing to produce enough food to make it a business. A small garden may need a few hours per week for weeding, feeding, composting and fertilizing, but when it comes on a commercial scale, like about for several hundred acres, the labor cost alone becomes the only biggest factor.
However, with the latest ideas in agricultural tools, organic farming is immediately becoming as cost-effective as commercial farming. This modern technology is cutting off hundreds of hours of labor, which eventually means more organic crops growing to market in less time than ever before. Without modern tools, organic farming cannot compete.
As this agriculture trend continues, consumers may soon have a variety of purchasing organic food at approximately the same price as commercially produced food, while stores will be able to devote more space to organics. This scenario, for the farmer and consumer, is gradually coming straight as more and more modern technology takes the place of hands in the fields.
In essence, we have reached full circle and are, once again, embracing the organic lifestyle of food-producing and eating. With modern agricultural machinery, the farmer can be profitable, less time-consuming in planting and harvesting, while offering a safe income for them. It is once again the age of organic agriculture, and that’s a win-win situation for all.

India’s Biggest Challenge: Saving The Future Of Farming & Agriculture
Tumblr media
India is an agricultural country. Agriculture is “only” approx 16 % of GDP but the biggest sector for employment. Officially farmers are only a few 100 million, but after adding family members who help or hardly farm, as also wage laborers, the number of farm workers is likely to be closer to half a billion people.
But how many people would India require farming if it were as labor effective as the US for growing crops?
Today’s agriculture policies fail to recognize how crop choices, input costs, and the supply chain are intertwined, perpetuating marginal farming.
The US is fantastic; with less than 2% of its population growing food sufficient for almost 2 billion people, but much of it they fed to animals.
The US also concentrates on many crops suitable for mechanization, but even using metrics from many East Asian countries, with about 10% of the population in agriculture - as opposed to half the workforce for India - that is hundreds of millions of people who could turn to alternative possibilities.
Existing Solutions are Outdated or Useless
Indian assistance for agriculture has had multiple drivers, some noble, some less so. Support has extended from administered prices (both to farmers and end-users through ration shops) to subsidized or even free inputs such as power, water, and fertilizer.
At some point, we need political directions to question current support mechanisms to check their equity, efficiency, and macroeconomic impact.
But sometimes current policies are the wrong remedies for the problems and we blame execution failures as the problems that may be a problem of diagnosis.
Beyond liberalization of pricing and supply-chain restrictions mentioned previously, a few suggestions include:
1. Improve Productivity and Efficiency
This generalism involves providing technology to reduce costs and increase yields. More than distortions via pricing flags, crop choices or even utilization of inputs like fertilizer and water are separated from proper science which should guide best practices based on fundamentals such as soil, climate, water availability, etc. While drones, satellite imagery, soil sensors and IoT (Internet of Things) seize a lot of attention, we still have a ways to go before “low-tech” solutions like drip irrigation become mainstream.
2. Think System Level and Price Inputs Correctly
One way to improve system-level efficiency is to price inputs like water and fertilizer properly. Thanks to subsidies, our fertilizer mix is distorted towards the overuse of urea. Today’s system of cheap inputs also means farmers have no reason to save electricity by installing an efficient pump-set. Paying for water isn’t just about limited choices in pumping; it would fundamentally transform the choices of crops. If we worry about water today, the condition will only worsen as climate change progresses.
3. Focus on Quality or Value, Instead of Quantity
We want food to be cheaper but why should those same inputs benefits apply to growers of flowers or cash crops, who also happen to be relatively richer (larger farm size) growers? Perhaps policies need to differentiate between food staples and cash crops.
4. Go Organic
While some people may challenge organic being healthier versus not, let’s just leave it where the science is not conclusive. Organic is not a trend – when we were a child, all food was organic. So if we going to start Organic farming then we need organic hybrid seeds.
Organic is important for India for several reasons.
We spend lots of taxpayer money on inputs, especially fertilizer.
Organic production relies more on labor as a substitute for other inputs, something suitable for employment.
Organic farming might cost a little more, but several more serious challenges deserve policy attention. There is an idle period were traditionally farmed soil is left to recover, and even the initial yields are low.
Farmers need a lot of education and hand-holding in this process.
There are issues of trust – Indians are famous for bending the rules.
Planting organic as a true offering needs innovative thinking beyond just labeling and certifications.
Summary
India has enough food; does it have too many people working in agriculture? The pressures on land are an outcome of the strategy, which convicts most people to marginal farming. India needs a various set of solutions for agriculture and farming as we already described in this post.

Hybrid Seeds as the eventual fate of Agriculture | Shine Brand Seeds
The rise in population and with it the ever increasing demand for food, has created the need for better productivity. If the demand and supply balance is to be maintained, better means of production should be made available to the agriculture industry. This increasing demand for food and better means of production, lead to the introduction of Hybrid Seeds (cross-pollinated seeds).
Tumblr media
Hybrid seeds are a result of special "breeding" techniques. In other words, these seeds have been deliberately crossed with 2 different parent varieties.  The advantages of using hybrid seeds, even though they generally cost more than non-hybrid seeds, is that the resulting plant and fruit is often stronger and more resistant to disease. The fruit of the plant tends to be more uniform in shape, ripen at the same time, has better keeping qualities, and sometimes can be harvested early.  The disadvantages of using hybrid seeds is that you cannot save the seed from that plant for your next year’s garden.  The seeds are totally worthless for replanting.  This results in the gardener having to purchase new seeds each year.  This is the main reason companies like Monsanto want heirloom/organic type farming done away with.  These companies want you to rely on them for your food and seeds!  If you don't believe this, there is legislation going on right now trying to regulate organic farming, etc.  I invite you to visit the links below where I have posted the aforementioned bill!
This impending situation of world hunger is bringing hybrid seeds to the forefront of mass production again. Industry analysis experts believe that if agriculture is to keep providing food for all the people in the world, then agriculture should be looked upon as manufacturing industry, and should be treated like that as well.
