Part of the reason that The Rake is such a terrifying villain in The Hazards of Love is because in a world where people can shapeshift into deer and rivers are sentient, you would think one of the main antagonists would be an evil wizard who wants to take over the world or something.

But he's not.

He's just a human man. A human man who murders and abuses. In the real world, you'll never have to be afraid of deals with sentient rivers going wrong, but you will have to fear men like him at one point in your life, perhaps you already have, even if it was just something you saw on the news and nothing that affected you personally.
