Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting (roza), prayer (salah), reflection, and community.A commemoration of Muhammad's first revelation, the annual observance of Ramadan is regarded as one of the Five Pillars of Islam and lasts twenty-nine to thirty days, from one sighting of the crescent moon to the next.But what exactly makes Ramadan so sacred? 1. The Revelation of the Quran:
Ramadan is the month when the Quran, the Holy book of Islam, was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) by Allah (SWT). This momentous event marks the beginning of Ramadan's spiritual significance. The Quran's revelation during this month serves as a reminder of divine guidance and wisdom bestowed upon humanity.
2. Fasting and Spiritual Reflection:
Fasting from dawn to sunset is obligatory (fard) for all adult Muslims who are not chronically ill, travelling, elderly, breastfeeding, diabetic, pregnant, or menstruating. The predawn meal is referred to as suhur, and the nightly feast that breaks the fast is called iftar.
The spiritual rewards (sawab) of fasting are believed to be multiplied 70times during Ramadan and the devils are chained. Accordingly, during the hours of fasting, Muslims refrain not only from food and drink, but also tobacco products, sexual relations, and sinful behavior, devoting themselves instead to prayer and study of the Quran.
3. Seeking Spiritual Renewal:
Ramadan offers a chance for spiritual renewal and personal growth. Beyond the physical act of fasting, Muslims strive to engage in acts of kindness, charity and self-improvement throughout the month. It's a time to purify the soul, cultivate gratitude and strive for righteousness through increased worship, Quranic recitation and charitable deeds.
4. The Night of Power (Laylat al-Qadr):
In the last ten nights of Ramadan where lies a night of exceptional significance known as Laylat al-Qadr.It is the night when the Quran was first revealed and it's a night of forgiveness. People seek forgiveness from Allah (SWT),offers more prayer and asks guidance and blessing.
