Okay but these fucking dudes are trying hard to reach an audience and I respect the fuck out of them for it. 12/10 sanitation department of New York City.
nothing frustrates me more than when adults refuse to even slightly indulge the questions and thoughts of children. i remember one time when one of my younger cousins accidentally stumbled across the concept of purchasing power parity because she realised 10 rupees which bought her 10 candies in India only bought her ~3 candies when we went on holiday to Japan, and when she asked her mother about “why the same things cost different amounts in different places” my aunt had the audacity to call her spoiled for not understanding the “”worth” of money, that’s not what she was ASKING damn it!! your daughter just set up her own big mac index and realised a key metric of macroeconomics!!! how do you not find that utterly fascinating !! why don’t adults talk to children !!
Watched 'Question Time' a couple of days ago and I cannot get one particular audience member's questions out of my head...
Understandably, the discussion was about the invasion of Ukraine. This man - visibly moved by the plight of Ukrainians forced to flee their homes - asked if it wasn't 'dehumanising' to refer to them as 'refugees' (after all, they were just like him with families, communities, jobs, hopes etc).
To give him the benefit of the doubt, he was reflecting on how reductive it can be to just see a person (or group of people) as one thing, rather than as a whole, with complex lives etc
But, on the other hand, I know how much media in the UK (esp the daily fail, express, & telegraph) has reported on numerous refugee crises over the years. I know how the UK often views immigrants and their descendants.
The dehumanisation is palpable. It's why attempts to show the 'humanity' of refugees are often tactless and exploitative. It's why so many people apparently think it reasonable to question how desperate people are if they've got mobile phones/travelled with young children/paid off people smugglers. Refugees become 'non-people', rather than people seeking refuge
And then when someone says something like 'they're people, not just refugees', it's seen as completely wholesome
But if that's not an indictment of the sheer volume of anti refugee/asylum/migrant language we've been subjected to over decades of xenophobic and racist media bs, I don't know what is.
[ID: A gifset containing four gifs about the game Sunset.
Gif 1 shows the player character, Angela Burnes, looking out a window and covering her mouth as she sees a massive fire in the city outside.
Gif 2 shows chores Angela needs to carry out from her first person perspective: “Use the plunger to unclog sink with care” and “Empty trash.”
Gif 3 shows Angela’s thoughts, “what? oh. the phone is ringing! should I pick it up? who can it be?” as she walks into the dining area.
Gif 4 shows the player being presented with two options while in the guest dressing room: “Hang romantic poster on wall” or “Hang revolutionary banner on wall.”
