My Little Existence: Friendship Is Magic. But no really, don't *ever* underestimate the power of friendship and being with like-minded people, physically sitting in your room with them as you talk about your inner worlds, art/writing, and life experiences. Friendship Is Magic.

This so much. I make original worlds and characters but I'm also an extremely active fan artist. I tend to gravitate towards "scary" characters for deeply personal reasons and there's nothing wrong with that; it's not real. They're not real. Places like Ao3 and Tumblr really allow me to engage with the "weirder" fan culture because I see *people like me*.

An addition to the issue of consumerism is creatives attempting to battle each other; I genuinely can not stand when people have a chip on their shoulder and try to ruin fan culture because they had a bad experience with someone or are mad their OCs aren't popular. (It's absolutely okay to want your hard work to be seen but it will *NEVER* be acceptable to hurt other people because you're upset over fan art. Those kinds of people usually unironcially beg for fan art/fan fiction of their OCs too without realizing the bizarre nature of foaming at the mouth over fan artists then crying for their attention. It's immature and annoying. That attitude is not wanted nor needed. We should be lifting our fellow creatives up.)

And don't even get me started on those corporations! I do not want ads all up in my face or corporate sponsors when I'm looking for fan fiction of Davy Jones or Pennywise. I don't want your diet pills and I don't care about clickbait articles where I JUST WON'T BELIEVE WHAT HAPPENS NEXT WOWEE. 💥

Fanfic is a free hobby.

It's one of the last few things we can have as a society that's free. You can engage, for free. People give you things (art, stories, etc), for free.

Don't buy into the consummerism just because it's everywhere else.

You don't have to consume everything you interact with. You don't have to use things, just because they exist.

You're allowed (still, for now), to have things that are enjoyable for free.

Do you realise how insane the world is? We don't have many places where we can just be, for free anymore, but ao3 is. Did you notice we don't have ads in ao3? We don't have pop ups? Where ELSE do we not have that?

Where else can you just go and not have to wait for a commercial to be over or for ads to be on the sidelines?

I don't think the younger people understand, but the whole of internet used to be like this. YouTubers would do Youtube for free, just because. You couldn't monetise your internet presence before.

Ao3 is like a little preserved corner of the internet where the old internet used to be, and it's being attacked by people who do not understand that free things are allowed to exist without judgment.

Please don't ruin this for us.

Some of us need it.
