I’m seeing a lot of trepidation over the rated “R” version of Batman vs. Superman, and while I’m not trying to speak over anyone’s concerns (everyone is entitled to their own opinion!) I do want to point out that based on what we’ve seen in past trailers BVS will alude to one of the most tragic and shocking incidents in Batman history: Jason Todd’s murder.

There’s really no way to get around the brutality of Jason’s murder, at least not without diminishing the agony he endured while being beaten by Joker:

Or how deeply his death devastated Bruce, who cradled Jason’s body after finding that he’d been to late to save him, and how he continued to blame himself for what he viewed as his “greatest failure”:

The murder’s later depiction in the animated film Batman: Under the Red Hood also didn’t shy away from illustrating its violence. We see the silhouette of Joker attacking Jason, making jokes as he beats him with a crowbar, and scenes of Jason lying bloodied on the floor:

Now obviously I have no way of knowing whether or not Jason’s murder will actually be seen in BVS or simply just mentioned, so this post isn’t to say that his attack is the definite reason for the “R” rating. I only wanted to suggest the possibility that the rating may not be due to Zack Snyder trying to create an edgelord version of Dawn of Justice, but rather out of a desire to do justice to an iconic scene.
