Cryptozoology is my favourite kind of fake science stuff. Wish there was also cryptobotany, like mothman but its just a really big fern in the middle of a field with literally nothing else around it , that spawned in the dead of night, might have killed a few people and never shows up in photos, and no one is sure its even real
#there was a cryptobotany trend a while back on instagram reels#about what to do if you see a long extinct species of devonian era tree#the kind that’s perfectly symmetrical and looks like a sea creature?#there was a lot of fun horror about that#cryptogeology to me would be either be false mineralogy of like unconfirmed-to-exist minerals#or the lamer answer of people believing in a hollow earth#or maybe like conspiracies about unidentified fault systems#maybe people inventing gravitational anomalies abt the crust’s thickness#u can get cryptogeological about the ocean floor too#despite the fact that i think the ocean floor’s geologic features might be#some of the most extensively mapped geology on earth#people r like ‘we haven’t explored 90 percent of the earths oceans we don’t know what’s on the sea floor’#yeah no actually the 10% we have explored is the sea floor. we know a lot about the oceanic crust#not as much as we could but like. much more than you think#there’s no hidden continents down there is all im saying#i think my ideal form of cryptogeology would be like#random giant glacial erratic boulder in a place that has otherwise no signs of glaciation#like that’s spooky#and granular enough that it’s difficult to explain away#unlike shit like ‘woaoaoaoh the bottom of the ocean might have crazy shit on it’ where it’s like dude we have so many maps of the sea floor

while i'm on the subject of making bad takes about geology in pop culture, im. so tired of the first response everyone has when they hear i studying geology being:
"haha so do you eat rocks? which rocks do geologists eat?"
... it's salt, man. you already know the answer to this. theres one answer and its salt. and you eat it every day and its normal.
its the most boring question to answer. geologists eat rocks because everyone eats rocks. because salt is a rock. it's the "so it's free, right?" when the barcode doesn't scan at the cash register of geology questions.
sure, if you want to get a little frisky with it, you can throw in how kaolin is used as a texture enhancer in ice cream and how the titanium dioxide that makes oreo cream so white derives from rutile, but the answer they're actually looking for is salt. and at that point whoever has asked you that has already stopped giving a shit, because the mental image they had of geologists shoving glittering green crystals into their mouths has already vaporized and they've realized just how boring the question they just asked really is.
you could have asked me about volcanoes or the bottom of the ocean and instead you asked me a question with the boringest answer imaginable. you learned one fact about me, which is that i study the processes that make lava explode and crystals grow, and you looked me, a human being, dead in the eyes, and asked me if i eat salt. and were disappointed when the answer was just yeah. you know what? how about next time, instead, lets both sit down in an empty room and stare at the wall together in silence until we wither away into skeletons. would that be more interesting to you?
