frankenstein.
@memcirs liked for a 19th century starter!
“It seems we both want for patients, Dr. Van Helsing,” Victor said, entering the other doctor’s practice, hands buried deep in his jacket pockets to protect them from the bitter cold.
Her practice, like his, was devoid of patients - healthy or sick. Many saw a female doctor and refused treatment, for deep patrician pride. Many others heard the name “Frankenstein” and refused treatment, for reasons Victor did not fully comprehend, since he was the only doctor he could think of who had a track record that included raising the dead.
(Not that people knew the details. In fact, most people thought it was urban legend. Victor did little to dispute that, but would still quietly, from time to time, reanimate a stillborn child for a desperate mother.)
“We could go into business together,” he said. It was not an idle suggestion, but it was not one he expected her to take him seriously on. “It would at least create the illusion of having more patients.”
He’d returned from his father’s funeral two weeks ago a wealthy man. A baron in name, but his name remained mud within London circles. Often, Igor offered him a partnership in his London practice, working to serve the poor and infirm. It was tempting to be near Igor - even if it meant being near Igor’s wife and child as well - but the English countryside gave him space and privacy to continue his research on reanimation. He wondered what draw this sleepy little town had for Dr. Eleanor Van Helsing, who’d come from distant shores and of reputable medical stock. Victor leaned upon the door frame and smiled at her. He liked her twice as well as he liked the old doctor who most of the villagers saw for their non-emergency needs, what with his snake oil cures and cataract-ish eyes… Sooner or later - probably later, just to spite Victor and Dr. Van Helsing - the man would die and the patients would have to choose between a lady doctor, whom they did not respect or a mad doctor, whom they did not trust.
In that, they were kindred spirits.
( the name of frankenstein was common long before the man himself arrived in the village. true, FANTASTICAL rumors were all the doctor heard from what little patients passed into her office, but nonetheless eleanor knew the ghastly reputation behind the name. therefore she was only mildly surprised to discover he had arrived at the little hamlet &. wished to speak with her. he had entered the homely brick building so alike the others save for the plaque beside the door identifying her HOMESTEAD, guided into spacious study where books &. papers haphazardly claimed whatever space she did not need. at the oaken desk the good doctor herself sat, an ENIGMA all on her own. for while victor frankenstein’s reputation, while surely wildly EXAGGERATED, was universal knowledge, dr. van helsing’s name was shrouded in mystery. )
( it was known her father was a respected doctor &. scholar, one of the most BRILLIANT minds of the time. his daughter following in his footsteps caused mild controversy though she proved to be just as ADEPT in medicine if not more so. frequent visits &. eventual emigration to england was not questioned, but her refusal to accept positions at hospitals in favor of a MODEST practice was. in part what jobs were offered to her were either insulting for her extensive knowledge or simply too POPULATED for her tastes. eleanor had always preferred smaller offices with more personal environments, though her move to this town was not solely driven by employment convenience. )
( she was not spoken of often - despite the oddity of a WOMAN physician, the novelty wore away when there was no other concrete strife attached. withdrawn model citizens were usually not GOSSIPED about; yet if asked, whispers of midnight strolls at hours INNAPROPRIATE for a respectable lady will be mentioned. candles always lit in her study &. her particular interest in strange forensic cases would indicate a woman who perhaps worked too often but nothing more. they would not know of CHILDHOOD shadows, obsessions with the undead, the creation of a compendium sure to shatter the foundations of the world. as far as the villagers were concerned she was the product of a coming age, shut away in her uniform brick home, SECRECY her shield. she needed to be HIDDEN to continue her dangerous work, after all, or she would have been dead long ago. the sleepy town, RIFE with vampiric activity from nearby estates, was an ideal location for her studies. )
( it is clear the woman before him is not usual - letting him meet her instead of outright SCORNING him as many had already done was a testament to that. royal blue hues scrutinize him from beneath shining lenses with a patience, a TOLERANCE perhaps not witness in some time. his words cut but she knows they ring with naked TRUTH. patients were few &. far between, country aristocrats too proud to accept her advice &. townspeople prejudiced with ARCHAIC standards. though joining frankenstein would not help her gain clientele, her concerns lie in his state of mind. perhaps, if the rumors were true, he was more than open-minded in the medical field, but she did not want to be an ASSISTANT. patriarchal principles had not affected her here in this hamlet because she was alone, hence she was not bothered until moments like these. she only wished for a partnership in which she had as much INDEPENDENCE as she did now, not hidden behind the trusted male façade. working with frankenstein could prove to be INTERESTING, even beneficial to her nocturnal pursuits, but her conditions remained. )
( tall figure rises with the rustle of skirts, SMARTLY dressed in modest earth shades. gentle smile curls rosy lips but dark blue hues reveal none of her thoughts. when she speaks accented lilt reveals western european origins, though not as heavy as her father’s rougher speech. )
‘ if you truly wish to work together, i would only ask for a true partnership - equals in every way. i am not an assistant, nor am i a nurse, &. i would despise being treated as such. otherwise, i can hardly object to such a proposal, doctor. ‘

( a flash of anger in deep blue depths - familiar, perhaps, to the BEAST before her. faintest glimpse of a temper easily ignited carefully concealed beneath composed façade. a proud girl, posture straightens as IRRITATION passes as quickly as it came. she who sought truth &. spoke it to all, flinches at such an accusation. measured tones address the faux gentleman with an equally STRAINED gaze. )

@memcirs || Greetings …
She sat, eyes unfixed as she wiped at her blood stained lips. She’d known better than to do this - - - but her damned thirst had over powered her, made her it’s slave in the moment! Now, reclining against the large stone marker, she had been convinced she was completely concealed in her folly.
She sighed.
Of course not - - -
This was what carelessness got you, you fool !!!
She stood only as quickly as she dared, hands still concealing her mouth as she hoisted herself up with the stone’s help, her voice pitiful as she spoke:
“ Hello? Can - Can you help me? I’ve been battered by petty thieves and left for dead! “
( final journey home had been uneventful. clouds made the night a inky, PALPABLE black, difficult to see anything beneath the muffled luster of the moon. young physician keeps her head down, features shaded under the brim of her hat. it was much to LATE to be out for her tastes &. she had work to be done at her office, avoiding contact with the few she passed just to get home quickly. nights as dark as these were always ones she was wary of, this heavy darkness that SETTLED about her as heavy as a fog &. twice as ominous. )
( then suddenly clouds part, just as a convincing cry for help rings in the air. midnight hues glance up to catch the pale figure rising from the ground, illuminated by a perfect ray of UNVEILED moonlight. no matter her rush this woman was PERSUASIVE with her acting. slender figure briskly rushes to her side, gaze fraught with professional concern. )
‘ madam, i am a doctor. are you hurt? ‘
( melodious response rings into the empty night. for now they are the only two figures on the road. worn leather satchel is rested atop WORN stone marker as delicate features crease with instant worry. ever a GIVER, eleanor van helsing scrutinizes the woman quickly for any obvious injuries., eyes narrowed below the shade of her hat. )

❝ Don’t you see? It is a new age. It requires a new evil. And I am that new evil.❞ 𝓛 𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒕 paused, watching the other. ❝ I am the vampire for these times.❞
( repulsion creases delicate features. petite boots take a step backward, cold shiver running the length of her spine. NOCTURNAL scholar has at last encountered one of the white demons she has sought for so many years, &. it is nothing like she expected. in fact, it is WORSE. beneath keen royal blue glare it is evident he is not human, stunningly beautiful to the eye to an almost DISTURBING degree. nails dig into soft palms as fists clench, hard line of her jaw setting in a firm line. accent is harsh, CUTTING with growled words. )
‘ i am appalled - nay, disgusted - that you can be so proud being a monster. ‘

@quakers-gonna-quake | x.
It seemed incredibly hard to focus on just this one SPECTRUM standing before him. The noise level within was only grow as the men in red sunk their minds DEEPER into the several glasses of ale they had already consumed. Her accent was definitely European, feeling a sense of HESITANC creep up his spine. Sure, she was probably HARMLESS, but even a lamb can become a lion.
The Quaker only nodded his head as a response, forcing a small yet AWKWARD smile. Brown hues remained to study her as he opened up the log book, examining the names listed within his establishment. Before he had an opportunity to tell this woman that he was in fact fully booked, the annoying sound of SHOUTING rang over the drunken laughters.
Two inexperienced men in CRIMSON had started a brawl from the far corner of his front seating area, immediately dropping the quill upon the ink ridden paper of his guest book. Roberts father had now approached from behind, an old face etched with complete BEWILDERMENT. "Is this-... is this a common occurrence Robert?"
The Quaker didn't respond with SPEECH, but with a glance over his shoulder. "Robert, if this-..." Samuel begun, although his son had already fled from behind the counter. At this point in time, the laughter had turned into that of cheering although soon became silent as he shoved his way through the crowd. They all stunk of ale and sweat, spots of vomit littering the wooden flooring which he currently ignored.
One man was pinned upon the surface of the table, the other CLUTCHING him by the throat as he repeatedly swung punches. They were young, IGNORANT boys who had allowed their anger to get the best of them. Robert approached from behind, grabbing the attacker by the arm just as if lifted into the air to toss another blow. He yanked the boy away by his arm, TWISTING it up behind his back as he slammed him face first onto the surface of another table. Managing to keep the younger male pinned, he wretched his arm up painful only to see the solider grimace and yell in protest.
"You listen closely you pathetic rat and you listen well. When I release you, you are going to empty your room and leave. If you happen to have the courage to return to my establishment, I assure you will not be leaving the second time around. Is that understood?" His voice was surprisingly calm despite the situation at hand, giving another push onto his arm as he failed to respond. "Yes! Yes, I understand!" The boy replied in agony, suddenly releasing his arm only to pull him up and SHOVE him away.
At this point, the British bystanders had become quiet as their eyes remained large in shock. The last thing anyone expected was a Quaker to make such CRUEL advancements, including himself. His attention was brought back to the solider who had been punched repeatedly, his face bloodied and bruised. "You, come. We need to get you cleaned up." Robert commented as he watched the other boy walk up the stairs towards his room to collect his things.
Finally, the crowd had begun to disperse and drink once more, clearly disappointed the scene had ended so soon. He made his way back up to the counter, his father having remained where he was with a look of shock and disapproval. "Robert..." - "Do me a favour and clean him up. I have other things to deal with." He motioned his head towards the other man in red, his father shooting him a look of disapproval as he led the beaten up bloak into the confines of the kitchen.
"Lucky for you, it seems a room has just opened up."
( his unease is palpable in the increasingly RAUCOUS space between them. this distant attitude was precisely what she had been afraid of - the scathing prejudice felt on both sides of this war was unavoidable unlike what she had hoped. despite sympathizing with men &. women such as the innkeeper in front of her voicing such opinions was exactly what she wanted to AVOID lest she be prosecuted for treason, never to see her family again. the only thing she could do now was ignore his hesitance with a PLEASANT smile of her own &. hope, if her residence was to be under this roof, there would be no problems. as his cautious sable hues remain trained on her she attempts to look as INNOCUOUS as possible; only a young lady a few years younger than him seeking SANCTUARY from the gradual downpour outside, hardly a threat as she studies him just as INTENTLY through clear lenses. )
( what she cannot ignore is the deafening crowd behind her. she cannot help but WINCE just slightly, knowing that none of these BOISTEROUS officers did not help her case. they too represented a dominant european population as she surely did in the innkeeper’s eyes, yet while she was a single polite lady the rowdy soldiers already DESPISED by the population would leave a more lasting impression. midnight gaze drifts from son to father, SHAME sagging slender shoulders beneath the cloak though she does not instigate or interfere in any way. eleanor pities the men who have to clean up after these soldiers who were so blatantly ignorant. she was no saint, but even she knew what RESPECT was worth. )
( as the younger gentleman bursts from behind the counter she moves her things &. her person behind it’s protection, FRIGHTENED at the possibility of an all-out brawl. unfortunately for her she had inherited her father’s intelligence, his thirst for knowledge &. his wisdom but NONE of his physical strength. her mother’s willowy figure would get her killed if the fight spread. an AWKWARD smile is cast to the older gentleman now beside her before training her keen gaze on the assault. grimly she realizes she is not even out on the field yet &. already she has already seen her first glimpse of COMBAT. )
( eleanor may not know the innkeeper - robert, she recalled his name being - as a quaker but shock is still evident by the UNHINDERED gasp. she is not horrified, however - rather only surprised he was BRAZEN enough to harm a british officer. though the circumstances justified his actions, she had no doubt the young soldier would twist the story to make it robert’s fault in order to avoid discipline. in spite of this she admires his BRAVERY to treat the situation as he does, effectively reinstating ORDER to the general chaos. the nurse flinches, hoping the arm is not dislocated or worse. the officer’s PRIDE is the only thing that seems to be maimed at the moment, but she decided she needed to look at it before he left, as well as the other boy’s face which was already as RED as the uniform he wears. )
( gaze shifts from the father &. the wounded boy to the innkeeper. by this point shock has faded, but so had any ANXIETY. eleanor is in her element - finally she begins to feel at ease with a possible patient in the next room, as UNFORTUNATE as it sounds. his proposal is acknowledged with a brief nod of thanks before dulcet tones offer sincere compassion. )
‘ i thank you, sir, &. i don’t mean to intrude, but i have come here as a nurse for his majesty’s army &. i have extensive medical knowledge. if you wouldn’t mind, might i have a look at the two gentlemen before they leave? i am sure you can handle them on your own, sir, but if it’s all the same to you i can examine them if you’d like. ‘
( he might take this as a slight on her part; perhaps a subtle notion of distrust he might not take kindly. but her tone is anything but CONDESCENDING - in fact she only seems genuinely concerned, &. not because they are british. all bags are set down except for one of worn leather at her side. no, she is not attempting to be elitist, she only wants to help HOWEVER she can. )

gentleman.
Reassurance was far from his worried stare of mind, staring out into the crowd of British solider’s which littered the dining area. Even the chime of his bell above the front door failed to draw his attention as it normally did, unaware of his father approaching from the corner of his eye.
“Robert?…” The sound of his name seemed awfully distant, continuing to examine each individual dressed in a red uniform. A firm hand grasped his shoulder, causing the young man to flinch out of his trance as his father gave him a firm shake. “Robert? Are you alright?”
Despite his uncertainties, he forced a smile while nodding his head as a quick reassurance. You arse. Pay attention. “Yes, I’m fine. My apologies. I was… thinking.” The Quaker confirmed, turning around to follow his father further into the kitchen. “Thinking? When are you not thinking Robert?” His father remarked, swallowing back his urge to protest his statement.
“Why are you here?” ___ “We were having dinner tonight I believe.” In all honesty, he had completely forgotten about the former plans made earlier in the week, now nodding his head as if he remembered completely. “Anything you wish for me to make?” Robert asked before he slipped past his fathers side, beginning to clear the counter of used ale mugs. One by one, he began to drop them into a pail full of old water beside him, stopping as he felt a hand rest on his shoulder again.
“I’ll cook. You have a customer.” The older man stated as he limped about the counter in search of a clean pot. Brown hues darted towards the front desk, his gaze falling upon a young blonde woman wearing circular glasses looking rather nervous. She wasn’t from around here. She’s nervous. He glanced back over in his fathers direction only to see him watching from a distance, the slightest smirk playing across his lips. Robert arched a brow in question before approaching the counter, grabbing the quill with dried ink at it’s tip from off of the counter top. “How can I help you?”
( soft rain is shut out as the wooden door clicks in place behind her. yes, she is certainly a STRANGER here, perhaps unwelcome, presence stiff &. foreign. slender fingers reach to pull away the hood of the dark cloak glittering with rain to reveal hastily styled tresses of GOLD. prussian blues narrow in natural scrutiny to study setting first before shifting to the men in CRIMSON. a sigh is swallowed - she might not agree with these men, their OPPRESSION &. unjust points of view, but any of them along with their brothers already in the field were her patients. it would be best to remain objective, she had decided on her voyage to the colonies, as to not cause trouble. her entrance has hardly caused a stir; a snicker here, drunken leering there, MURMURED curiosity before gazes returned to food &. drink. the polite smile that curves rosy lips is as austere as her posture, a MASK of porcelain not yet cracked. )
( hers is a peculiar figure - tall, slim, a scholarly lean unusual for women. her most striking features are the PIERCING eyes beneath clear circular lenses; besides the strangely dark shade of blue, they are intelligent, keen, though not condescending. in fact emotion is nearly indiscernible with such a carefully constructed façade of NEUTRALITY. beneath umber cloak the dress is appropriate for travel, plain but made well. a worldly woman of some means, clearly, but then why was she here? while obviously not a colonist, there was no RING on her finger to indicate she had come to meet her british husband on the front like so many others did. if not an officers wife, who was she? )
( steady observance is interrupted as her attention is turned to the two men in the kitchen. related, father &. son most likely. the limp the older man has spurs some interest in the young nurse - she is teaching herself herbal medicine &. anatomy, so she cannot help but wonder to the cause of his disability. faint blush dusts high cheekbones once their attention turns to her, suddenly feeling RUDE for staring. midnight blue gaze remains trained on homey surroundings until the younger man walks into her view, fair brows rising politely. a few steps are taken towards him to address him in a CURIOUS accent - western european, probably dutch, though the accent is not heavy &. adds a musical lilt to perfect english. )
‘ good evening, sir. do you have any rooms available? ‘
( a small smile brightens her features upon inquiring, for GOOD measure. hers is a natural beauty, mere presence alone somehow TRANQUIL. still there is undoubtedly an aura of mystery, a RESERVED quiet that produces more questions than answers. )
