Diving into dramatics with Osama to Boku: Director Tetsu Maeda is the guy who brought you School Days with a Pig, and who also happens to direct the 2012 drama The Boy Inside (Osama to Boku) starring Tori Matsuzaka and fellow Topcoat artists Masaki Suda and Hiroki Aiba. The movie also features Ryuhei and Shota Matsuda’s mom Muyiki and critically aclaimed actress Fumi Nikaido who is figuring quite prominently in the current drama Woman and the upcoming Sion Sono movie, Why Dont You Play in Hell? You might say the movie has a great cast, with a somewhat tragic story, which is a big departure from the wacky scenes and comedic acts of Satoshi Tsumabuki in the earlier Maeda flick.

I can understand why an English translation of the movie is called The King and I, which might involved a select scene in the movie where Masaki wears a gold crown. You see, there are hints of tragedy spread all over the movie, which tells the story of two young kids (actually there are 3) who can’t be separated by accident and the people around them - a strong bond of friendship that encompasses time and relationships.
