what if we were at the end of our journey, and one of us had to die for the rest of the party to be able to get where we needed to go to save the world.

what if you were already dying and accepted that you would be the one to sacrifice yourself, because you know that i know that there are still important things left for me to do, and that, really, even if there weren't, you would never willingly let me sacrifice myself in your place if you were even given a real choice.

what if i refused. what if, despite knowing fully well what hung in the balance, i couldn't bring myself to allow this. what if i begged on the brink of tears for a different way, a different path to present itself, even though i knew it must have been impossible. what if i kept saying no as the rest of my party tried in vain to remind me that we'd already come so far, already lost people, already destroyed so much. how could i lose my nerve now?

and what if that just didn't matter to me anymore. what if i just couldn't let you die. what if i turned my blades against them, and made sure that none of them would get anywhere close to you. what if you stood frozen in place, unable to do anything besides watch in complete shock as i take them down one by one. what if i gave everything up, just for a little more time with you.

what if you finally admitted to yourself that this was exactly what you wanted. for me to choose you, over anyone else. what if this made you happy. what if you looked at me, stained by the blood of my comrades — my friends — and felt more at peace than you have since any of this began.
