12 feet deep taken from the 2017 film.
i’m glad you came. it’s been too long.
know what the worst part was? it was coming home to find you not there.
simmer down. i don’t think you’re gonna be doing anything.
you don’t know what it’s like. it’s like i have this giant, black, ugly thing inside me, rumbling, just eating at me.
it’s my turn to carry you now.
oh, boo-hoo. shut up.
can’t you take care of yourself?
i killed the monster.
you can do it. come on, baby.
just let me rest. think for a sec.
i love you. come on. breathe, baby, please.
this is real?
you little putz.
you can’t lie to me. your eyes are bugging out. you can barely stand.
you just got that fighting spirit in you, don’t you?
oh, yeah, oh, yeah, okay, i’ll just go and grab my tool belt.
you see all the signs hanging up around here? some people need to learn how to read.
that’s a page out of your book. not everybody thinks the way you do.
yeah, an attitude like that is probably what got you here in the first place.
just listen to me, okay? okay, you have lost so much.
it’s so typical of you. you get in a hard spot and you start digging at everyone around you until you strike a nerve.
some people need to learn how to kiss my ass.
we’re (sisters/brothers/siblings). we carry each other.
i’m here. just hang in there, okay?
i think that belongs in the lost and found.
i’m sure you feel pretty low, but trust me there’s always somebody lower than you.
hey, hey, hey, calm down, calm down.
why don’t you get out of here, you little shit.

the gift taken from the 2000 film.
something’s bad wrong with me.
doesn’t matter how i know. a little bird told me.
see you later, alligator.
he’s got a few nicks and bruises. i think he might have a pretty good black eye by tomorrow.
you’ve had icing enough to put you in a coma.
well, you put a pretty good dent in it.
you ever see anybody skin a squirrel? you stick a knife in its belly and zip.
your lip’s dragging the floor. it’s gonna freeze like that if you’re not careful.
sometimes i don’t even know the difference between my head or my soul.
messing with the devil’s gonna get you burned. everybody knows that.
you are a kid, honey.
well, come on over. i’ll make a bed for you.
it’s about time you started making things easier on me, (name), instead of harder. i’m very disappointed in you.
now, look, for all that you’ve done for me, i just think the world of you.
well, i don’t pretend to be a psychologist, but it’s obvious to me that your boy’s got a lot of anger in him.
you got to get help. legal help.
but i’m gonna kill this thing.
i thought you was supposed to be in the hospital.
i’m a little low on money this week.
listen, i want you to get some rest. you look terrible, okay?
always use your instinct, honey.
i just can’t get through a wall of some kind in my head.
hey, boy. i asked you a question.
but the night before, i had this real bad, bad dream, you know.
i don’t have anything to look forward to. maybe, you can give me some hope.
you sure scared me, hon.
how’d your arm get all scratched up?
there’s a saying about letting sleeping dogs lie.
you act like i’m a kid.
it just goes to show you can know somebody and not know ’em.
you gotta learn to deal with that.
i’ve been having some bad thoughts lately.
you’re my friend. you won’t.
something smells like cat pee.
i escaped. i’m free.
this kind of reminds me when i was a kid.
you’re about the only one i call a friend to me.
you need to lie down. i think if you sleep, you’ll feel better.
i guess i’m the last person you wanna see.
i dreamt that i was all by myself.
you’re the soul of this town. and you just need to keep doing what you’re doing.

the fifth wave taken from the 2016 film.
text me when you’re home.
this is a colt .45. this button changes out the clip.
come here. hold on to me.
it’s okay. just keep your head down, okay?
you were bleeding on the highway. i brought you back here to my house.
sing me a song.
pumpkin, there’s nothing safe anymore.
i know how to survive. and i was doing fine out there on my own.
come on, lazy bones. put your bear down, would you?
let me know if it starts hurting or anything like that.
this isn’t summer camp. you’re a soldier now.
put your leg over here. this is gonna hurt.
look up there, hon.
but you survived. it’s a miracle, the way that bullet went right through you and managed to miss everything important.
can you teach me that thing where you took the gun out of my hand?
i need my dad.
you drop your lie, and i’ll drop mine.
don’t be so scared of your weapon. you gotta think that the gun is a part of you.
growing up, there was this voice in my head. it was quiet, but it was there.
somebody there? i’m hurt.
just because some man in uniform tries to tell us what to do doesn’t mean we actually have to follow his orders.
don’t do that. don’t scare me like that.
i’ve been planting bombs.
you’re gonna carry this with you at all times, you’re not gonna tell anybody you have it, and you’re only gonna use it if it’s life or death.

the testaments taken from the 2019 margaret atwood book.
whatever happens, i want you to always remember that i have loved you very much.
you’re in shock. it’s no wonder.
they say i will always have the scar, but i’m almost better.
please don’t worry. god has told me it will be all right.
let’s get you upstairs, you need to lie down.
may i feel your forehead?
good luck on your mission.
it toughens you. you get stubborn.
you need to use the washroom.
don’t share too much about yourself. it will be used against you.
your friend has a big mouth.
the really bad thing happened on my birthday.
you are strong. strength is a gift.
there’s a place for you to sleep, in the hold.
i have faith. having faith is hard work sometimes.
did something unfortunate happen to you in your earlier life, my child?
when we get to the safe place, you must promise me you’ll eat something.
the soup. it’s like mouldy dishwater.
maybe i’m catching a cold.
someone was passing messages to them, from here to there.
pick something you’d never wear in real life. you need to look like a totally different person.
i’m just the delivery boy.
my dear. are you ill?
you should pray for your hatred to go away.
don’t go out. don’t look out the window. don’t use a phone.
that was my story to myself.
you’re shivering again.
did you lift me up and carry me?
now, i want you to sit in that chair and be a fly on the wall.
love is a discipline, like prayer. i’d like to pray for you, so you’ll feel better.
friendship, alas, can be skin deep.
want some? you can have half.
of course you don’t remember me. you were too young.
yuck won’t change the world. you need to get your hands dirty.
hold my flashlight.
doesn’t this place wear you down? it’s so bleak.
life sucks, end of story.
i wanted to have someone lift me up, then tuck me in.
this story is god’s way of telling us that we should be content with our lot and not rebel against it.
you will spend the afternoon at the store helping me out, period.
nobody is any authority on the fucks other people give.
at lunchtime our mouths are for eating, and we can’t talk and chew at the same time.
suit yourself, but they’ll have to report you to social services, and those folks will put you into foster care, and who knows how that’ll turn out?

bang! taken from the 2005 sharon g. flake book.
sad is yellow, like the sun first thing in the morning.
i didn’t mean for it to go that hard for you. but there’s lions and tigers everywhere.
baby. now you stay put.
go somewhere, kid.
you need medicine and food.
smoke this. you’ll feel better.
it’s a mess. but the sky’s always prettier after a good hard rain.
heard you wanna stay here awhile. it’s gonna cost ya.
the cellphone’s almost dead.
gotta get there well before the sun shows itself.
how come your eyes are red?
sugar pie, honey bunch. you know that i love you.
you can buy all kinds of stuff there. weed, liquor, guns.
hit me again and i’ll smash your head in.
a penny for your thoughts.
you too scared to carry it, but you wanna kill it. that ain’t right.
you blow your chance, you blow your life.
she made me pancakes and sausage.
you had a problem. you tried to fix it. fixing just made it worse.
i’ll call somebody today. anybody.
you ain’t gotta like a gun to shoot one.
stuffing food in your mouth like you haven’t eaten in months, when late last night you ate everything in sight.
no more weed for you.
‘cause if you can’t handle your liquor, you can’t handle the rest of the stuff going on round here.
gumption. being out there gave you gumption.
like the sun. like my son.
all i need is two dollars for food.
what’s between a father and his son can’t be burned by fire, washed away by water, or destroyed with human hands.

the brave cowboy taken from the 1956 edward abbey book.
you’re not supposed to run around without any identification.
there’s something in my eye. see if you can find it.
i’m dreaming like a kid on the night before christmas, like an angel the day before easter.
you’ve got dough all over your hands.
you’re about three hours too late for that, cowboy.
soon as you eat, i’m going to put something on that massacred face of yours.
it’s all right. i put an elastic bandage on it.
my body’s here but the spirit’s free as a bluebird.
what i’m afraid of is me.
put your hands behind your head and turn around.
well, i was just young enough and dumb enough to laugh.
you might at least let me wash the blood off your cheek.
i remember when i was a kid.
take this, young man, and enjoy yourself.
you’re gonna be all right, buddy.
well, hell, use a ball bat. and strike first, from behind.
you’re my angel.
don’t worry about it. just bring me whatever you have.
that broken tooth may give you trouble.
if i had to choose between my country and my friend, i’d choose my friend.
can’t take canned goods. too heavy, too bulky.
let me see that ankle.
i’m a damned worried angel.
bullshit. i know a broken leg when i see one.

the hunt for red october taken from the 1984 tom clancy book.
supposedly the first thing that surprises people, people from your part of the world, is going through a supermarket.
that’s one very sick kid you have in there.
your idea depends a lot on sleight of hand.
you don’t have to die, my friend. if you just set the gun down.
i took my time sewing it up.
we’ll meet back here at 3:30, depending on how the meeting goes.
you hide a submarine by sinking it.
americans eat big breakfasts.
it’s a war, a real war. you did well.
looks like you broke some glass the hard way.
when we do go after this character, it’ll be a long, tough hunt.
i’ve read about worse hypothermia cases in the literature, but this is by far the worst i’ve ever seen.
but you have to follow the rules. that means you scrub, change into sterile clothing, and follow the instructions of the duty nurse.
you took a foolish chance.
a joke like this ought to earn somebody a bullet.
if they start shooting at us, it’ll get awful lonesome – then it’ll get awful exciting.
i understand our patient woke up.
any time you walk out of a hospital you feel good. even if you are dead.
took the chance to read a magazine.
you don’t worry till it stops bleeding.
i’ll go to the president myself on this, son.
we have a possible survivor in the water.

echo taken from the 2015 pam muñoz ryan book.
i know the safe places to sleep, the soup kitchens.
live. you must live.
here i come, ready or not.
don’t look at the ground. it’ll make you dizzy.
everybody has a heart. sometimes you gotta work hard to find it.
and you were not gone overnight. you have only been missing since the morning.
we need to get the mail and laundry before dark.
you are starry-eyed.
this heat has about got me beat.
rest now, for you have a bad bump on your head.
you keep your hands to yourself.
this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our family.
a lip so swollen he can barely talk, a cut on his forehead that had to be stitched, and a broken wrist. he’ll wear the sling for weeks.
and so you will. slumber now.
people who used to be friends are no longer friends. neighbors are not neighbors.
practice this week and come back and make me proud.
those are the very characters from this story.
the incident was nothing more than boys being boys, a little playground bullying.
maybe in a few weeks, but you look fine for now.
but it’s only a harmonica.
you barely sleep, you pick at your food, your work at the factory has slowed.
hush, little baby, don’t you cry.

emmet otter’s jug-band christmas taken from the 1971 russell hoban book.
i’ve got a kazoo.
we’ll get by somehow. we always have.
after you have some dinner.
i don’t quite understand the whole thing.
fifty dollars cash. how’s that for a prize?
there’s no odd jobs this year.
you better get with the beat, if we’re going to win.
i guess i ought to feel pretty bad, but the funny thing is that i don’t.
the trouble is, once you make a hole in the tub it won’t hold water anymore.
i can’t make a nickel.
nothing wrong with mufflers and mittens. it’s the thought that counts.
and your meals are on the house.
did you get my note?
you set a washtub upside down, stand a broom handle up on the rim, and run a string from the top of the broom handle down through a little hole in the center of the tub. then you strum it like a regular bass fiddle.

longlegs taken from the 2024 film.
that kid smelled like narcotics.
this is a cruel world. especially for the little things.
you a baseball fan, (name)?
i just can’t sleep. a lot on my mind.
yeah, that couldn’t be anything but a coincidence.
we had such a big laugh about it.
this is the part where you get to do the things the grownups don’t wanna do anymore.
it’s hard to explain. it’s like something tapping me on the shoulder, telling me where to look.
honey, our prayers protect us from the devil.
there you go, take a nice long look.
i’m just a friend of a friend.
that messes up kids.
oh, but it seems i wore my long legs today.
i’m gonna make you something to eat.
right under your feet.
and what’s your name, little angel?
you had a visitor yesterday.
prayers don’t do a goddamn thing.
but your work’s over. it’s done, and you’re gonna be in here for the rest of your life.
half-psychic is better than not psychic at all, i’d say.
different. it’s like a long dream. and so dark. a world of dark.
there she is, the almost birthday girl.
honey, maybe now would be a good time to bring out the cake.
you’re not a child because you were allowed to grow up.
and you’re free, too, baby girl.
do you want to see my room?
gave a description of a trespasser. tall and pale.
you didn’t have to come with me.
just dropping off an early birthday gift, a gift from the church.
i’m doing this for you. just like i’ve always done.
i’ll be a little bit of everywhere. waiting in the wings.
you can read about it in the file.
all of your things, it’s all in your room.

suncoast taken from the 2024 film.
you should board up the windows.
i’ve been looking everywhere for you. what, you just walk off?
you take the food. you’re skinny as a rail.
you’re going to fall.
and i know you’re a good kid.
man, i’m so tired.
okay, kid, you ready to go?
you don’t have to talk about this if you don’t want to.
you’re being weird.
christ, it ain’t a competition. but if it was, you’d be winning.
you don’t tell someone that. you don’t lie about that.
that was a dumb-ass thing to say.
i just wanted to make sure you’re all right.
we’re gonna have fun again, you and me, when this is over.
do people, like, actually like to hear “i’m sorry for your loss?”
no, no, no buts.
my head is killing me, and this isn’t helping.
you want to be a normal teenager.
you break all the rules, and i’m the bad guy.
i bet you can’t even see your shadow.
it’s about to expire. you can just have it.
all right, sweetheart, sorry.
everyone says this neighborhood is scary, but, like, when you’re in it, it’s like, not that scary.
this storm could be a real bitch.
you know, you could just try and think about someone other than yourself.
you’re going to hurt the chef’s feelings. now you eat this.
sometimes you need a break.
i’m so proud of you right now. i think i’m going to cry.
oh, my god, you’re like an alien.
you’ll miss everything. all the good, all the bad. hell, especially the bad.
whoa, what’s your hurry? am i that boring?

a parchment of leaves taken from the 2001 silas house book.
lay back down, now. be still, little bird.
terror does things to you. it hardens a part of you.
you’ve put on weight.
come on, baby. we’re going somewhere.
the trick is to hold your breath. that way you don’t taste it.
it’s a copperhead. where did it strike?
nobody in this world knows it but me and you.
you don’t think about helping a child. you just do it.
it’s your gut, where all real feelings come from.
fever makes one hateful.
you’re going to be the talk of the country.
if a snake strikes, you must kill it.
that’s a big trip. you’ve lost your senses.
it’s all right. mommy’s got you.
the lord is dealing with you.
looks like people would have better things to do.
i’ve already dug the grave. spent all day on it.
carrying around a lie is the worst kind of labor.
live, little tree. grow big and stay here with me on this creek.

the buffalo tree taken from the 1997 adam rapp book.
you can just pick that quarter up and stick it in your pocket.
that van out there is gonna leave you.
you stuck me in my eyetooth.
just keep your head.
i’ll bust a hole in your chest.
go on and hit me.
you best get inside, then.
i hate how that notebook’s got all of that shit in it about me.
can you sit?
the dead tree. i’d chop that shit down.
let’s try and get away from the slop for a minute.
you can look at a picture and in your mind you can turn that picture into a movie.
it’s a federal offense, you know. blowing up a mailbox.
you better put those eyes back where they belong.
you wanna fight me for it?
that’s a kid’s book, man.
hey, moms.
ain’t seen you in the longest.
you can’t even explain that kind of silence.
thanks for throwing that rock.
you got about five seconds.
you’re clean.
if you escape you can snatch on to some driftwood and float away.
you can help yourself by helping us.

sang spell taken from the 1998 phyllis reynolds naylor book.
you owe me.
this might be my last chance to leave.
i’ve brought you a leg of chicken and some white beans.
some guy picked me up on the road out there, then jumped me and stole my money.
your shirt is soaked. that means the fever’s broken.
you wonder why you are here.
but don’t forget to jog between runs.
i’ve got a broken rib.
because if you don’t, i slit your throat.
you can hardly sit up without groaning.
think survival.
you read about bad things in every newspaper.
because i wanted to take my time getting down there – get my head together.
i sleep like the dead.
it will never heal properly if you keep jostling it.
all’s fair in war, you know.
i’ve long wondered about this myself.
break the spell.
we’ve taken all the tins of food we found.
i was in pretty bad shape.
there were footsteps and voices right outside my window.
this old body needs all the warmth it can get.
you took a boat and lost it.
it’s up to you.
that’s the part that scares me. that you would do something so dangerous to get out, to go back.

little chicago taken from the 2002 adam rapp book.
maybe you should put a band-aid on it.
you seem like you’re in outer space today.
that’s my glock.
you’re on the second floor of st. joseph’s hospital.
breathe. through your nose.
you look a little faint.
it’s like your psychic load. a collection of all your fuck-ups.
don’t you dare do that.
you’re a little young for a sidearm, don’t you think?
a twenty-two revolver. it’s in my pocket right now.
i believe in lessons. a lesson taught is a lesson learned.
you break my heart when you say things like that.
the crow is supposed to be a symbol of darkness and starvation.
you’re bleeding all over the place.
my brain hurts.
people just expect stuff from you when they start giving you things.
you always hear about gang activity on this side of town.
if you follow a deer long enough something amazing happens.
you got scratches all over your legs.
if you’re broke i’ll give you half my sandwich.
watch out for the gangs.
just wear it inside out. you can tear off the tag if you want.
we’re just going to get some of these cuts cleaned up and then the doctor will need to examine you.
what happened to your shirt?
you smell like the bottom of a popcorn box.
twenty-two revolver. shoot ’em up wild west style.
it feels like there’s a fist in my stomach.

where all light tends to go taken from the 2015 david joy book.
best to just keep things like that to yourself.
went through a window and got cut up.
talk shit when you’re free. shut up in the cuffs.
there’s no hiding who you belong to.
you’re the highlight of my day.
bloodied the hell out of those knuckles.
you’ve been in there hugged up to the toilet all goddamn day.
that’s a horrible thing, what happened. a horrible, horrible thing for a boy your age to see.
i don’t have much use for church anymore.
ain’t ever seen the likes of something so wild.
that shit’s not like other drugs. i mean, it’s not like smoking weed or eating a couple of pills.
you’re so full of shit.
thought you might want somebody to back up your story.
aw, i’m always worth talking to.
there you are, dear.
use your fucking head.
you got any weapons on you, boy?
i’m telling you because i know how that shit would eat at you.
a man can know all the verses in the book, but it’s no good if you don’t know jesus.
i suggest you go find some other place to be a fucking hero, because nobody wants you here.
whether it’s in a courtroom or at the right hand of god, they’ll have to answer for what they’ve done.

once upon a river taken from the 2011 bonnie jo campbell book.
even if you aren’t going to answer, you’ve got to listen when i talk to you.
i was bored out of my skull at home.
when you’re in a strange land, you have to depend on the generosity of the local inhabitants.
it’s you. you feeling okay?
speak up. you’re not mute.
you make every night a cuss fest.
so you’ve come to me armed and dangerous this time.
every person out there is a nut you can’t crack.
the ground’s frozen. nobody’s digging a hole.
you have a mark there from his boot.
i just can’t believe you’re here. right here with me. like a ghost.
that was a sign of depression, my doctor says.
everybody’s a kid compared to me. even people my age seem like kids.
you have got to stop this slaughter, child.
i’ve seen some weird things since i’ve been in this state.
you take note, kid.
i’m giving you that twelve-gauge. that’s your shotgun now.
tell me what you’re feeling.
being (age) doesn’t exempt you from the law.
rich folks get uneasy about poor folks carrying firearms.
you think before you shoot.
it’s almost christmas. i want to buy you a present.
