Barbie is about choice but not in the blind “every choice a woman makes is feminist even if it’s influenced by the patriarchy” kind of way. But because she truly did self reflection on herself and society’s influence on her.

The ending has her joining a world where not only will she die, she will lose the looks that society values her for by aging. She looked at a visibly aged, confident old woman at the bus stop and said “i want to turn out like her”.

That woman didn’t try to be humble when Barbie called her beautiful, she said “i know”. And that response from her, is considered “conceited” or “vain” by patriarchal society. You’re not supposed to know your beautiful under this system, especially when you’re old, with wrinkles, and not thin.

That ending choice is devoid of any thought of what the men in the real world would want. She’s thinking about becoming that old woman, about living a full life despite change and struggles that may come her way in the real world. It is genuinely, GENUINELY, a choice that is liberating.

i think this is my fav lumity moment in the finale bc i love how you can tell they’ve been together a while by this point just from the way amity kisses her cheek without any hesitation and luz instinctively puts her arms around her even tho her attention’s on the others

"I have all this cool, complicated wordbuilding I want to use, but I don't want to slow the narrative to a crawl by constantly stopping to explain stuff" so just don't. Use made-up words without defining them. Let things pass without comment. Have the narrative voice remark on exceptions to the setting's norms without ever explicitly establishing what those norms are. Treat it like you're writing the fourth book in a series and the reader already knows all this shit, and if they can't figure it out from context, fuck 'em.
