K-Pop Spotlight: IZ*ONE
We’ve had heart eyes for this girl group since their days on the Mnet reality competition show, Produce 48. Now a fully debuted group with their first comeback under their belt, IZ*ONE is painting the town red yet again with catchy new comeback song, Violeta, and mini-album, HEART*IZ (see what we did there?).
We’re starting off our K-pop spotlight series with a bang by highlighting the 12-member South Korean-Japanese girl group in the best way we know how—by asking about their biggest fears, their dream collab, and, of course, Violeta. Read on for our full Q&A with IZ*ONE!
How would you describe your sound and how it differs from La Vie en Rose?
WON YOUNG: If La Vie en Rose expresses passion, Violeta is more about love and support.
NAKO: Our new track, Violeta, has a brighter and more refreshing vibe!
What was the most challenging part about preparing for this comeback?
HYE WON: I can’t really say it was challenging, but we worked really hard so we can bring better music and performances to our fans.
YU JIN: Since we have 12 members, we had a hard time keeping our choreography in sync, but we were really happy and thankful that a lot of people enjoyed our comeback.
NAKO: I worked hard on my pronunciation to make sure the Korean lyrics were expressed more clearly.
What’s your dream collaboration and why?
CHAE WON: I feel every artist has their own musical color, so it’s really an honor for me to work with any artist.
SAKURA: I really love Red Velvet sunbae-nims and respect them, so I would love to perform with them one day.
What’s the most important piece of advice you’ve received?
EUN BI: “Effort won’t betray you” is a quote that really stayed in my heart.
CHAE YEON: Someone once told me, “you’re doing great,” and that really gave me a lot of strength.
YE NA: My father always says, “If you work hard, anything is possible.” I always try to remember his advice.
What’s one thing that scares you and one thing that excites you?
WON YOUNG: Ghosts! Spending time with IZ*ONE is one thing that excites me!
YU RI: Me too, ghosts! And one thing that excites me is being on stage.
What led each of you to pursue a career as a performer?
EUN BI: When I was younger, my heart used to race when I saw people performing on stage. That’s when I knew that I had to do this (laughs).
YU RI: Whenever I was singing and dancing, I always had so much fun, so my dream and passion to become a singer grew bigger.
Biggest goals for this comeback?
HITOMI: One goal is to work harder so people all over the world can recognize IZ*ONE!
MIN JU: I hope we can meet our fans more often and give off a healthy, positive energy.
CHAE YEON: Through this comeback, I hope we can promote IZ*ONE more. And as we’ve grown to rely on each other and think about one another more, I hope our synergy can create a bigger energy which we can pass on to our fans.

The saddest thing about living in the Philippines is that on the one hand we want local businesses to get bigger and to be more self-sustaining but on the other hand foreign businesses are the ones that actually pay us anything remotely close to a living wage so it’s the struggle to choose between turning your back on working for local business for the sake of a halfway decent quality of life or practice patriotism by working 15 hours a day for shit pay

Coming out of my den...
Today is a good, positive day for me. Whenever sad or negative thoughts enter my mind I consciously block it at get it off right away. For the longest time I’ve let sadness and negativity fill me. I imagine scenarios wherein people are just out there to offend me, hurt me and judge me, then I feel anxiety, anger, hurt and sadness. I felt unloved. Unloved by myself and the people who I trust the most. People have a hard time understanding me, they run away when I show my vulnerability. I know I am too intense and I guess it’s too much for them. What really pushed me down was losing the only person who I trust completely. I can tell her anything and everything and I just become amazed on how much she understands me and gets me even if I don’t understand my self. Losing her was devastating for me. Whenever I need advice about something that’s taking a toll on me, i can’t find anyone willing to try and decipher me and my thoughts.It’s hard to find someone who knows and understands the darkest parts of you. It was hard letting her go. I was so scared. Scared of my thoughts, my feelings and myself, ‘cause sometimes i don’t get me. And I fight an endless internal battle and end up hating myself. I felt empty. I felt like sadness is the only state of my being.But at the end of the day the only person who will pick me up from the bottom is me. I know that in order to be able to truly love myself, I need to start trusting and relying in me. I need to make peace with my past and feel all the love that I know I could give not just to my self but also to everyone around me. I’ve realized how powerful the love i could give the world through my passions. And I started to feel hopeful. I’m falling in love with myself again. I see the passion and love burning brightly within me. And I know i deserve all the happiness the world has to offer.
To my self:
You know that you are capable of great things. You know that you could move mountains, transform anything into something great. Just always know that you are worth it and you deserve all things great. Always know that no matter what I love you and support you and I’m always here for you. Believe in your self.
