location : the entrance to french court, late evening

the night air was still thick with the heat of the day, as though the sun itself still lingered in the dark sky. it was much warmer here than switzerland, warmer even than england (where she had stopped on the journey over). her first proper time in france, and it was everything she could have imagined - perhaps even greater. staring up at the palace, her eyes were wide with wonder. the humble stone castle she knew to be home paled in comparison to the palace before her. the checkerboard floors, the golden archways and windows taller than the fir trees of home. her late arrival was expected, she had been invited to join her brothers now that it seemed to be safe for her to attent french court and though she had done her best to arrive quietly, there were still a few members of the court standing ready to greet her - she was still a crown princess, after all. "this is magnificent."

corina had arrived late the night before, so as not to cause any great fuss upon her arrival. though she wasn't entirely sure there would be much fuss for her entering french court, there would have likely been some chatter around the palace at the arrival of a new princess. summer here was warmer - quite a bit warmer - than home, and taking a stroll in the gardens around versailles was rather pleasant, particularly when a slight summer breeze would blow through her blonde locks.

"not to compliment, merely to make the observation that french seem to adore flowers...and to thank you for the invitation. i am glad to finally join my brothers here." of course, she did too, but her few encounters since her arrival had all been flower-related. "though it is a beautiful painting, perhaps you were born to the wrong role." she knew that feeling.

𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 : underneath one of the many gazebos .

𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐫𝐚 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐭 & 𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐫𝐚 𝐬𝐮𝐧 , but also known for the vibrancy it brings to the rolling glades of the versailles palace grounds . an extracurricular she picked up in her youth , delphine had an underlying love ( & somewhat talent ) for painting . although she was more in the habit of having her easel set up by her chamber window , the french princess decided that being outside may be a nice ... change of scenery ( & perhaps , a break from painting lightening storms ) . she was midway through finishing a few petals on one of the many flowers she had painted near the bottom of her canvas when she heard the footsteps of another approaching . looking up , her brush ceased — the hand holding artist's palette dropping slightly . " if you've come to compliment my painting in an effort to bribe for some of my lemonade , the answer is no ... "

"i must confess, they are rather beautiful." corina gazed at the colours the other held in her grasp. each petal seemed to shimmer with a different tone to the one it overlapped, almost like fish scales. "we have flowers in switzerland, but not these particular ones ... they are lovely." corina recognised the girl, but perhaps only in passing at an event many years ago. "you seem familiar to me., have we met?"

        only  spring  rivaled  her  love  for  summer. the weather each day was bright and warm, and the flora was full of color. katherine wandered through the gardens, a small bouquet of flowers in her hand and eyes searching for more blooms to add to it. the ones previously in the wright apartments had all wilted, and the maids had no eye for this sort of thing; the one bouquet she'd let them bring had been quickly discarded. nothing less than perfection accepted. apparently that meant she must do it herself. so be it. kat was admiring the carnations when footsteps neared.   ❝ beautiful, isn't it? ❞   she asked, gaze remaining on the flowers a moment longer before she turned.

HISTORY

growing up knowing she was to be the next in line to the throne, corina always struggled somewhat with her parents' views on how she should be treated. she wanted to be running free, climbing trees and swimming in icy lakes. and yet, she couldn't. she had to maintain her safety and preserve the 'proper' role the crown required of her. her brothers and her always had a slight distance between them, a distance that has grown even greater in more recent years. you see, corina deeply believes that switzerland's role in the world is to be neutral...so with the emerging potential of that not being the case, she has come (albeit slightly later than her brothers) to france to scope what could be. the current ruler of switzerland believes they have squashed corina's beliefs in a true neutral switzerland, as does most of the court and even her brothers - but nothing can stop her. she is good at playing her role as the future queen, and she really will do anything for her country - even hide parts of herself she wishes to set free if need be.
