CAS FAIR DAY!

It finally happened! After preparing the fair for months, we were finally able to show and share the projects all IB students have been working on for the last two years!

Throughout the fair, students got to add stamps to their passport (designed by our classmates) every time they visited a station at the fair. Every station was different, some featuring CAS projects like the race car and movie station and others encouraging the students to engage with the program, like the IB information point and CAS-themed mural.

All of our classmates worked hard to make the fair happen, they did four times what was asked of them. We truly couldn't be more helpful for all their hard work and collaboration, they made this simple idea transform into a real project and I think that only goes to show that they were just as excited as us to share their CAS experience. Im confident that all who participated will grow to become leading figures in whatever field they choose due to their hardworking and proactive nature.

¡DÍA DE LA FERIA DE CAS!

¡Por fin! Después de meses de preparación, ¡por fin pudimos mostrar y compartir los proyectos en los que todos los alumnos del IB han estado trabajando durante los últimos dos años!

Durante la feria, los alumnos pudieron añadir sellos a sus pasaportes (diseñados por nuestros compañeros) cada vez que visitaban una estación. Cada estación era diferente: algunas presentaban proyectos de CAS, como la de coches de carreras y la de películas, y otras animaban a los alumnos a participar en el programa, como el punto de información del IB y el mural con temática de CAS.

Todos nuestros compañeros se esforzaron mucho para que la feria fuera una realidad; hicieron cuatro veces más de lo que se les pidió. De verdad, su esfuerzo y colaboración fueron de gran ayuda; hicieron que esta simple idea se convirtiera en un proyecto real, y creo que eso demuestra que estaban tan emocionados como nosotros por compartir su experiencia de CAS. Estoy seguro de que todos los que participaron se convertirán en figuras destacadas en cualquier campo que elijan debido a su naturaleza trabajadora y proactiva.

Tharu's Home Photography!

I invited my talented friend home, she is studying photography and to build her portfolio and experiences, we took several product pictures of candles. She was very creative and had an incredibly good eye for photography; always finding the best angles and elements to compliment every product. I was fascinated by her creativity and really hope I get to see her in action again soon! Thank you Tharu!

Invité a mi talentosa amiga a casa. Ella estudia fotografía y, para ampliar su portafolio y sus experiencias, tomamos varias fotos de velas. Spooky Workshop!

For Halloween, my peers and I prepared decorations for the little kids’ Halloween day. It was very fun to prepare all the decorations and they turned out better than I expected. Although the organisation did seem quite stressful, my classmates managed to do well and came out with awesome decorations for the kids. I wish I could’ve seen the childrens’ faces, nevertheless, the preparations were full of lighthearted moments that got us into a perfect spooky mood! As always, working in groups helped us build a community.

Para Halloween, mis compañeros y yo preparamos decoraciones para el día de Halloween de los niños pequeños. Fue muy divertido preparar todas las decoraciones y resultaron mejor de lo que esperaba. Aunque la organización parecía bastante estresante, mis compañeros de clase se las arreglaron para hacerlo bien y terminaron teniendo decoraciones increíbles para los niños. Ojalá hubiera podido ver las caras de los niños, sin embargo, los preparativos estuvieron llenos de momentos alegres que nos pusieron en un estado de ánimo espeluznante perfecto. Como siempre, trabajar en grupo ha fortalecido el aspecto comunitario de la promoción.

Tabata run

On a particulary cold day when many students were busy during CAS hour to prepare halloween decorations, my peers and I joined the first year class in a Tabata session organised by Ceci and Borja. The circuit made us work different muscle groups in short exercises before moving on to the next part of the course. I had a lot of fun with Eugenia and Katia and believe that the overall sense of unity between classes made the experience more enjoyable. The music definitely added liveliness to the atmosphere and I'm confident we all had fun.

En un día especialmente frío en el que muchos estudiantes estaban ocupados durante la hora de CAS preparando decoraciones de Halloween, mis compañeros y yo nos unimos a la clase de primer año en una sesión de Tabata organizada por Ceci y Borja. El circuito nos hizo trabajar diferentes grupos musculares en ejercicios cortos antes de pasar a la siguiente parte del curso. Me divertí mucho con Eugenia y Katia y creo que la sensación general de unidad entre las clases hizo que la experiencia fuera más agradable. La música definitivamente agregó animación al ambiente y estoy segura de que todos nos divertimos.

Latest episodes

As per usual, Irene and I have recorded our podcast during the last few months. One of them, episode 6, was dedicated to mental health and the other, episode 7, was dedicated to summer and how we dealt with the internal assesmentes. Overall, the experience was very gratifying and entertaining. Episode 6 touches a serious topic, as interviews tend to, it is always interesting to learn from others on that which they are passionate about. Yu was a wonderful guest with lots of critical insights on todays worlds and teens, plus, her cheery attitude made the serious topic easy to talk about and the episode lively. Episode 7 has a more reflective nature with both Irene and I reviewing our good ideas and mistakes in terms of tackling the IB summer as well as our hopes for the upcoming school year. It was a great way to prepare for our second year and left me hopeful and motivated to finish this diploma.

Como es habitual, Irene y yo hemos grabado nuestro podcast durante los últimos meses. Uno de ellos, el episodio 6, estuvo dedicado a la salud mental y el otro, el episodio 7, estuvo dedicado al verano y a cómo afrontamos las evaluaciones internas. En general, la experiencia fue muy gratificante y entretenida. El episodio 6 toca un tema serio, como suelen hacer las entrevistas, siempre es interesante aprender de los demás sobre aquello que les apasiona. Yu fue una invitada maravillosa con muchas ideas críticas sobre el mundo actual y los adolescentes, además, su actitud alegre hizo que fuera fácil hablar sobre el tema serio y que el episodio fuera animado. El episodio 7 tiene un carácter más reflexivo, en el que tanto Irene como yo repasamos nuestras buenas ideas y errores en cuanto a afrontar el verano del IB, así como nuestras esperanzas para el próximo año escolar. Fue una excelente manera de prepararnos para nuestro segundo año y me dejó esperanzada y motivada para terminar este diploma.

Student Guide

To start the school year off right, some classmates and I have signed up to volunteer on the first day of school to guide the new students to their classes. It is something simple for us and for the teachers it would be a lot of work, we simply arrive at school a little early and take each student to their class. I was with some lovely girls from 2nd ESO and I think it was a productive experience for everyone.

Para empezar bien el curso, unos compañeros y yo nos hemos apuntado a un voluntariado el primer día escolar del curso para guiar a los nnuevos alumnos a sus clases. Es algo sencillo para nosotros y que para los profesores sería mucho trabajo, simplemente llegamos un poco antes al colegio y llevamos a cada alumno a su clase. Yo estuve con unas niñas encantadoras de 2º ESO y creo que ha sido una experiencia productiva para todos.

Everyone comes back to school!

The Red Cross has been working hard throughout the weekend to encourage buyers to contribute to their Back to school campaign where they collect school material that people buy when they go shopping. There were three posts, one in front of the entrance, another in the hallway and a third right outside the cash registers. Irene and I were there from 10am-2pm moved throughout all three but spent most of the time at the first post, approachig cutomers to inform them of the project.

It was mostly exhausting, most customers weren't too accepting or patient. Most of them were focused on getting their shopping done and, while I have no right to juge or decide how they should act, I did feel quite down after receiving around 40 mean stares per hour. However, for every 10 glares or ignorant passerbys there is 1 patient listener or contributer that replenished our energy.

I cannot say it wasn't gratifying though because when we got to the third post and collected all the material filling up the carts was the most hopeful thing ever. We got to collect a ton of things, specially from families whose kids brought plastic bags full of school supplies. Their parents took the chance to teach their children the importance to share and being involved with the rest of the world.

In the end, we got two carts full of school supplies and met a wonderful team. It was very energising to be there with Irene and to wear the Red Cross coat which gaves us a sense of responsibility and meant we were to be on our best behaviour and mindset.

¡Todos vuelven al cole!

La Cruz Roja ha trabajado arduamente durante todo el fin de semana para alentar a los compradores a contribuir con su campaña de regreso al cole, en la que recolectan material escolar que la gente compra cuando va de compras. Había tres puestos, uno frente a la entrada, otro en el pasillo y un tercero justo afuera de las cajas registradoras. Irene y yo estuvimos allí desde las 10:00 a las 14:00 horas y nos movimos por los tres puestos, pero pasamos la mayor parte del tiempo en el primer puesto, acercándonos a los clientes para informarles sobre el proyecto.

Fue agotador en su mayor parte, la mayoría de los clientes no fueron demasiado receptivos ni pacientes. La mayoría de ellos estaban concentrados en hacer sus compras y, aunque no tengo derecho a juzgar ni decidir cómo deberían actuar, me sentí bastante deprimido después de recibir alrededor de 40 miradas maliciosas por hora. Sin embargo, por cada 10 miradas de desaprobación o transeúntes ignorantes hay 1 oyente paciente o colaborador que repone nuestra energía.

No puedo decir que no fue gratificante, porque cuando llegamos al tercer puesto y juntamos todo el material, llenar los carritos fue lo más esperanzador del mundo. Pudimos recoger un montón de cosas, especialmente de familias cuyos hijos trajeron bolsas de plástico llenas de material escolar. Sus padres aprovecharon la oportunidad para enseñar a sus hijos la importancia de compartir y de involucrarse con el resto del mundo.

Al final, conseguimos dos carritos llenos de material escolar y conocimos a un equipo maravilloso. Fue muy estimulante estar allí con Irene y llevar la bata de la Cruz Roja, que nos dio un sentido de responsabilidad y significó que debíamos comportarnos y tener la mejor actitud.

The Mountains from below, above and everything in between

As I stated before, I visited Benasque and Cerler this summer and used the chance to do some hiking. I tried out three routes Cerler-Benasque (1), Las Tres Cascadas (2) y El Rincón del Cielo (3).

The first route was the hardest for me, it was long and done through a shaded forest. There were no viewing points or nice places but it definetely served to make the others much easier and let me spend time with family.

The second route is the classis and most touristic. Its name is very descriptive because you go through three waterfalls. It was packed with people but definetely a sight worth seeing. The only issue I had was the obnoxious amount of people and the uncomfortable some thin tracks were.

The last one was my favourite. We mounted a chair lift from Cerler and hiked up to a summit were a bench lies with the words "Cerler enamora", then we hiked back down and ate at a restaurant near the top of the chairlift that offered pizza made on a stone oven.

Overall, it was a very enjoyable experience that let me test the limits of my body while spending quality time with my family.

Las montañas desde abajo, desde arriba y todo lo demás

Como ya he dicho antes, este verano he visitado Benasque y Cerler y he aprovechado para hacer senderismo. He probado tres rutas: Cerler-Benasque (1), Las Tres Cascadas (2) y El Rincón del Cielo (3).

La primera ruta fue la más dura para mí, era larga y se hacía por un bosque en sombra que parecía una jungla. No había miradores ni lugares bonitos, pero sin duda sirvió para hacer las otras mucho más fáciles y me permitió pasar tiempo con la familia.

La segunda ruta es la clásica y la más turística. Su nombre es muy descriptivo porque pasas por tres cascadas. Estaba abarrotada de gente, pero sin duda es un espectáculo que merece la pena ver. El único problema que tuve fue la cantidad de gente y lo incómodas que eran algunas pistas estrechas.

La última fue mi favorita. Montamos en telesilla desde Cerler y subimos a una cima donde había un banco con las palabras "Cerler enamora", después bajamos y nos detuvimos en un restaurante cerca de la cima del telesilla que ofrecía pizza hecha en un horno de piedra.

En general, fue una experiencia muy agradable que me permitió probar los límites de mi cuerpo mientras pasaba tiempo de calidad con mi familia.

Natural lights, old camera, action!

This summer we returne to Benasque and Cerler for a second time. And this time, instead of spending time in the pintoresque town we went hiking so i took the chande to bring together my old photography lessons and olympus 200. I intended to edit the photos after shooting but my editing skills are a mess and cannot replace the appeal of the saturated colours of the camera. This device, despite it's age is much better than my phone, with a higher resolution, nicer colours and overall better quality. I enjoyed using it very much and in spite of the beautiful colours shown in landscapes my favourite pictures are those of my family. The sentimental factor of cameras is capturing a candid moment in time. Mountains and trees will be there for a long time but smiles are quickly fading and capturing them holds more value. Basically, I am proud of this trip, the memories and pictures we made.

Luces naturales, cámara antigua, ¡acción!

Este verano volvimos a Benasque y Cerler por segunda vez. Y esta vez, en lugar de pasar tiempo en el pintoresco pueblo, fuimos de excursión, así que aproveché la oportunidad de reunir mis antiguas lecciones de fotografía y la Olympus 200. Tenía la intención de editar las fotos después de hacerlas, pero mis habilidades de edición son un desastre y no pueden reemplazar el atractivo de los colores saturados de la cámara. Este dispositivo, a pesar de su edad, es mucho mejor que mi teléfono, con una resolución más alta, colores más bonitos y una mejor calidad en general. Disfruté mucho usándolo y, a pesar de los hermosos colores que muestran los paisajes, mis fotos favoritas son las de mi familia. El factor sentimental de las cámaras es capturar un momento espontáneo en el tiempo. Las montañas y los árboles estarán allí durante mucho tiempo, pero las sonrisas se desvanecen rápidamente y capturarlos tiene más valor. Básicamente, estoy orgulloso de este viaje, los recuerdos y las fotos que hicimos.

21 days exercise

For 21 days, I exercised every day for around 15 minutes. It was little time and the real effort came from the discipline it took. Although it seems ridiculous, setting apart time of my day for 21 days was a healthy way to build a habit and now i exercise for about 40 minutes 4 times a week. It isn't much and I dont pretend to change my body, all I intend is to move on to a healthier lifestyle.

Durante 21 días hice ejercicio todos los días durante unos 15 minutos. Era poco tiempo y el verdadero esfuerzo venía de la disciplina que implicaba. Aunque parezca ridículo, reservar un tiempo de mi día durante 21 días fue una forma saludable de crear un hábito y ahora hago ejercicio durante unos 40 minutos 4 veces por semana. No es mucho y no pretendo cambiar mi cuerpo, lo único que pretendo es pasar a un estilo de vida más saludable.

The meaning of flowers

I found my old notebook and very horrible drawings of what I assumed to be flowers within the dusty paper. To try and rescue the good, once better, drawings I chose my favourite flowers and briefly researched their meaning and a reference image. Then, I drew a picture of each flower and wrote its meaning beside it before going over the whole thing in black pen. The flowers represented are:

Lillies

Hydrangena

Chrysanthemums

Lillies of the valley

Lavender

Apparently, the meaning of these has changed a lot over the years and, against IB fashion, I added no citations to my notebook due to their repulsive appearance. I enjoyed the drafting but not the lineart.

El significado de las flores

Encontré mi viejo cuaderno y unos horribles dibujos de lo que supuse que eran flores dentro del papel polvoriento. Para intentar rescatar los buenos dibujos, que alguna vez fueron mejores, elegí mis flores favoritas e investigué brevemente su significado y una imagen de referencia. Luego, hice un dibujo de cada flor y escribí su significado al lado antes de repasarlo todo con bolígrafo negro. Las flores representadas son:

Lirios del valle

Lavanda

Aparentemente, el significado de estas flores ha cambiado mucho a lo largo de los años y, en contra de la moda del IB, no agregué citas a mi cuaderno debido a su apariencia repulsiva. Disfruté del boceto, pero no del dibujo lineal.

Experimenting with a style

This was my second landscape, but for this one, I explored adding blues and purple to a very green picture as a first try for a large canvas inspired by Monet's garden and style. It was very pleasing because I didn't spend much time thinking while painting and instead focused on using techniques I knew and exploring painting through feelings and appeal. Surprisingly, it was my most popular painting so far and also the most enjoyable. This leads me to believe that my paintings transmit my emotional space well. It is now snuggly placed in my mom's study room since she claimed it as soon as she saw it and I'm not particularly fond of keeping what I draw for I lose attachment to them quite quickly after they are done and can only appreciate them while in progress or in someone else's possession.

Experimentando con un nuevo estilo

Este fue mi segundo paisaje, pero para este, exploré la posibilidad de agregar azules y violetas a una imagen protagonizada por el verde como un primer intento para un lienzo grande inspirado en el jardín y el estilo de Monet. Fue muy agradable porque no pasé mucho tiempo pensando mientras pintaba y, en cambio, me concentré en usar técnicas que conocía y explorar la pintura a través de los sentimientos y el atractivo. Sorprendentemente, fue mi pintura más popular hasta ahora y también la más disfrutada. Esto me lleva a creer que mis pinturas transmiten bien mi espacio emocional. Ahora está cómodamente colocada en la sala de estudio de mi madre, ya que ella me la pidió tan pronto como la vio y no me interesa conservar lo pinto que porque pierdo el apego a ellos bastante rápido después de que están terminados y solo puedo apreciarlos mientras están en progreso o en posesión de otra persona.

Julius Ceasar at school

I've been waiting for an opportunity to paint a portrait. To focus on the shapes of the face, hues are essential, that's why I went for a black and white portrait that eliminates the intricacies of skin and all its colours since the face is made up of many different tones and tints. I was quite proud of how it turned out since I was trying something new. The first change was in the sketch which I made in green pen as opposed to pencil, this meant that erasing wasn't an option and (because my pen was running out of ink) I had to draw long lines. From there on it was a matter of getting the darkest shades in and gradually bringing out the lighter shades making sure to maintain balanced facial features. Furthermore, the portrait was of a recognised figure, meaning that it had to look a certain way and keep certain proportions so that it would be recognised. I was worried that the personality and heavy presence of the emperor would be lost. Luckily, the children were able to guess who it was! Once I was somewhat happy with the result I signed it and gifted it to a primary class in school whose homeroom teacher is an art lover. Jose Luis has been carefully curating an art gallery in his class and this is now my second contribution to it. Perhaps there will be more in the future.

Julio César en la escuela

He estado esperando una oportunidad para pintar un retrato. Para centrarnos en las formas del rostro, los tonos son fundamentales, por eso opté por un retrato en blanco y negro que elimina las complejidades de la piel y todos sus colores, ya que el rostro se compone de muchos tonos y tintes diferentes. Estaba bastante orgulloso de cómo resultó ya que estaba probando algo nuevo. El primer cambio fue en el boceto que hice con bolígrafo verde en lugar de lápiz, esto significó que borrar no era una opción y (porque mi bolígrafo se estaba quedando sin tinta) tuve que dibujar líneas largas. A partir de ahí, fue cuestión de incorporar los tonos más oscuros y resaltar gradualmente los tonos más claros, asegurándose de mantener los rasgos faciales equilibrados. Además, el retrato era de una figura reconocida, lo que significaba que tenía que verse de cierta manera y mantener ciertas proporciones para que fuera reconocido. Me preocupaba que se perdiera la personalidad y la fuerte presencia del emperador. ¡Afortunadamente los niños pudieron adivinar quién era! Una vez que estuve algo satisfecho con el resultado, lo firmé y se lo regalé a una clase de primaria en la escuela cuyo maestro es un amante del arte. José Luis ha estado curando cuidadosamente una galería de arte en su clase y esta es ahora mi segunda contribución. Quizás haya más en el futuro.

P.E (again)

We are still going hard on activities during CAS hour. For as long as I remember, I have sucked at football, each time I play football I fall. I don't understand how or why but it is a recurring event, however this time I didn't fall! Not only did I keep my balance throughout the whole 45 minute long match, I also touched the ball and stopped it while playing as a goalie, I was very proud. I know my contribution wasn't very relevant to the match but I did try and did something.

Educación física (otra vez)

Seguimos trabajando duro en las actividades durante la hora de CAS. Desde que tengo uso de razón, he sido pésima en el fútbol, cada vez que juego al fútbol, me caigo. No entiendo cómo ni por qué pero es un evento recurrente, pero esta vez no me caí! No sólo mantuve el equilibrio durante los 45 minutos del partido, sino que también toqué el balón y lo detuve mientras jugaba de portera, estaba muy orgullosa. Sé que mi contribución no fue muy relevante para el partido, pero lo intenté e hice algo. ;)

EP.4: Cultural microagresions w/ Katia

Related to black history month and linking it to our previous episode, we invited Katia to our podcast, an excellent addition thanks to her experience and street intelligence. She always answers questions with interesting and detailed points so it was a pleasure to have her over. I also got a chance to explore and explain my feelings regarding religious and cultural outfits as an arab muslim living in Spain. Thank you Katia for coming over, as a first interview it was great!

Relacionado con el mes de la historia negra y vinculándolo a nuestro episodio anterior, invitamos a Katia a nuestro podcast, una excelente incorporación gracias a su experiencia y cultura general. También tuve la oportunidad de explorar y explicar mis sentimientos con respecto a la vestimenta religiosa y cultural como árabe musulmán que vive en España. We still don't talk about Bruno...

While browsing lazily through my files a few days ago I came across a project Irene and I made for music class and thought it would be interesting to recreate it, so we did. We met up at my house and re-recorded all the scenes, keeping the original audio with our voices. Other than having a lot of fun with the acting, I genuinely believe we have improved our film-making, adding interesting and funny camera angles and props. In the original video, all the shots were still and in the same backgrounds with basic outfits, here the editing (thank you Irene) and acting as well as shots are more elaborated and engaging. We did what we could with what we had and most importantly, we bonded. I wonder if we could make this a yearly project...

Seguimos sin hablar sobre Bruno...

Mientras hojeaba perezosamente mis archivos hace unos días me encontré con un proyecto que Irene y yo hicimos para la clase de música y pensé que sería interesante recrearlo, así que lo hicimos. Nos reunimos en mi casa y volvimos a grabar todas las escenas manteniendo el audio original con nuestras voces. Además de divertirnos mucho con la actuación, realmente creo que hemos mejorado nuestra realización cinematográfica, agregando ángulos de cámara y accesorios interesantes y divertidos. En el vídeo original todas las tomas eran fijas y con los mismos fondos con vestimenta básica, aquí la edición (gracias Irene) y la actuación así como las tomas son más elaboradas y atractivas. Hicimos lo que pudimos con lo que teníamos y lo más importante, nos unimos. Me pregunto si podríamos hacer de este un proyecto anual...

Origami workshop

For the CAS fair, some of my friends and I organised a 1 hour workshop with kids from 4th of primary where we taught them how to craft several different shapes and artefacts with paper. As a child, I found origami extremely difficult so this was a learning experience for me too! i definitely enjoyed spending time with such enthusiastic and avid children and many of them surprised me with their excellent paper folding abilities. However, what surprised me most was the impact it had on my friends. I have caught several of them practicing origami whilst on their own. To be honest, I will admit it is quite addicting to get the hang of it. In the end, the kids learnt origami and my friends and I learned how to connect with our inner artist! :)

Para la feria CAS, algunos de mis amigos y yo organizamos un taller de 1 hora con niños de 4º de primaria donde les enseñamos a crear diferentes formas y artefactos con papel. Cuando era pequeña, el origami me resultaba extremadamente difícil, ¡así que esta fue una experiencia de aprendizaje para mí también! Definitivamente disfruté de pasar tiempo con niños tan entusiastas y ávidos y muchos de ellos me sorprendieron con sus excelentes habilidades para doblar papel. Sin embargo, lo que más me sorprendió fue el impacto que tuvo en mis amigos. He pillado a varios de ellos practicando origami por su cuenta. Para ser sincera, admito que es bastante adictivo una vez le coges el truco. ¡Al final, los niños aprendieron origami y mis amigos y yo aprendimos a conectar con nuestro artista interior! :)
