No, She-Ra is not saying that you should forgive your abusers or that having a sad backstory makes the abuse OK. it is saying that in the cycle of abuse there is a difference between Abusers and Abuse victims, with the latter becoming abusers because of the former and the enviroment in which they are able to abuse their power.

When you take the victims out of that enviroment, that's when they can heal and break out of the cycle. But when you take abusers out of it, they will try to reclaim their previous position of power.

When Scorpia and Catra where liberated from the enviroment that abused them, they began to heal and were able to change.

When the same thing happened to Shadow Weaver, she tried to asses her position once again and crawl once more into a position in which she controlled other people.

also been thinking recently about how many war crimes glimmer committed and almost-committed. specifically about the time she lowkey almost killed catra in cold blood, and only didn’t because bow was standing behind her giving her the ‘we’re the good guys! we can’t sink to their level!’ speech. how many times has he had to do that? how many face-heel turns would glimmer have already made if bow or her mother hadn’t been there to talk her down? this is what i mean by ‘glimmer without a support system is unhinged’. and sure enough! in season 4 her support system crumbles, her mother’s gone, bow and adora aren’t on/by her side like they always used to be, and what happens? nothing good! she’s doing the best she can and she’s making choices that seem like the only ones open to her at the time, but wow are they bad!

just. i love that as a facet of her character, i love the ways it deepens the parallels and reflections between her and catra (who never had a functional support system), and i love what a testament it is to the importance of those close to us. people aren’t meant to function alone! relationships are vital and necessary! glimmer is a mess without them in really obvious and destructive ways! bad choices we make aren’t only due to our badness as people, they’re fed by isolation and anger and fear! interconnectedness is a strength!
