Forever thinking about how much the scene with Raphael making soup shows about him and his life. He’s spent the day doing other people’s chores, finished and had dinner and got drunk with his friends and halfway home Maria’s mum asks him to make soup for them. And of course he does, but he doesn’t complain in the slightest, he doesn’t let Merrick help, he tells Maria’s mum to stop helping and ‘sit down and be ill properly’ and THEN he starts patiently teaching Maria how to cut vegetables! And he does this all day, every day since the age of TWELVE and was given absolutely no choice in his job, but the fact that he hasn’t had a proper rest in twenty-eight (perceived) years doesn’t stop him going out of his way to do more!! He might be a bitch in front of Clem and Martel (rightly) but he’s so unwaveringly kind to all of the townspeople all of the time and clearly loves them. I’m not sure he could physically take a holiday even if he wanted to.

Also I do love how he was all ‘you’ll have to look after yourselves here don’t expect anyone to do things for you’ to Clem and Merrick but then as soon as Clem leaves he starts trying to take care of Merrick so much,,,

im still not over mr raphael bedlamstacks and never will be. he learnt fluent english in less than a year and is out here using the words ‘phonemes’ and ‘ophthalmographical’ in elaborate insults. he performs baptisms in a language nobody else in the town understands so they can’t tell he’s being a sarcastic little bitch while doing them. he releases other people’s guinea pigs into the wild. he’s a catholic priest who doesn’t really believe in heaven. he gets paid in pineapples. he’s a beekeeper against his will. he’s killed people. when his crush saw him cry he avoided his own house for several days straight so he wouldn’t have to face him. he’s worked 20 hour days every day since the age of twelve. he pretends not to know where bolivia is to annoy people. he-
