Many people agree that Arthur giving Merlin his mother's sigil was a proposal, and that leads me to two conclusions:
They didn't even date first. Arthur either decided in the moment that if he were to die, he could think of no one better to take his place--and if he survives, they could marry (having feelings for a while or realizing them in that moment and going with it) or was like oh shit I love him gotta marry right away.
2. They DID date, Merlin just didn't realize it. This of course, begs the question of when Arthur thought that they started to date

Y’know that one scene in A Servant of Two Masters where Merlin tells Leon he’s off to kill the king and Leon just laughs
What if Merlin realises how much power that actually has and just starts telling Leon the truth instead of coming up with excuses
Like
Leon: Hey Merlin, where are you off to?
Merlin: Just going to fight a gryphon!
Leon: ha! Have fun!
Or
Leon: Merlin, why do you have highly illegal poison?
Merlin: it’s only poison mixed with alcohol, otherwise it’s just great sidhe repellent!
Leon, chuckling fondly: Alright, as you were then.
Or
Leon: Merlin! Where were you?
Merlin: nowhere interesting, just practicing sorcery.
And Leon believes he’s just keeping the gag going every time.
Which also makes the poetry scene so much better because Leon is used to Merlin being funny, never giving proper excuses and joking about high treason crimes.
So when Merlin is so flustered that he blurts out poetry, the only possible explanation can be that something Merthur is happening and Leon wants no part in it.
It also got me thinking about post Camlan when Merlin and Arthur get back to Camelot (I’m in denial, shut up) when Leon finds out Merlin has magic.
He waits at the gates for Merlin with his arms folded looking like a disappointed mother, then Merlin stops and realises every one of his “excuses” came back to bite him in the arse.
Until Leon has to explain to Arthur that he’s known Merlin is a sorcerer for a while now, but always thought it was a joke because “it’s Merlin”
Merlin: in my defence, I never lied.
Leon: you confessed to multiple crimes!
Merlin: you let me get away with them!
Arthur: huh?
Leon: Sire, I can explain.
Merlin: can you?
Leon: can you?!
I’m tempted to turn this into a fanfic if anyone would want to read it

You know, Kilgharrah never contacts me to say, ‘Hey let’s have fun!’ It’s always ‘Hey, how would you like to go and get yourself killed?’

Arthur: do you think Merlin will ever forgive me?
Gwen: what for?
Arthur: for legalizing magic? It's always been a tough topic for him.
Gwen: ... Why don't you ask him?
Arthur: but he doesn't know about it yet
Gwen: oh, my dear king. Catch him when he faints, will you?

merlin wing fic where merlin keeps his wings bound under his clothes (similar to chest binding) and of course he takes them off to sleep but they don’t get proper stretching often enough so every once in a while he goes into the forest at night to fly (more often when he’s been stressed)
arthur notices merlin’s been extra shifty recently so one night he follows him into the woods and sees merlin stop in the middle of a clearing (or maybe at the shore of avalon). he waits behind a tree to watch what merlin’s doing and who he might be meeting. only to see merlin discard his neckerchief and tunic, he sees the bandages and assumes merlin’s injured and gets up to confront merlin but before he’s made it out of his hiding spot, merlin’s dropped the bandages and stretched to his full wingspan, stands for a second to ruffle his feathers then shoots straight into the air.
arthur watches in awe as merlin spins through the air, the moonlight glinting off merlin’s angelic wings
merlin twists and turns, feeling better every second he spends in the sky
when merlin has slowed down to fly leisurely circles, he spots arthur (maybe he freezes, maybe he loses balance for a second and stumbles mid-air, maybe he flies out of sight for a moment to think)
he flies down to meet arthur (i imagine him landing kinda like kilgharrah, just hotter and more majestic) (like swooping down and righting himself at the last second and his wings kinda bouncing a little)
he doesn’t immediately start apologizing or anything, just makes eye contact with arthur and waiting
arthur’s just shookened cause ohmygodmerlincanflyandmerlinhaswingsandohmygodmerlinisshirtlessandmerlinlookslikeanangel
after that idk, go with the flow but preferably merthur
n merlin’s wings r stereotypical white feather angel wings (maybe like tom ellis’ in lucifer)

I just know that the knights have a weekly meeting consisting of “so what the hell is Merlin’s actual job here” because they understand he’s a manservant, but they’ve never before seen a manservant offer the king advice, travel on hunts, come along on fights, and write speeches. There’s literally no other manservants that come along with them on hunts, it’s legit just Merlin so clearly this is not in the job description (and it’s never anyone else, if Merlin is say doing things for Gaius because he’s also the physician’s apprentice). Percival is the one to start it, tentatively asking one day after Merlin came on a hunt and spent a decent chunk of it critiquing the king’s speech before saying he’d write another one for the king to look at and Arthur just nodded “Look, I’m sorry, but I’m knew here and I’ve gotta ask: what are Merlin’s actual jobs here? Why is he writing speeches?” One of the older knights heaves a sigh and says, “Welcome to Camelot, here’s one of our core rules: Merlin’s jobs are whatever the hell he says they are. If he says he needs to inspect the armor, let him. If he says he’s gotta go help heal some person, let him. If he’s roaming around the castle in the middle of the night, pretend you see nothing.” Leon pulls out a paper that is titled “Things Merlin has done that either he and/or Arthur claims are in his job description” and includes, but is not limited to, writing speeches, supervising other servants at feasts, tagging along with Arthur on quests (with an asterisk saying no, you may not bring your own servant with you, this is a Merlin thing and a Merlin thing only), being doctor on quests, and telling knights what they can and cannot do against magical creatures and occasionally bandits
The (Un)Official Meeting of the Round Table.
They keep tabs on other nobles. They discuss trading shifts. They talk about their respective squires. They keep track of the "It Has Been [X] Days Since Our Last Disaster" board. And they take notice of "what weird thing Merlin has done this week". They call it bird watching.

Sorcerer: Now, I will possess what none of you will ever have! Arthur: A mother? Leon: A normal job? Lancelot: Love? Elyan: A break? Gwaine: Sobriety? Percival: Chainmail with sleeves? Sorcerer: Merlin: Don't look at me. I'll spend an eternity listing things.

Merlin: I make a pretty awesome damsel if I do say so myself :D
Arthur two seconds away from going insane: for the love of- STOP GETTING KIDNAPPED! YOU HAVE MAGIC!!! USE IT!!
Merlin winking: but then you wouldn’t be my personal knight in shining armor anymore.
The knights slowly backing away in the background cause they don’t want to see their “parents” fight.
Sir "Today I Will Cause Problems On Purpose" Gwaine: Well, sire, if you don't want to do it, I'll gladly -
Arthur: Hey, hey, hey, let's not get carried away here.
Merlin: ;)

i need a fic of merlin pranking arthur and the knights by mentally speaking to them with his magic, making them think that they're crazy, and getting them to do a bunch of ridiculous stuff to get rid of the ominous voice of "the great emrys".
oh, the chaos.

So i'm thinking-
Merlin is basically a show about everyone falling in love, adopting or trying to kill a scrawny pale clumsy boy who can change the weather at will
