Political Systems Lesson. (2012)
I was Helping out at an English Language Corner once a week for a great friend. We were always practicing discussing different topics. The topic of the day was News around the World. The topic evolved from speaking in English about recent news and opinions about current events, and Occupy Wallstreet came up.. As well as grievances regarding the Communist Government.
Student "One part of me thinks they are lucky, because they have the option to sit on the street and not work, to speak out. That is not lazy, but lucky that a government would except that behavior."
Me, shocked at the honesty in his answer. "I think we can turn this into an activity. Let's all pretend that we are in a Country where we can speak out against anything we might want to change in this society. What would you stand up for, and how would you do it?"
I looked around the room, as everyone was dead silent. I wondered what had happened to my eager to participate group.
The earlier conversation was regarding many greviences the population has about the Country growing too fast and not taking good care of the entirety of its citizens. Some felt left behind, even though I was speaking to a group of some of the smartest young computer minds. Our conversation got especially touchy when discussing the one-child policy. One Student in particular had a heartbreaking story to share about forced abortion. Nobody even winced, because it was so common.
I refraised the question. "We are going to pretend we live in a Democratic Society, and we have the right to vote for our leaders and laws. Which laws would you change? More importantly, which laws would you like to stand up against?"
One student then looked at me sternly and said, "But we don't. To speak as if we did, would be suicide."
