i'd put trevor on the penguins because the narrative of all the separate parts of my flyers ships being close to other separate parts of my flyers ships would be so pleasing to me personally. trevor playing with jeff in pittsburgh, jamie playing with travis in philadelphia, and nolan and mike both unofficially retired in the canadian prairies, less than two hours away from each other. i haven't forgotten that one reddit user who wrote richards finds his way to winnipeg every month or so or the tidbit about how pat used to train in kenora where his uncle has a cabin. it would immediately inspire the masses to write a bunch of thirty thousand word fics about hooking up with your new buddy friend who reminds you of when you were much, much younger and the world was your oyster and your teammate was more like a soulmate and how those two things often felt like the same thing anyway. and if you call each other by the wrong name during it, well, no hard feelings because you both get it.

I think something that is so intrinsic to the queer experience is staying up all night, reading or watching a gay love story on your phone, holding back sobs. Knowing that you could have this one day, that you could be this happy one day. But for now, you have the same four scraps of hope. And while they can be badly written, or unrealistic, and sometimes not even meant for queer eyes; they are yours. And for the night you can hold this hope in your hands and pretend that you are entitled to your own love story, outside of the screen. And you don’t have to be so afraid until the morning comes.
