At the beginning of the month I moved to Valparaíso. I visited this city some time ago when I first arrived to Chile and I fell in love with it. Since I’ll be leaving Chile in May I wanted to live in this city before going home. It’s been a month now and I love living here. The people and the culture are so different from Santiago. Also, having this vue of the Pacific Ocean so close to me is truly amazing.

One Year in Santiago!

So ...

Let’s have an update.

 I moved to Chile on July 7th 2018, last year almost. I’m a bit premature with calling it a year, but it’s close enough. When I arrived, I had no idea what to expect and truly wasn’t ready for it. But I had the mentality to not get stressed and worry to much. I went with the flow and just did my best. I found myself in some dicey situations, to say the least, but I’ve so far managed to find my way out of them. I’ve met and lost contact with a lot of people, for various reasons. I’ve visited some very beautiful places and saw things I always dreamed about. I’ve made friendships that I hope will last a last time. I’ve eaten some good and bad food. I’ve been lost and I’ve been found. 

When I arrived, I truly was a different person. To the degree that I don’t recognize the person I was before. I don’t understand how he was so lonely and sad all the time. Maybe because I didn’t believe this would come true. But it has, and I’m a changed man for it. I can’t say for better or for worse, that’s for you to decide. I can say that I am stronger, so much stronger. I can’t say I’m smarter, possibly dumber that before, but I have a belief and strength in myself that even in my best moments in the states I didn’t have. 

Moving forward, I hope to further improve who I am. Possibly, learn to save money and further prepare myself for the future. I plan to stay in Chile for another year. I’m not sure why, but I’m not ready to leave yet, spiritually and financially. I hope to do some more traveling here and spend more time with the friends I’ve made. After that, I will move to Rio de Janeiro and teach for a year. And after that, my plan is to move to Paris and find something more permanent there. I hope I can visit more of my family in Europe there and use my French to further my education career teaching English. 

Anything could change, but a year in ... this is the plan!

Life is a roller coaster of emotions and events that all together create some kind of meaningful experience for all of us. I’m not sure what makes you happy or what you find important in life, but for me, it’s this. This photo captures something that when I die, I’ll remember. I’ll think back to this day and remember that I lived my dreams. 

I’ve had the opportunity to find and learn so much more about myself over the past year. I remember this time last year, being so anxious about this move and how my life was about to change. Now, a year into this journey, I find myself lying in bed, editing a picture I took earlier today of the sunset over San Cristobal Hill. And it’s in these moments where I find that I still can’t believe what I’ve done.
