University started up again about 5 weeks ago, so that’s been keeping me busy :) plus, I have decided to get at least 7 hours of sleep this semester, taking away from potential Tumblr time, hahaha. Oh goodness, so Tonia, are our Masche prayers going to be answered this season??! AAAAAAAAAHHHH
Anyhow, I really hope you are happy, healthy, and that studies are treating you well :) I’m off to bed, but I’ll definitely catch you soon *BIG VIRTUAL BLAUGRANA HUG*

He reminds us why we love football. The beautiful first touch, the fake shot, the chaos unleashed onto a defense, the nutmeg, the selfless acts, control, acceleration, intelligence, and forethought. He gives us the joy of football.

What's your opinion on Luis Suarez? Do you hate him? Do you like him? Unsure? I'm one of those people who don't necessarily hate him. I hate what he did and what he said. But I'm not a person that finds a person irredeemable. Like can't someone learn from their mistakes? I know he hasn't apologized. But I don't know... What he did was disgusting! But I don't think he's a horrible person. All I'm trying to say is Tumblr is so quick to hate someone and not give them a chance? Thoughts?
Firstly, I’d like to refer you to an article by my favorite Barça writer Kevin Williams, Luis Suarez and the Act of Forgiveness. It’s a subjective piece, so take what you want from it.
Secondly, my answer isn’t going to be very concise, so bare with me. When Suárez first came to Barça, it was off the cusp of his world cup fiasco and of course just knowing his history with racist charges, I was not happy about him coming to Barça. The dominant thought was that he wasn’t in line with our philosophy as a club. What Suárez needed was discipline. He needed to be surrounded by good people who would take the time to help him, Leo and Masche. He needed to be surrounded by people who would call him out on his misbehavior, Geri and Dani. He needed Lucho’s no-nonsense approach. He needed Barça more than Barça needed him (at least, that’s how I see it). It wasn’t an over night transformation, but from where I stand, he has come a long way. I believe people can change, and that is something I have noticed the Tumblr community to question constantly in many areas, outside the football fandom too. As you said, Tumblr does tend to hate people very quickly (in my experience) but forgiveness seems to be rare.
With the biting…I don’t personally see biting as worse or better than kicking or punching. I think they are all bad and if you watch football it is clear that Suárez isn’t the only offender. He has seen a psychologist (or psychiatrist, I can’t remember) and he hasn’t bitten anybody since coming to Barça, so I’m accepting that he has changed until I’ve been given evidence to the contrary. Any player who bites, kicks, or punches needs to be reprimanded. The end.
As for the racist charge, look I can’t go talk to Suárez. I can’t ask him what he said or why he said it. I can’t hang out with him and find out if it was from a place of ignorance or actual, deep seeded racism. I have no capacity to tell you whether or not he is a racist. The issue is that on Tumblr, Twitter, and Facebook we try to educate people about racism, we call people out on racism, we provide videos and diagrams outlining what is racist and what is not racist (which is amazing and hopefully going to change the world in the long-run), yet we are unable to accept that people who are racist can change by using the resources and environment that we have provided. We say “STOP BEING RACIST!!!!!!!!” and when someone does stop being racist we go “NOOOO GTFO YOU RACIST”….so, what? Our efforts are futile? There is no logic or rational for that. Yes, there are people who are racist and will remain that way. But if you are telling me that people can’t change and learn, then I have to disagree. I have been called parsik, ayotollah, terrorist, and have been unduly sequestered in airports. These are racist terms and acts, but I educate those around me. Yeah, some don’t change, but some do. Some learn. This was a tangent, but hopefully it gives you an idea of where I’m coming from in terms of how I face racism and racists.
In terms of Suárez, all I know is that the person who I look up to, Lionel Messi, is friends with this person. The person I have been following for pretty much a decade, is close friends with Suárez. That my hero hangs out with this person out of choice, not just because it’s part of his job. That Leo and Suárez’s kids hang out. So, for me, I’m trusting Leo’s judgment.
I have forgiven Suárez and moved on. I do not hate Suárez. I enjoy his football immensely. I think he is indispensable to Barça at the moment and I cheer for him during games.
In saying all that, if someone doesn’t accept Suárez because of the racist charges, I am not going to tell them they are wrong to do so, because they are not. There is no right or wrong. I have decided to judge for myself along the way.

“I’m sorry Leo. Thank you so much! ☝🏼️🇦🇷⚽️”
Nicolas Vazquez’s (Argentine actor) open Letter to Lionel Messi
“I’m thinking about how the boys are doing, but especially how Leo is doing, not the best player in the world, not the #1, not the distinguished one, not the Messiah, not the god, but Leo Messi, the human being, because even though they forget it, and it’s because of him that they do, because they got used to the many things he has achieved; he is indeed human.
No one more wanted this Copa more than him, and the one before, and the other one. No one cried more than he did for not winning them, and he’ll always ask himself: why? I don’t think there is an answer.
Now, how can some Argentines, instead of helping him get up,embracing him, they attack him? Those successful ones who are talking with all certainty, what have they won? And if they had won something, who are they to judge and give their opinions so lightly? They are people who only value a player when he wins a cup? And when it’s not the case, they degrade him? A lot happens in sports. Clearly that could be why they hide in the shadows when one wins something but when he gets knocked down, they come out and attack.
I am thankful that you don’t always win Leo Messi, because this way I can tell my nephews that a draw or a loss exists. And they happen to you as well. That you don’t wear a cape, and you are not a super hero. That you cry, and tears fall off your face just like us, that you worry just like any of us and you too need a comforting hug. That tomorrow, you will get back up again and go back to winning, Because that’s life. If only they can understand and value it, maybe the would appreciate you more. Luckily, not all Argentines think like that. They exist, they do. But they are a minority. They are the ones who criticize and teach things they have never played from the couch at their homes, from their homes they are winners though. They only expect you to save them. Or to put it in better words, they expect to let off steams of their frustrations on someone like you.
What ego, what confidence they have to talk about a winner like you that way. And then there’s you Leo, with your calm gaze, your humility and your usual posture. You are not the bad one here. They are.
As a society, we should start to evolve and change once and for all.
How crazy of them not seeing the real you, not taking care of you,not enjoying you. Forgive them, they know not what they are doing! If they are not able to enjoy you, you the magical one, I don’t even want to imagine how they are in their daily lives.
I choose to enjoy you and take care of you.
Thank you for giving me the chills every time you dribble a ball, every time you score a goal or make others score hundreds of them. Thank you for taking the Argentine flag to such heights. And I’m not talking about football only, because you already do that, they should invent new records for you to enjoy because you have beaten all the current ones! I am talking about representing us as person, as an ambassador. You are wholesome, humble, magical, despite being the best! And you are not a machine, you are a human being.
For once, think about yourself, what your heart tells you do. Which is taking care of yourself. For once, no one is pressuring you, or bothering you in this moment.
With a heavy chest, after having cried with you, I tell you: I am here and I will accompany and embrace you!
I love you Leo!
Nicolas Vazquez”

How many times did Anto hold a crying Leo in his arms? How many times she had to comfort him, watching the man she loves so devastated and in pain? Poor girl. It must be hard for her, too.
Yes, it must be very hard on her as well. I honestly can’t even imagine what the Messi-Roccuzzo-Cuccittini family is feeling right now. I sincerely wish I could just take their pain for myself.

He donned the Albiceleste when necessary and wore it with pride, that sweat-soaked symbol of a man working to make liars of those who said that his heart wasn’t really in it, that he wasn’t truly and fully Argentine. Match after match, playing hurt, playing surrounded by incompetence and indifference, playing this thing he loved that even when the vertical stripes changed colors and became a heavy, heavy burden.
Messi is clutch. Messi is the greatest player in the game. We can’t even say that he is past it, since he unveiled a new player this season, re-emerging in a new, just as devastating form. Yet today, Messi is a player who, just maybe, made a difficult decision for no reason other than self-preservation, not physical but psychological.
When he missed than penalty shot, he was pale. While the teammates stood together, Messi stood apart, destroyed. A man who had done so much, scored absurd goals from absurd angles, couldn’t even put a ball into a huge net from a hop, skip and jump away. He wept, he sat, disconsolate, in a corner of the bench. He didn’t want to hide, but desperately wanted to be alone. He will believe that he failed his teammates. He will tell Higuain that his miss was part of the game even as he fails to forgive himself for that penalty miss. Many of us have watched Messi for his entire career, and have never seen him as devastated as he was during the Copa final. If you weren’t moved, you don’t have a heart.
[...] Messi’s own country ripped and tore at him, suggesting that he really wasn’t one of them, believing the lie that Maradona won a World Cup all by himself and holding Messi to an impossible standard.
[...] At some point, everyone has enough, and says enough. The wreck that couldn’t watch the penalty shootout, that looked like a ghost during the trophy celebrations, is absolutely right to say, at long last, “Enough.” We can only speculate, because only Messi knows why he took the decision that he did. But maybe it isn’t a question of time, or player life span. Maybe it’s a question of anguish, and the toll it takes on someone who just wants to do a thing that they love in a state of grace rather than pain. And that’s okay. [written by Kevin Williams]

What I hate the most is that I know Messi will blame himself. Not just today, not just tomorrow, not just every time he wears the Argentina jersey, but in ten years or twenty years when he thinks of his career. When he thinks about what he has not achieved for his country, for his people, for his home. No amount of individual awards will be enough, because football itself and the national team, particularly, are beyond his ego. This isn’t just my speculation, it is from his own words. Four lost finals will be the crux of what he sees. That pains me, because honestly, he does not deserve that. He deserves more. Nonetheless, I know he will keep fighting and keep pushing forward. Come Moscow, I’m praying and rooting for the most glorious, unexpected miracle. Until then, thank you Messi, for every single ounce of unconditional love and hard work that you have given this team. Thank you Messi, for being one of our fiercest leaders. Thank you Messi, for never giving up on your teammates or your country. Thank you Messi, for being inmessionante.
