Before COVID shut the library down, I was helping a little boy and his mom find books.
“What do you like to read about?” I asked. “Dinosaurs!” This is common request, but can mean different things, “Okay. Do you want a story about dinosaurs, or facts about dinosaurs?” “Facts.” I took him to the dinosaur section (567.9) of the juvenile nonfiction. He picked out a couple books, and I asked him if there was anything else he was looking for. “Do you have anything on DNA?” I had to think about that for a second. “I think so…but I’ll have to look it up.” The boy beamed, “I want to find out how DNA works, so I can bring them back!” “We just saw Jurassic Park,” his mom explained with a smile that did not waver when she added, “We didn’t learn anything.”

‘What is, is what must be’
“There is not a day or night but a doe offers her life for her kittens, or some honest captain of Owsla his life for his Chief Rabbit’s. Sometimes it is taken, sometimes it is not. But there is no bargain, for here, what is, is what must be.”

- Jake, I cannot believe you’re gonna lose Nana’s apartment. We grew up together. We used to hang out there every day after school.

you know the other thing that I really enjoy about Good Omens? Despite being messy af and bad at talking about their feelings and using their words, Crowley and Aziraphale are just like… actual grown-ups. Like, their defining character traits are that that they would risk literally everything to avoid a change in their daily routine. They literally defy Heaven and face down Satan to stop the Apocalypse because after a long day they just want to unwind at home with their significant other and a nice glass of red. Like they are SO decidedly middle-aged that actual paradise to these two immortal beings of immense otherworldly power is an early dinner out with your sweetie at your favorite restaurant and then going DIRECTLY home to open a bottle of wine and throw on your favorite album. and honestly, hard same?

that story where you challenge the fairy queen to a match of wit and skill to win back your loved one. and it goes … fine, you think? probably.
adapted from this very short Elsewhere University piece, changed slightly to be a little more self-contained.

Andrews and Plummer sat next to each other at the center of the long table, their backs to the room. When they spoke, they leaned close to each other, their heads almost touching.
Gradually, people at other tables started noticing them, shifting forward to see if they could believe their eyes. After all, the last time most of us saw the two of them together, they were climbing over that mountain to freedom.
And 50 years later, damn if they weren’t right here. Safe. And still a family. - Vanity Fair, The Sound of Music’s 50th Anniversary

Good Omens resonated with so many because it gave us the biggest romantic fantasy of all times: someone loving us despite witnessing 6000 years of our bullshit.

ohhhhh Curse of Chalion is my go-to comfort read, as grim as it can get it's just "extremely traumatized man does his damnedest to die the noble death he thinks he deserves, and over and over people are kinder to him than he could ever have imagined" also it's a way more interesting take on religion than 95% of cookie-cutter fantasy pantheons
it sits on a very important shelf of favorites called “deeply boring people fumble their way through a Very Exciting Time”, I love it.
