Hey so ! This has its roots in a thing called Dualism, which is where some stuffy rich white men of yore all nodded their heads together when one proposed that the mind and body were separate things! This speculation- which shouldn’t have passed the sniff test to anyone who has ever had any sort of body aches from being in emotional pain, or felt heaviness or any other sensation when profoundly sad- upended lots of indigenous and other traditions and notions of nourishing the body via the spirit (or vice versa! say hi to qi gong and yoga) leads me to believe that either (a) these men, being privileged in the era at the height of colonialism, experienced so little emotional pain that they were easily able to construct this fantasy or (b) might’ve been alexithymic (which does co-occur with autism a lot, but can also arise when you’re raised in an environment that disconnects you from your own emotions … such as the ‘stiff upper lip’ attitudes of the British, or the blitzkrieg of overwhelming information volume we see in the modern world, which is discussed by Dr. Alok Kanojia’s YT video on the subject). For these men, this would be the brand where you simply don’t feel much emotion (ie not the subtype where you feel strongly but can’t pinpoint what the feeling is)

This fantasy made up by the field of philosophy has done untold reinforcing-damage to peoples’ health amidst implicit ‘stiff upper lip’ cultural inheritance, that we are only just barely beginning to correct with investigations into the science evidence, such as Mind Over Medicine, by Lissa Rankin.

(The main man in question, to whom this fantasy was attributed to, also claimed dogs were automatons and, subsequently, experimenting on them invasively and painfully was viewed as morally neutral. This idea has leaked out to the general populous such that things like factory farms are just shrugged at. Animals aren’t ‘that conscious’ after all, says general attitudes which are out of touch with animal cognition studies.)

To be an equal opportunist with gender here, I think that some white feminists who said stuff like ‘a woman needs a man the way a fish needs a bicycle’ also might’ve been missing an incredibly common emotional experience, ie, they were aromantic spec to begin with.

i think too many people operate under the assumption that emotions are some frivilous fantasy of the mind and have no impact on the physical world, which is a cute thought when Humans are an animal that can die from being kinda stressed out

Lotta confusion as to "why are the granola save the whales hippies right wing conspiracy theorists now?" And I think the answer is twofold:

Any social movement in the anglosphere is gonna have a certain amount of reactionaries who happen to be temporarily aimed at a good cause. A lot of them were always low-key right wing.

When you have no ability for class analysis, it is a very short idealogical step from "distrust of pharmaceutical companies" to "distrust of modern medicine as a whole" to "judeo-bolsheviks are poisoning white babies for profit"

This trend will continue until people have access to non-predatory healthcare. Conspiracism thrives when people are failed by the systems they rely on.
