I tried a few different methods of trying to get this hair texture down, it was very challenging and time consuming. Most of the "realistic" hair tutorials I find are in traditional media, so I have to try and translate those lessons to digital. It's definitely something I need to practice more but it was a ton of fun to try, I kinda love interesting hair styles. I will find a way! The Halloween decorations are out at work and my body is ready! The focus this week was simplification. I used reference pictures and tried to break them down hoping to find a balance of detail and simplicity that I like. In the left picture I added the witch hat, I think it looks cool but it's a little floaty. In the right picture I changed the hairstyle. In the bottom picture I used a reference to find the placement of the facial features and then got rid of the reference and drew the actual features from memory. Getting more comfortable with hatching I might try airbrushing next or some combination of the two. Sometimes I catch myself making the mistake of expecting more from myself then I should. I'm proud of my improvement but then I start trying to one up myself or I start to feel like if I can't maintain that same level of quality it must have been an accidental success, and I haven't actaully improved at all. I forget that the point is to learn, not to hit an imaginary target every single time. I spent all week feeling like this was gonna be another disappointing piece only to get to the end and find out I like it a lot.
