Reflective Essay
Discuss your work on the module in relation to professional practice and your current employment aspirations.
For this self-reflective essay, I found it useful to recap notes from previous modules. It made me realise how my skills and interests in animation have evolved. I have been required not only to apply my knowledge gathered across the three years but also to learn yet more skills and continue experimenting. It made me appreciate how much more I need to do to improve my skills as an animator.
Tackling a ‘brief’ in the final year was a new experience which proved worthwhile as there was an expectation to create a polished animated piece of work within set parameters and a time frame for a potential employer. I learnt many lessons:
I can develop an idea, create a moodboard, storyboard, animatics and undertake modelling elements quickly and confidently.
In terms of professional skills, background research is vital, to be familiar with branding, logos, style, and colour, have awareness of past creations, and awareness of current and past cultural capital so that the final creation complements a company’s trademark, is relatable and interests its target audience.
I can communicate effectively through PowerPoint slides, keep an organised blog, discuss plans, gain feedback as well as produce a presentation about the project.
The production process has been challenging as I struggled over the last few months of the course.
In the second year, it was very rewarding to work with or alongside another student on projects in the studio, where thought-provoking ideas were exchanged, short cuts learnt and a sense of camaraderie, which provided motivation to keep up productivity and problem solving.
This final year, working alone in an often-empty studio or in accommodation was de-motivating and made resolving technical problems in the project tougher. I was over ambitious about the length of time it would take me to learn new software in my final project. A more analytical approach is needed about the techniques required and better designed storyboards where bridges between scenes are outlined. Considerable time would have to be realistically set aside for experimentation and development of new skills in a future project.
My strengths lie in 3D animation. If I continue; modelling, sculpturing and creating background scenes would be the area that interests me, particularly if the work involves deaf characters in movies or in TV. I recently achieved my Level 1 Sign Language Certificate and intend to continue being proficient in sign language. I received blanket emails from Northumbria Careers Service on future careers to discuss in person but this setup has accessibility/communication issues in my case. I am thinking of contacting three groups/individuals:
Signing Animation/California (asked for my showreel last year),
Martin Glover, a deaf visual artist who won the Lumiere 2023 commission for any volunteer opportunities,
FLM (Flashing Lights Media) who recently advertised 6th June workshop for 10 deaf people who want to learn what a TV runner involves and possibility to apply for a job just to explore what is out there.

Part 2
Drones’ speed changes the tone of the animation. I may either decide to remove the drones completely or slow down their speed. I added them with the thought they would occupy the ‘space’ between sky and cloud but now I am not sure they are necessary.

I was not able to access IMAX font for some reason so will use another font for presenting the overview and explanations of the animation.

(no sound)
Consideration given to adding captions throughout the animation
Lift off with IMAX       with...        (black screen)
stellar SOUND QUALITY             (during the blue whirly rings)
stunning CONTRASTS                (white star contrasts with black gate)
startling SHARPNESS                 (jellyfish or water surface detail)
stronger COLOURS                    (pillars of creation in space)
expanded SCREEN SIZE            (screen in space enlarges-no time)
vivid BRIGHTNESS                     (sparkling star at the end)
Be UPLIFTED with......................(IMAX letters are revealed)
Thoughts:
I decided in the end it would prove distracting so captions were not included

Different background music, slower but again quite distinctive. Still unsure.

Music Sourced from FMA
Theme X by Steve Combs and Delta Is
https://freemusicarchive.org/music/Steve_Combs__Delta_Is/Themes_Vol_1/Delta_Is_-_Themes_Vol_1_-_13_Theme_X/
Spent a lot of time looking at music to fit the showreel from FMA and Freesound. Still unsure what sounds would suit. This is quite fast music with a distinctive beat.

Week 17: Further Experiments with Jellyfish
Jellyfish on a lighter aqua blue background look white.
I am now considering adding both neon blue jellyfish and white jellyfish but it may be tricky with the lighting and changing gradient of the blue background
Not happy with the camera movement backwards at the same time as the elevator ascends. I wanted the jellyfish to look like they are going down but they look stationary because of the camera movement. It makes it harder to appreciate the upward movement. Time constraints may mean I am unable to fix this.

Week 17. More Modelling
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thoughts:
When the clips were starting to come together, I noticed that the section between the bottom of the sea and between the sea’s surface may appear monotonous with nothing to see as the elevator ascends except the movement of the horizontal bars whizzing past. As a result, I am adding jellyfish for this section.
A similar situation occurred during the sky journey so considering the addition of drones. I will experiment and see how they look.
