Postcard Reflection 04/29/2020
This project was definitely new ground for me. I’ve designed for other groups (like outside of class) before, but I hadn’t really designed for this specific age group. Designing for the planetarium is close, as it’s usually trying to advertise to all age groups, but anything more specific had only been for people around my age, so this was a great opportunity to learn how to go about that. My design instincts are (for the time being) always to design something I would want to see, but in this case, it wouldn’t apply in the same way. The main way I went about this was thinking about what I see in my grandma's house. She's 82, so she’d fit well within this group. One thing I remember seeing in her house, and in her mom’s when I was really little was paper cut art in frames. My grandma had her own but she inherited the ones from my great-grandma after she died. I ran with this paper cut idea.
Initially I physically made the paper cuts to photograph, but my camera quality wasn’t great, and my scanner is worse off, so I decided to pull in the images and create vector art from the physical work I did. This was beneficial as it allowed me to make more edits to my initial work, but I still wish in some capacity that the photographs could’ve worked out. I went with Basic Sans for my type. I have pretty bad eyes, so I worked to find fonts I could see without my glasses on, and this was the prettiest of those options. I double checked this by sending it to my grandma to read, and she approved it. I wanted my cards to all be thematic, so they looked like they came from the same designer, not because it was required, but because it was a good opportunity to practice. I’m happy with my designs overall, but I could honestly spend forever making tiny adjustments.

camera quality was doing me dirty, so I worked with creating entirely digital cards. They are also to postal guidelines now. 04/15/2020

Reading Write Ups 04/08/2020

It’s about Legibility
Allen Haley
Focus on legibility and readability is key. You have to be sure to use something that is easily distinguishable between characters as much as it is capable of easily being understood as words. Type that is accessible needs to be distinctive without being overtly ornate, bold enough and big enough to see but also not so big its unreadable, and placed in spaces that aren’t so busy that they impede your ability to read.

Emily Gosling
This was a call out to action for designers to take a more serious interest in accessible design, citing Dyslexia, Neuro-differences, and vision impairment. It also took a look at variable font accessibility for less common languages. It spoke about feminist fonts, shining a light on the inequality of the sexes in design, and how that can be remedied. Then we took a look at several braidings and rebranding that showed these principles.

Margaret Andersen
This article took a look at universal design. It addressed how designing for outliers should be standard, as it can be used by everyone between those extremes, but is inclusive to a greater audience. It also addressed the reality that as we age, everyone will encounter some form of a impairment, whether that’s vision, auditory, mobility, etc. everyone will eventually face a roadblock, so only designing for groups that are youthful enough or lucky enough isn’t sustainable. It also addressed becoming complacent when solutions are functional enough, citing wheelchair ramps. They work, but they are not a finished design without room for improvement.

Sandy Peckinpah
This writing was a good motivational piece. It supported experimentation, reflection, and creativity. It was very much a self-help style of article, meant to refuel passion and encourage you to step outside of your comfort zone in both ideation and creation.
