Week 8 implemention
Tumblr media
In my client project, I provided recommendations to improve their social media presence in addition to their website. My client is a small business with their social media presence being around 500 followers. This are ok numbers but they could be better. I see this being the biggest problem as this isn’t the owners only profession. Meaning, its a one woman show who has to run everything. In the past she has gone to local conventions which I’m sure has helped. However relying on what is currently being done is not a sustainable practice for social media. In order to fix this issue, Mixon’s Gift Shop would need to produce ads on various social media stories mainly instagram and tiktok. In addition, posting reels/tik tok videos nearly daily has been said to be in favor of the algorithm so doing so is what is needed. If successfully followed Mixons can not only find themselves known on various social media but it would help expose them to new customers.

Hi Kaylyn
I agree that there should be a strategy to posting your content. You should promote your products but each time should be in a new way where those who are interacting with the page don’t feel like theyre seeing the same content.
I also agree with this. Not only should the content have goals for the company but for the customer as well. You want your customer to see your product and decide that you are who they want to spend their money with.
Week 7
To develop and share effective content, you need to create a content strategy. A content strategy is a way to coordinate, create, and distribute the content you post. This is a way to ensure that all content has value and in return will build long term relationships with your audience and result in an increase in revenue. Without one it can lead to your content feeling unbalanced or it has no purpose. When creating a content strategy, businesses decide the type of content they share and a content sharing strategy that outlines how and when it should be shared. The best way for a business to create an effective content strategy is to find the perfect balance between reflecting the unique perspectives of your brand and the needs of your organization. An example of effective content sharing is 1212 Gateway’s Instagram which really embodies what the brand is all about by posting content of the products in a bright and esthetically pleasing way.
Tumblr media
When launching a social organization, it is key to know the principles of effective content development and sharing. To be successful, they must be educated on the different techniques that come with building online communities to attract their desired audiences. They must know how to share content in a way that will reach your audiences interest, goals, and pain points. This can ensure that your content properly reflects what the business is all about.

Hi Kara,
I completely agree with what you wrote for your first response. I feel if a company doesn’t care to do a good job then it shows they don’t have a passsion for what they’re doing.
I think also if there is no message that’s being sent that also is important. When offering a service you want to make sure that customers understand what’s being sold and want to return. If there isn’t a website I feel this can also make the customer have a poor oopinion.
Strategically Made
Creating a social media page is the easy part, knowing what and how to post is a whole other thing though. Many people think it’s easy to just post a picture with a caption, and it can be, if done half hazardly. However, companies with successful social media pages know that it’s harder than it seems to keep people engaged. The best way to do that though, is to create a content strategy. A content strategy will give your social media page a theme, voice, and character. All of which are important to ensure your socials are sending the correct message to your desired audience and showcasing your company’s values. Having a content strategy ensures everyone helping to create content is on the same page and organized. Below is a snip from NASA’s Internship Instagram page. As you can see they have a clear theme of showcasing their interns in a way that also advertises NASA.
Tumblr media
When becoming a social organization, it is important to ensure you are sharing the sending the correct message to your audience because that it what you will be known from if it is the initial stand. First impressions truly are everything. That first impression is often made when a potential customer sees your social media page. If you have poor content and messaging that does not convey your company properly, the customer will have a poor opinion of your company and you could lose a potential customer.

Week 7 Blog post
In my opinion, effective content is made when its not only catered to different high engagement subjects but its relevant and appealing as well.
One example would be for Glamnetic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhPWHdTFfS0
Glamnetic is a company that sells magnetic lash glue and magnetic lashes. Applying eyelashes and having them stay on is an issue that many women struggle to do. They started the ad off with a relevant issue that people go through. They then show how the product works how simple it is to use and answer any questions.
I think that if you are promoting a brand you should promote that brand in a way that isn’t just carelessly thrown together. What I mean is that for example Target posts things relating to clothing food or lifestyle. It wouldnt be relevant to start posting about fishing, boats or cars.

Hi marissa,
What’s interesting about your “This is quite concerning because all of that information is a powerful tool and it is all susceptible to being hacked” is that companies like target have already had this happen to them.
The only time that I’ve seen someone get sued was youtube. In summary youtube was producind ads on childrens videos which I believe is illegal. Youtube said that there aren’t any kids on their website which isn’t true and due to this youtube lost a lot of money. That’s why you see youtube kids on certain videos.
I think now as more people are becoming more technology savy we know that our information is being stored.
When it comes to big data, companies need to be aware of how that data is stored, if it is secure, and if they are legally allowed to store that data. As of right now in the United States, there is no comprehensive federal law that governs data privacy. This is quite concerning because all of that information is a powerful tool and it is all susceptible to being hacked.
There are some regulations that I found from this insightful article on osano.com
https://www.osano.com/articles/data-privacy-laws
The Federal Trade Commission Act (FTC Act) has broad jurisdiction over commercial entities under its authority to prevent unfair or “deceptive trade practices.” While the FTC does not explicitly regulate what information should be included in website privacy policies, it uses its authority to issue regulations, enforces privacy laws, and take enforcement actions to protect consumers. For example, the FTC might take action against organizations that:
·         Fail to implement and maintain reasonable data security measures.
·         Fail to abide by any applicable self-regulatory principles of the organization’s industry.
·         Fail to follow a published privacy policy.
·         Transfer personal information in a manner not disclosed on the privacy policy.
·         Make inaccurate privacy and security representations (lying) to consumers and in privacy policies.
·         Fail to provide sufficient security for personal data.
·         Violate consumer data privacy rights by collecting, processing or sharing consumer information.
·         Engage in misleading advertising practices.
Other federal laws that govern the collection of information online include:
·         The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), which governs the collection of information about minors.
·         The Health Insurance Portability and Accounting Act (HIPAA), which governs the collection of health information.
·         The Gramm Leach Bliley Act (GLBA), which governs personal information collected by banks and financial institutions.
·         The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), which regulates the collection and use of credit information.
As consumers, we need to be aware that everything we do online is stored. We should be cautious of what information we allow give to any site especially until the government can enforce better laws and management.

I think the contrast suprises me as well. From my own experience usually non medical ads that are super specific catch my attention but normally I just skip them. I think that if you and companies were going to raise it up to a dollar or past it, alot of legal issues would come up from that. For example in the article we had to read it mentioned the opportunity for people to either opt out of their data being tracked which apple is doing or have a time limit on the data.
I definately agree with this. It’s not only helping us with the social media knowledge if we make our own business and internet smarts as well.
Evil, Evil Internet
While watching and reading, I had a thought, as described in the reading how else would you fund your website? the model for T.V was not in cable subscriptions, and newspapers didn’t count so much on the individual sales, so it makes sense that advertising is the way to go.
I did find it very interesting that some advertising is directed to what you click on and what your profile suggests you would be interested in while some simply look at views. So if I produce an ad on YouTube and it gets an enormous amount of views then I will make more money, while if I am selling a new insulin alternative, I would only be interested in insulin dependent diabetics, so the algorithm would need to help direct the ad. This contrast surprises me, with Facebook viewing dollars per user at $.6, and blasting people with ads to make money. With this view it can be easily understood for the importance of surveillance of users. How much do I stand to gain if I raise ad revenue per users to an even dollar? So why wouldn’t I want to promise the company paying me that I will be able to direct their ads better than any other platform and increase their sales? This can only be done with data, and lots of it.
I would like to point out that it seems like this class is teaching us to either completely distrust the internet and its platforms, or open our eyes to the dangers and ethical issues we could face when dealing with new technologies.

Week 5 discussion
Businesses should have better security behind their website. If possible they should start using cloud services such as Salesforce.
Customers should be aware of security programs like avast and life lock that can help protect their information. Using life lock helps with thinks like social secury and identity theft but avast can protect things such as your ip address and many more. It would also help not to keep baking information on your devices as well as clearing your cookies
From what i understood after reading and watching these sources, I think after the success from facebook using big data to earn revenue some companies want their business to be successful which is why they use big data.

Exploring Fake News
ALGORITHMS
In my experience with the youtube and Instagram algorithm, they both are not in chornological order. The way to be seen is having your post be well recieved. Each website has a different way to benefit from that. When fake news comes along someone clicks on it and then it repeats itself to a new person.
Thw best example I can give is 5 minute crafts and any “hack channel” They  present themselves with a problem that most people have and the outcome is a poorly edited and not realictic result. Unfortunately many people have and still will fall victim into believing this as the number of views will continue to rise.
ADVERTISING
Advertising is HUGE. Its how we all learn aboout something new whether it be a new perfume album or clothing. However since some people use it for good it can also be used for bad.
The main example I see is when you’re on a site and you see an ad for something like “Doctos dont want you to know this trick to reverse grey hair” with an irrelevant image attatched to make it seem like the two are related. What’s interesting is that most of these come from news sites.
Exposure Exposure can happen when even if you don’t see it on your feed or an ad it becomes a big enough story that it either appears on the news or people near you start to bring it up around you.
One example of this was when the pandemic happened and many chinese businesses were going out of business due to what was percieved in the media.
Businesses and individuals should be aware of is if it seems too good to be true it most likelt is. This also invited them to do reasearch into what theyre looking into. Although it may be easy to do what everyone else in public is doing there are some times where an opinion needs to be made with the help of research

Hi Clifford!
I think the first qualities you mentioned are important in any field. Being creative is key especially when it comes to social media. I think there are some things that can be copied such as posting but youre absolutely right. Both brands shouldn’t be very similar to each other as it may lead to one or none of the products being bought.
I’m curious to how you would be more engaged on linkedin? Would you connect with past customers? What would you do there. ALso the resume building is a very good point to make.
Overall good post!
Social Media Consultant
There are many qualities you want to look for in a social media consultant. For someone to want you to be their consultant they aren’t going to want anybody off the street. They are looking for someone respectful, great work ethic and someone who is knowledgeable of the specific organization. Being creative is key, you don’t want to use the same tactics as your competitors, but at the same time you want to fulfill your clients requests.
If I were to act as a social media consultant for myself, I would advise myself to be more active. What I mean by that is engage with more users on apps such as LinkedIn, keep my profile updated. Get involved with more in school activities such as honors society, or any other extracurricular activities. Something I can do in the future is keep my resume updated.

Hi will!
I agree with your first point. I think that there are some older people who don’t know how social media works. Even if they did its not in a way thats appealing to attract business. I think your next point is EXTREMELY important. There are so many instances of people not enjoying their job because they were forced into joining.
I think posting more frequestly is a very good suggestion. If brands only posted 2 times per year they would miss out on so many things.
Overall great resonse!
Social Media Consultants
For BIS 315, we were all assigned to become social media consultants. As we learned in our lecture, consulting is helping. To get into a deeper meaning of the word, consulting is the creative application of knowledge to a specific problem or opportunity. I really like how in this definition it says opportunity. I often think of consultants as helping to take advantage of opportunities in the future, or help to smooth out opportunities of improvement.
There are many important qualities for a social media consultant to have. The most important I believe would be the knowledge of social media. If the consultant is unaware of how social media works and the impact it can have on a business, the results will most likely be sub par. I think a close second would be for the consultant to truly care about his or her work. This passion and drive will be demonstrated in the success of the company he or her is consulting with. There are many other things such as common sense, respect, integrity, grammar, etc. that would be crucial to be a good social media consultant.
If I was a social media consultant for my own platforms I would definitely make sure to post more. I post fairly infrequently and one of the biggest keys to social media growth is consistency in posting. I am not trying to grow my social media at the moment, but if I were this would help me tremendously.
Social media consulting is a very interesting concept. This is a very modern career, but I believe it is one to stay.

Week 4 review
I think the most imporant qualities to have are being creative and having communication skills. i think being creative is important in any business there is, It allows for you to be different from everyone else in the same field that you’re in. Having communication skills is something that is very important for brands to have. There are a lot of brands who have people complaining about not being able to reach someone and not being able to have something resolved.
My main strategy would for there to be a way to increase website traffic onto the page. I would start to research how people have increased their following and see what works best for us. Once it gets a larger following i would like to have an increased number of workers to help with finding more influencers to reach out to.

Hi  Sawyer!
i completely agree with your algorithm argument. What immediately came to mind was how there are anti vaxx communites within sites like facebook that probably started from results withing the algorithm. I think with more younger genrations being introduced to social media they get introduced to false information sooner or later. One such company is 5 minute crafts who has caused a community to be built from people debunking them. Most of them are “hacks” but in reality its just editing most of the time it isn’t good. I agree with your reasoning with kids and cell phones. There’s kids who are younger than us and get the latest iphone each time one drops-only to play roblox.
The Social Dilemma
Big data and algorithms are a major internal threat to society because they control everything we see online. Many Americans get their information from the internet, whether it be the news or just entertainment, a large portion of it comes from the internet. This is a major problem because many of them choose to believe everything they see. An algorithm can feed you a narrative that is catered to your beliefs so you never hear any facts or arguments from the other side leading you to believe what you read/watched was true. This is how so many flat earth conspiracy theorists came to be. The algorithm fed them more and more videos of what they wanted to see to keep them logged on longer until it was too late and they were convinced because there were no rebuttal videos fed to them by the algorithm. There are millions of American teens addicted to their phones and other devices. I don't believe it is too much of a stretch to say that many of them have been lead to believe something false because their favorite social media platform fed them misinformation that fit the narrative they wanted to believe, leading them to hold a false truth. A smart algorithm that works to keep users logged on (which most do) can corrupt just about anyone with a device, which should terrify people. A recent study showed that kids as young as 10 years old have cell phones, do we really want big tech companies and their algorithms corrupting the future of our country? Many parents who were not born in the era cell phones do not understand the dangers they bring. I understand the need for a child to have a cell phone for saftey concerns, but they do not need 24/7 access to a smart phone. A standard flip phone would serve the intended purpose, instead we have todlers running around with tablets missng out on their childhood getting corrupted by Silicon Valley develeopers and their addicting algorithms. To deal with these issues on a parential level, if I were to ever have children I would not allow them acceess to a smart phone until they are in highschool. Even then I would limit their screen time because life is not meant to be lived through a 5 inch screen. On a socital level I think we need to be more disiplined as a society. Our attention spans are so small we can't keep our focus on one thing for more than a couple minutes without pick up our phones. Then we get sucked into our phones mindlessly scrolling for hours. We need to be more aware of what we are consuming on the internet. Independent research needs to be conducted before coming to conclusions and believing something as a fact.

Hi Li!
I really like how you format each of your posts, its very visually appealing. I really like how you gave background information on the documentary  and the lecture. It helps as someone wouldn’t have to refer back to their notes but can just remember based off of your description.
I think we’re living in a time now where misinformation  is CONSTANTLY being spread. I think the current example is in regards to the vaccine and how people feel about it.  You mention that social media is addictive which I agree with. Somethng I thought was interesting was that in Tumblr settings you can get rid of infinate scrolling which I guess if their way to “help”.
I think education is very important. When the internet first came out people were concerned about safety for their kids. As the years went on we became more technology based. As the years go on not only do we have to educate ourselves on being smart but about the dangers.
Very good post!
Week 3: Social Media, Privacy, & Data
Tumblr media
Source: “The complete guide to social media design”, 99designs
The Netflix documentary The Social Dilemma reveals how social media platforms are designed to manipulate human behavior for profit. The design of these platforms is centered on capturing its users’ attention, which is then sold to advertisers. Common practices include various types of notifications to keep us engaged. As people use social media, tech companies continue to collect data on its users’ interests and habits in order to formulate personalized content. These data-based algorithms allow companies to understand their users better and uncover new ways of keeping users online. For example, the company could build a model–from the data collected–to predict users’ actions. This information provides insight on what ads should be displayed on a users’ feed, increasing each ad’s success rate. Big data and algorithms are powerful tools when used to influence human behavior.
There are also dangers of big data and algorithms. This week’s lecture video explained that big data minimizes an individual’s privacy online. With big data, personal information regarding health, credit history, etc. can be tracked and analyzed without the individual’s knowledge. Companies who have access to this information often sell it to advertising companies. This could make people more vulnerable to advertisements that don’t benefit them.
Algorithms, on the other hand, can rapidly spread misinformation and propaganda depending on a user’s interests. Ideology based on conspiracy theories or racism can incite violence and insurrections, for example. Furthermore, the addictive nature of social media–crafted from data-based algorithms–contributes to a society where people are lonely, jaded, or unhappy. Overall, there are risks to using data-driven platforms, which users may not always be aware of.
In my opinion, I think these problems can be dealt with through education. First, individuals can educate themselves on ways to decrease social media use. By reducing the time spent on social media, individuals can mitigate the mental health consequences. Second, businesses can implement training on information privacy, teaching employees how they can protect their information and their clients’. Finally, having organizations like the Center for Humane Technology can inform the public about tech companies’ practices. Increasing the public’s awareness will enable society to hold tech giants accountable for their actions, leading to more ethical practices with big data and algorithms. The issues resulting from social media are complex and extensive, but education may be a valuable starting point.

Social Dilema Response
The algorithm can be a very good thing if it works in your favor. One such example that the documentary mentions is the possibility for donors to help other people.  They’re powerful things as they can determine what our lives look like, what we see on a normal basis. It can help bring people together who otherwise would never meet. This is how I’ve found if not all the people I’m subscribed to.
The bad are the addictiveness that this can cause. You look on your phone you see something that you want to see and if it isn’t we just scroll it again and this can last for long periods of time. Another thing that is negative about it is the algorithm can favor certain things as the case with Tik Tok. They have come under fire for pushing forward contact from content creators who fit a certain mold. Some examples being having tan to pale skin eye shape and certain features are all examples. The danger with that is people see that and can try to look like them in order to be recognizes or more commonly people who don’t look like that get ignored from the algorithm.
I think it makes sense that it can be dealt with on a personal level but not so much for societal and professional levels. Its easy for me as a person to not use a certain app but not for the other levels. I also think society is coming to terms with how dangerous social media is. There are so many instances of creators saying they’ve been away from social media for their own mental health.

I think its really comendable that you had written so much about your experiment compared to how I barley wrote anything in mine I liked that you were able to achieve so much. I think its interesting that your friends were on their phone. Whenever I’m out with someone I usually dont tend to be on my phone. I like to live in the moment but I’ll only use my phone if I’m not the first one. Overall I”m glas this experiment worked out for you!
Week 2- part 2
Based off my findings after tracking my social media usage, I have created an experiment to alter my social media use significantly. I decided to go with four 6-hour periods free of social media broken down into 2 days. I started this experiment on 7/1 until 7/2.
I woke up on 7/1 at 9:00 am and started the day off social media free for 6-hours. This was initially very hard considering my days usually start off by checking every social media platform from bed for about an hour and after I start my day. Instead, I woke up and went about my day without my phone. Multiple times I went to check my phone out of instinct and quickly realized that I needed to put my phone away so I wouldn’t feel the need to check it. In that 6-hour period I was very productive. I showered, made breakfast, got coffee, did some homework, and before I knew it my 6-hours were up. I realized I had less anxiety and felt more productive than I have in a while. It was a very nice time to catch up on all of the things that I have neglected to do because I would get caught up on scrolling through social media.
My next 6-hour social media free time started at 9:00 pm on 7/1. This round was significantly harder considering nighttime is where I spend most of my time on social media. Again, to resist the urge I hid my phone and found other things to occupy my time. I spent the next 6-hours applying for jobs, watching Netflix, cleaning my room, and finished up some homework. By hour 5 I was ready for bed which is huge considering I never go to bed before 2:00am and concluded that the reason I stay up so late is because my phone is a huge distraction and keeps me up. In all, this 6-hour period was very relaxing and will definitely start having a social media free hour before bedtime.
My third 6-hour social media free time started on 7/2 at 8:00 am. I woke up feeling very refreshed from going to bed so early the night before. I got out of bed as soon as I woke up, put my phone away, and started making breakfast. When I finished, I decided to go to the store to get some things that I’ve been needing but have been holding off on doing because social media makes me significantly lazier. After, I went to lunch with some friends, I noticed them all checking social media throughout and noticed how anti-social we can all be at times. It was so crazy watching others go on social media during times that are so unnecessary. It made me realize why do we all feel the need to check these things when our friends are right in front of our faces? After this 6-hour period, I opened my phone to an insane amount of snapchats. Some snapchats were from my friends well we were at lunch which made me laugh considering we were all there to experience it in person.
My last 6-hour social media free time started at 8:00 pm on 7/2. This round was pretty difficult. I was very antsy the whole time and almost went on social media. I resisted and spent my time packing for up north. After, I watched Netflix to pass the time and before I knew it my 6-hours were up, and I was ready for bed.
In all, this experiment was very eye opening and I have decided to make a conscious effort to have hours of the day that are dedicated to going on social media. I have realized I am significantly less productive because of social media. These past 2 days I have gotten more stuff done than I have in a long time. This experiment was challenging but it made me realize the changes I need to make in my life.

Reading your post, it reminded me of how Apple got in trouble for doing the thing in which they would vibrate and not be relevant to a notification.
I agree with everything you said in your second paragraph. I barley post on my art insta even though I’m trying to build my brand on there. I wonfer do celebrities ever try something like this. I don’t think any of us go to social media because we’re addicted but rather its an unconcious behavior.
Social Media Experiment
After seeing logging my social media and technology activity for 1 day. I realized I frequently check my phone for no reason. I found myself having a hard time going even 10 minutes without looking at my phone for a notification. The funny thing is, I didn’t even have a reason for checking for notifications. I didn’t post anything, or have any conversations I was engaged in. So, as an experiment, I decided to 24 hours without checking social media and tried to resist checking my phone. I found that it most difficult resisting the urge to check my phone all the time, and even got anxious about it. I honestly can go without social media with no problems, I just tend to scroll through it when I’m bored.
In conclusions, I found that social media is not a weakness for me. I rarely make posts, so it is easy for my to unplug for a while. Technology in general, is another story. I logged several hours watching TV, several more on my laptop doing school work, and couple hours on my phone as well. I didn’t realize just how much time I spent consumed by technology instead of engaging in more productive activities.

Social Media Assignment pt 2
For part 2 of this assignment, I decided to see how little I would check my phone for anything social media related and only use it if I needed it. For example earlier I was looking into various restaurants for what we were going to eat for lunch. My goal was to “live in the moment” and use it when necessary for example to search something up or to respond to messages. I decided to record my findings in the 24 hour style that was done previously. The results are as followed.
 -
 9-10:20am
After  waking up and checking the time I watched the beginning of 2 YouTube videos  before watching disney+
11-2:30pm
I  went o30ut with my family. The only time I was on my phone was to look up  places to eat, otherwise I wasn't on my phone
5:00-5:20pm
I  went on Instagram and I got caught up on stuff. Funny enough I found out that  a product I was interested in for my hair was recalled for hair loss! I also  talked to my friend
6;36
I  played yakuza 0
7:20-9:30                       nothing to report
10:00-10:30 played various games while looking at my phone.
10:30-11:00 went to the gym and proceeded to scroll through YouTube.
Since I’m not at home I’m often in the car and in public. I tend to not look at social media. I’m not sure why this is but it could explain my lack of responses.
