My weird view of computing history.
The complete push to the cloud has certainly started some interesting debates. There are also many areas of complete confusion to the layman. Experts say this, others say, that. Tamayto, tomahto. Who is to believe? And, is a good answer to be more like an ostrich, and keep your head firmly selected and planted in the ground until this phase of technology passes us by?
Allow us have a quick look at computing since say the late 1971s to early 1990s.
Just like many people in THIS today, we started away playing with data on mainframe computers using mainframes and punch cards. All of us upgraded to dumb ports by the mid 1972s, a very exciting time. A business data services were provided either in house, by a local college or university, or by a service provider. Only some companies got their own big straightener. It was just too expensive. Most banks and the major corporate agencies, for instance, were tightly attached to their APPLE machines.
As we shifted to the late eighties we started seeing some interesting new software that was not created and sold by IBM, come to market. Consultants were implementing new accounting and management accounting systems. 1 system stands out, in my mind, SAP R/2. The Germans were mailing consultants around the world, disrupting the natural order. Still only a number of companies can take good thing about these new applications and consultants. They were pricey.
The first small computers were being seen in the late 1971s early 1980s, desktops! They will were for games and children, surely? Who could be serious with these machines? The programs, in fact, were written in Fundamental or lower level code which has been not going to cut it in the business world. Cobol and Fortran ruled. Somehow these puny machines were eventually brought in to the business world. Initially these were standalone boxes existing around departments that needed to complete some type of research. Disks were copied and carried around the section. Sneaker net, was developed. The earth started viewing that desktops from Apple and IBM could be linked via a thing called a network. Attaching computers? Again, what silliness is after us?
After that in the early nineties the hardware companies released a new idea. Client-Server. Wow, could this really be the end of Big Iron? Surely not? Could a firm have the own internal data management office? Should they? Can they trust them? In that case software companies started changing the landscape on the hardware companies. Microsoft bought operating systems from APPLE. Scandalous! Who are these people? Bill Gates, who does he think this individual is?
Eventually large companies were introduced to a new software concept, an ERP, and the terrifying name; SAP R3 commenced to be heard around the globe, in early 1990s. People who experienced never seen a computer screen were asking why people were paid the big bucks to watch TV all day long. Soon, they themselves were taught to use a computer and a mouse by participating in simple card games! In that case they learnt about the roll out of SYSTEMS APPLICATIONS AND PRODUCTS (SAP) R3 from corporate HQ. Their lives were altered forever.
Companies with the major war chests were the first movers. They will realized in order to be more effective, productive, reduce margins, could onlu adopt technology. Relational databases, Carbonilla Routers, Networks, SAP, Oracle, PeopleSoft, BAAN, became titles across the globe. The new business warriors were those who could make these systems work and computerize the workplace. The largest companies outspent their competition and were unstoppable. More compact companies wondered how to compete.
Then came the net and computers could go wider than networks dreamed of.
A few years later; a new game player. Off premise hosting models were set up so that economies of size could allow small players to share resources. This kind of included; buildings, hardware, web servers, routers, air conditioning, and of course warmware or people. They could place their servers with their software in some other companies building. Expensive people would be shared to make it all work. Application Service Providers or ASPs as they are known sprung up. Info storage companies spanned the globe, hungry to deal with important computer data. Much like the original shared service models of the seventies and eighties.
Then this altered further as it was tweaked and named Application as something (SaaS). Even more confusion, being added to the market place. Fundamentally in this model, the company that developed the software manages and retains your software, prove machines. Servers and resources can be shared amidst multiple clients, leading to more economies of scale and better pricing. Now you incorporate some really experienced people running your business software for you. In the event that something should ever go wrong, the guys who wrote the code exist to make it work. That is impressive. That is worth considering.
Consequently now those two aspects are now known as 'the cloud. '
