Generalized anxiety disorder frequency tables (GAD) - running my first program
Now, in order to refine my research question, I will focus the study on a particular sample from the data set, letting the research question as it will be next presented:
Is drinking/drug use associated with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) in young adults who have consumed alcohol/drugs in the last 12 months and have presented generalized anxiety episodes during this time?
The variables selected in order to start the data analysis regarding my research question are:
S9Q14DR= ONLY/ALL EPISODE(S) IN THE LAST 12 MONTHS BEGAN AFTER DRINKING/USE DRUGS.
S9Q14FR= STOPPED DRINKING/USE DRUGS 1+ MONTHS AFTER ONLY/ALL EPISODE(S) IN THE LAST 12 MONTHS.
S9Q14HR= CONTINUE TENSE/NERVOUS AFTER ONLY/ALL EPISODE(S) WHEN STOPPED DRINKING/USE DRUGS IN THE LAST 12 MONTHS.
S9Q14JR= ONLY/ALL EPISODE(S) PRIOR THE LAST 12 MONTHS BEGAN AFTER DRINKING/USE DRUGS.
S9Q14LR= STOPPED DRINKING/USE DRUGS 1+ MONTHS AFTER ONLY/ALL EPISODE(S) PRIOR TO THE LAST 12 MONTHS.
S9Q14NR= CONTINUE TENSE/NERVOUS AFTER ONLY/ALL EPISODE(S) WHEN STOPPED DRINKING/USE DRUGS PRIOR TO THE LAST 12 MONTHS.
Now, using SAS Studio to get the frequency tables for the selected variables, and taking as data sample young adults between 18 and 25 years old, the results are:

Is generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) associated with drinking / drug use?
DATA SET AND TOPIC SELECTED
After reviewing the information into the codebook for the NESARC study, I found myself interested in the generalized anxiety topic. By now, as I am not completely sure about the specific variables I will use to proceed with the data analysis, I will include all of the relevant and useful variables about generalized anxiety in relation to the research question that I will try to solve. All the selected variable will be attached at the end of this publication.
Now that I am going through the generalized anxiety topic, I will take the next step to determinate what is the thing that I would like to know about this disorder.
RESEARCH QUESTION
Although anxiety in general is usually caused by internal stimuli such as problems, fears, memories or some kind of thought that can generate a feeling of stress in the individual, according to some publications on the subject, this disorder can also be related in a way direct with the use of alcoholic, hallucinogenic substances or due to uncontrolled medication, despite the fact that on many occasions, people with generalized anxiety says they use those substances because with that, they can feel that the symptoms are reduced[1, 2, 3].
Said that, I consider that I am most interested in exploring the association between the generalized anxiety episodes and the alcohol consumption and/or drugs use.
HYPOTHESIS
Base on literature, my hypothesis about this topic is that anxiety symptoms are related with the consumption, abuse or dependence of a drug like caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, cannabis, cocaine, heroin, ecstasy, etc. So, regular drug users have higher levels of anxiety than non-users, even after having abandoned consumption, and also it is possible to say the drugsand /or alcohol consumption and the generalized anxiety episodes present a two-way relationship [3,4].
