FINAL: TIME AND MOTION
CHANGE
This series is a more thematic and personal take on the prompt. This is a reflection on everything that has so quickly changed in just this past year. The idea was inspired by image one, featuring the board with swappable letters that my family has on the kitchen counter. It has not been changed since New Years Day, mainly because of laziness, even though we pass by it every day. It has also served as a kind of reminder of how quickly time passes; hence the inspiration for this series.
The next four images depict what I'd consider to be the biggest changes in my life in the past year. I quit playing piano after 10 years of lessons last year, and I haven't really touched the piano since. The shadow of my hand on the piano represents the past me who would practice every day and improve, but would also be constantly stressed and pressured to do better. The second big change was that I got my driver's license finally. Just in general, driving was and still is a stressful thing for me. And unlike a lot of other teenagers I was not looking forward to it. The keys on the car were positioned to look like the hands of a clock. And the last of the big changes is my overall understanding of myself and retrospective-ness I've gained this year. I already touched on this topic in my Light and Shadow project, but it really has been important to me. The image depicts a five dollar bill falling in front of a baby picture of me that I've had in my room for as long as I can remember. This past year I've learned more about my personality and the way I do things via the Enneagram, and determined that I'm a Type 5. While it does sound silly and a little self absorbed, it has been legitimately helpful to look back at my life with this new perspective; a filter.
The fifth is a slow shutter speed shot of me arranging the various objects from the previous photos together, inspired by the studio shots we took of everybody's things. This is supposed to represent me trying to balance all these shifts in my life over the past year, to the point that I'm rushing and always a little anxious, as seen in the motion of the image.
And finally, what better image to be the last of the semester than the first image I took with my camera that I got for this class (time, eh?). It also works on a thematic level, because it has been (almost exactly) one year since my family adopted that cat, Finn, for my dad's birthday which is later this month.

Influence: Chris McCaw
I was inspired by Chris McCaw and his use of light in black and white photos. I was most inspired by "Sunburn," but in the sense that it made me think of outer space, how everything is so vast and dark. So the theme of this series is outer space, and how even though it is infinitely ginormous, it can be beautifully simple. So simple that I could take all of these images right in my bedroom.
The idea is that black and white represents an old, closed-off way of looking at the world. You can see this in the dusty glasses in image 4, which keep the wearer in this closed off headspace. And as it would happen, the first three images were never in black and white to begin with. It's just a matter of perspective and time. The first and last images match, but one is in color. Except technically they are both in color, it's just different settings on my lamp. The color was there all along.

Time and Motion Proposal
Michael Perrone - Time and Motion Final Proposal
Working Title: Savory
Description
The theme of my project is savoring every good moment and living in the present. Many people, myself included, are always worrying about the future and what we’re going to do. From the troubles of things like work and bills, to the looming issues of things like the current political climate, one’s thoughts can become bogged down with stress. The solution? Savor every good moment. Whether it’s when you accomplish something great, or even when you take a bite of some good food. Close your eyes and savor the feeling. It’s okay to live in the present for a while.
To demonstrate this theme, I imagine a narrative of a character who starts out as a frantic, rushing mess, both physically and mentally. I imagine the use of a slow shutter speed would be effective here, as well as a composition with lots of negative space on the right side, to show that the focus of the character is more concentrated on the future. Throughout the day, the character struggles with work and money, but also struggles with the looming thoughts of the future, and it makes him overwhelmed. But by the end, the character remembers to relax a little, taking time to eat a good meal. I imagine a close up of the character eating, filling the whole frame to show that in that moment, he doesn’t have to think about what comes next.
Outcomes
Likely 6 images, I imagine that the image where the character “savors the present” (mentioned above) would be larger than the other images.
Methods/Materials
Tripod, some editing, slow shutter speed/Bulb, general composition of space and positioning.
References
The primary inspiration for the theme of this project came from this video: https://youtu.be/vp_dzqZXgMg?si=7rvHqX-mO8tJd5dE by JaidenAnimations. TL;DR She talks about one of her favorite franchises Chikawa and how it made her appreciate the little good moments in life, and how they should be savored by living in the present. That’s where I got the idea.
Supporting Material

I imagine also that food advertisements could be a good source of inspiration.

--- STATEMENT ---
The basis for my project was the Enneagram and my “Type 5 fixation.”
Tumblr media
Background Information:
The Enneagram is similar to the Myers-Briggs personality test, but rather than looking at what a person does and assigning a type based on that, the Enneagram looks at WHY a person does what they do, and assigns one of nine types based on that. And no Buzzfeed quiz can diagnose your Enneagram type; only you know precisely how your own brain works, so only YOU can diagnose your type.  The best way to figure yours out is to visit the Enneagram Institute website, thoroughly read the descriptions for each type. Whichever one makes you feel the most called out, that’s your type. And make sure you read ALL NINE before you decide. I thought I was a type nine at first, until I went and read type five’s page, after which I knew for sure that I was a five.
The Enneagram is a complicated and nuanced topic, but for the sake of my project, all you have to know is that Fives are people who seek to hoard knowledge in the hopes that it will be enough to protect them from the chaos of the real world. Fives like myself live inside our heads. They want to be prepared for any stressful situations ahead of time, such as speaking in front of a crowd.
However, Fives tend to struggle with commitments, decision making, and hoarding, all of which I can say are things I definitely struggle with.
My images all depict different aspects, positive and negative, of the Type 5 experience. From the innate urge to learn to the ugly fear of commitment.

In these photos, I chose to represent myself as different colored hoodies, not only because that’s easier than taking pictures of myself in these settings, but also because I’m always wearing them. Unless it’s a scorching summer afternoon, it’s a safe bet to say I’ll be wearing a sweatshirt or hoodie.
These pictures all depict “me” in my natural habitat, so to say. Whether that be with my cats, at my desk working or gaming, or sleeping in bed. The sleeping picture was the last one I took, and that was after I had found a wig. So I used it to create a very accurate recreation of how I look sleeping, down to the gloves, which I use when my hands get dry and covered with eczema.
Perhaps the most conceptually unique photo is the one where “I” am surrounded by my old artworks, most of which are from when I was in middle school. There’s also the box of art supplies that I got as a gift when I was around that age. Though, I never really used it that much. And then as I got older, I got into digital art, so that box has been collecting dust in my closet for a while. So I thought this would be as good a time as any to use it again.

Cristina Mittermeier does a variety of different types of photography, but I particularly like her wildlife/ocean photography. She makes strong compositions with animals and their surrounding landscape. She uses her work to promote the conservation of oceans.
Mittermeier was born in Mexico City in 1966. She graduated from the ITESM University in Mexico with a degree in Biochemical Engineering in Marine Sciences. In 2014 she co-founded SeaLegacy, a non-profit organization using strategic communications at the intersection of art, science, and conservation to protect and rewild the ocean for the benefit of biodiversity, humanity, and climate within our lifetimes (cristinamittermeier.com).
