I adore you, Jenn!
Farewell to the Goblin King.
For a few days now I have been trying to parse my feelings about David Bowie leaving the planet. It has been strange and surreal. Whenever a celebrity passes there is this strange feeling of guilt because you don’t feel like you should mourn them because you did not know them personally. The fact is though, they were a part of your life, whether they were physically present or not. David Bowie was in the constant soundtrack of my life. I grew up in the MTV generation that he helped to build. I watched Labryinth on loop as a kid and even as an adult. In my formative teens and twenties when the goth was strong with me he was the father to most of the bands that I played on loop. He was an omnipresent part of my life.
I have always admired him; his style, his ever changing persona, his musical talent. You could see by his appearances on TV and in Movies he had a great sense of humor (which for those of you that know me is vital). When they talked about the play Lazarus opening, I began listening to the new songs and couldn’t wait for the full album to drop. ★ is infectious. And then, like so many others upon his passing and realizing just what a deeply profound piece it was… well it just flat out broke me. I can’t think of a proper adjective to fully describe what a beautiful piece of art it is.. because it is beyond just music.. It is Transcendent; it is ethereal art.
With the passing of anyone who has impacted your life I realized just how much I took for granted; David Bowie was otherworldly and not meant to be ravaged by mortality. I always assumed he would be there because he always has been.
Because of the inundation of media that has been out I have been overloading my brain with info about him, his life and his work. I never quite grasped just how deep, nuanced, and profound his work is; how so many stories and references. And with his constant changing persona his style changed, his subjects changed as his interests in subjects changed. He was riddled with mythology, mysticism, literal references, and art. It wasn’t just amazing music; it was a nuanced masterpiece.
David Jones was no different; I keep reading stories about what a genuinely good man he was; how he loved art, literature and humanity in general. He wasn’t pretentious, or allowed his work to get to his head. He took time out to just be the best human he could. How he had a great sense of humor and took time out to drop a line to his friends just to give them some love or a laugh. He loved learn and create and just be. We can all learn something from that and take a piece of that and put it in our everyday life.
★ is no different that his past work in the way that it is brilliant. Though after his passing and you realize just what he was saying it leaves you gutted. The videos are heart breaking and tell the tale of a man saying goodbye to the people that loved him. He has left is mark on the world, and with that, a gaping void when he left. But he did it his way, like the consummate artist he was. When I listen to ★ it was made fairly clear to me the message: The vessel that was David Jones is gone, but David Bowie is immortal, and his work will be here forever. “ If you’re ever sad, just remember the world is 4.543 billion years old and you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie. “ https://twitter.com/JeSuisDean

I wish we had this for our band, ~Swing That Cat!~
