Varian makes such a freaking good villain because he is everything that a hero should be. He is innocent looking and young, he wants to help the world, he is kind and compassionate and awkward and more than anything just wants to make his dad proud. He almost seems like the tragic hero in his alchemy, valiantly pursuing a noble cause yet doomed to fail. He even gets his own Disney princess song a la "legendary" or "part of your world" in "I will make you proud". But he is abandoned and left to face a major trauma with no support and no help and no knowledge or ability to deal with it. He has no choice but to resort to villainy, not of his own wants but of a deep desperation.

He is what Rapunzel could have become had Eugene remained dead. He is what Elsa did almost become after she was cast out of Arendelle. He is exactly what any true hero could have become had they had no help, no hope, no light in their darkest hour.

He is a reminder of the danger that lurks in all of us. He is a reminder to us to treat people with compassion regardless of what they've done. He is a reminder that sometimes good people do terrible things because they had no other options, because they were hurt and in pain and they need to be guided back to the light instead of immediately being punished. He is a reminder that people can change, that they deserve second chances. And he is a reminder that anyone, even the most "good" people, can fall into the trap of darkness and despair and need to be fished out.

Varian and Andrews toxic relationship:

The power indifference between the two and the subtle and unsubtle ways Andrew was manipulating varian.

Before I start this, I want to say I recognize some of these traits from my own experience of being groomed and manipulated as a young child from someone I saw as someone I could trust the most when I was in a bad state of mind. This isn't me attempting to put a weird fetish or sexualize a minor character, I just recognized some of varians behavior in the episode and started to think. I will handle this as best as possible and for any reason I made a mistake please let me know so I can either fix it or take this down!

1. What is varians and Andrews relationship?

Andrew and varian met when varian was at his lowest and in a cell. Andrew is perfectly aware of the power indifference they have and he takes advantage of that by letting varian think he has the power. He allows varian to be a part of the decision making, even if he isn't going to follow through with what varian voted on. Which led to a lot of arguments like towards the end of the second episode of season 3 when Andrew reveals he is going to bomb corona. Adding to this , he is perfectly aware of the control he has over varian and what he saw in him : a genius child who was in mourning and was in need.

(something my oomf pointed out is how varian not only was manipulated by him but he subconsciously trusted Andrew because they wear the same fluffy jacket.)

In sketches from the crew it is obvious that Andrew and varian didn't necessarily like each other. I'm sure they both found each other's personalities unbearable. But they needed each other. Andrew didn't hesitate to try and kill varian and varian wasn't even shocked by this. So I assume Andrew made it clear that he has no problem getting rid of him once they're both done with each other (which would have probably been never if rapunzel didn't come back)

I think their relationship slowly developed into a hatred but at the beginning they were together like glue. Andrew needed to give varian a reason to stay once he started mistreating him. He needed varians vulnerabilities to use against him in the future and even tell varian his own to guilt him. He let varian think he was the adult when in reality Andrew knows what he's doing. Often called the gaining access and trust development stage.

2 signs that varian was groomed

Withdrawing from friends and family

Yes, his friends were not around but once they came back around he still made it very clear who he was siding with. Not the saporians since he still wanted to erase the minds of corona to gain their trust again, but Andrew. He had that whole fight for Andrew and felt horribly guilty for it in the end. Andrew shut out anyone in his life (which is another sign that varian was being groomed)

Dressing older

Not even trying to look mature. He wanted to look like an adult. Something I personally did and have heard others do in their time being groomed was that they dressed like they were an adult. I personally did it because my groomer would shame me for dressing otherwise and would praise me when I looked older. not sure if anyone else's did the same but it is a clear pattern that when a child is being groomed they feel the need to dress older.

Like this is a child in an adult's clothes. Everything was even oversized.

Changes in moods and behavior

Duh do I even have to explain this. The minutes he got out of Andrews relationship he was himself again :(

Aggressive and or destructive behavior

Yes he already participated in destruction but that was because of his father and he was a mentally unstable 14 year old. After he met Andrew who only condoned and rewarded that behavior he only went further with destruction.

Self harm or suicidal thoughts

Before Rapunzel made varian stay so she could fix the hot air balloon, he was ready to die. He was willing to sacrifice himself and die to "fix his mess". He was obviously already experiencing suicidal ideologies beforehand. There are many different signs throughout season 3 that varian was experiencing suicidal thoughts but I'll make another post about that.

Anxiety and or depression

Season 3 he was a wreck. Especially in the Cassandra red rocks episode (I forgot the episode name but you know the one). I think even if he didn't get into a weird cycle with Andrew he would still experience anxiety and depression but andrew only furthered that. The more Andrew could make varian fear him and trigger him and simultaneously need him the more leverage he had over him. (Which is another sign of grooming! Using his triggers against him)

Identifying potential victims

Again, he knew what state varian was in when he met him. That's why he chose him. He chose him because he was a vulnerable child.

Gaining trust and access (already covered that)

Playing a role in the childs life

He played the role of someone varian needed. He needed a father or just someone to protect him, let him feel like he was in some sort of control, and enable varians behavior.

Talking with children about personal problems/relationships to gain further trust (already covered this)

Discouraging a child's interactions with other people/adults (already covered this)

Edit : ALSO one of my mutuals made me aware that a type of grooming form is grooming for criminal or terrorist purposes!!

Almost two decades ago. It's still so catchy and fun and just an amazing Miku song, It came out when Miku was barely over a week old. This is probably wishful thinking, but I like to think it help set the tone for everything that was to come. Just an overall vibe of sincerity and fun. This is like, a sacred text to me truly, I teared up listening the first time eheh

(To be clear, the song came out sep 9th 2007. The animated music video came much later, which itself is incredibly charming and fun and campy in the best way. Just oozing pure love for Miku and the song.)
