Meet your 2014-15 Middle States Regional Officers!
We would like to introduce you to your regional officers. If there are any questions, they are here to help you- Middle States Region- so please do not hesitate!
This week, please meet your
Maryland State President - Michael Ecton
Michael is from Pi Theta Chapter, Haggerstown Community College

Hello Middle States Region! For those of you who I haven’t met yet, I’m Michael Ecton, and I’m your Maryland State President! If there’s any one point that I hope all of you walk away with after reading this Bio, it’s that I love Phi Theta Kappa, both in concept and practice, and will always go to my furthest extent possible to aid my fellow members in their endeavors! Now, with that out of the way, let’s talk about ME!!

I was born on a Naval Base in South Carolina, and was moved to Maryland at 2 weeks old. Once in MD, I lived on a farm for the first few years of my life before moving into Hagerstown with my 2 brothers and mother to live with whom would one day become my step-dad. Living in the part of town that we did, there weren’t many children nearby to interact with, so I mainly relied on TV and video games to entertain me (and now I’m the State President of Phi Theta Kappa. Take that, Childhood Psychologists!!). In fact, at 17, I was rated in the top 10 in the US by Nintendo’s online Ranking system for MarioKart: Wii.

To sum my childhood up in a few short points: - I’ve flipped and turned every gas-powered vehicle I’ve ever driven that wasn’t a car. (Total of 4 Go-Karts, 2 4-Wheelers and 3 Mini-Bikes) - I was always picked last for every sport/competition...ever. - My prom date was both arranged AND out of pity.

Now, as glorious as that sounded, it got better in college! As a fist-generation college student, I was culture-shocked, but some amazing things happened to me within my first month of starting at Hagerstown Community college, and it was all thanks to the friends that I made on my first day, who helped me tour the campus and boosted my self-esteem to the point where I could: - Join a Professional HALO First-Person-Shooter Clan as a Close-Quarters-Combat expert. - Become The Go-To guy for all things Anime and Video Game Related - GET A GIRLFRIEND - Speak to my classmates in a classroom setting. Now, this last one may seem silly compared to the others, but talking to people wasn’t something I took much interest in in my childhood, to the point I rarely spoke outside of answering, but the confidence I found thanks to the amazing friends I started college with is the primary reason I’m here today. Thanks to being confident enough to speak in class, I was able to interact more closely with my Calculus professor, Jen Szczesniak, whom I later found to be an advisor for my HCC’s Pi Theta Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa! Our discussions led to me finding out I could join immediately thanks to earning my credits and GPA in High-School. The rest is history, but to summarize, I threw myself into the heart of this society! Everything from bake sales and high-way clean-ups to Honors in Action and Book Drives, I took part of all that I could. It was and still is here that I found something that I could use to give back to the school that lifted me off the ground, and work my way up to the point where I can now be the one offering assistance! Phi Theta Kappa empowered me to become a better leader, and, as put by our associate- coordinator John Oritz, my goal now “is to go out and empower others!”

Now, just to tie up a few loose ends: Likes: Constructive Criticism, Competitive Gaming, Long walks on the beach Dislikes: Destructive Criticism, People who bash competitive gaming, Short walks on the beach So if you ever want to play some video games or just talk, send me a message! Seeya, Middle States! :D

This week, please meet your
Delaware State President - Anthony Bernal
Anthony is from Alpha Epsilon Zeta Chapter, Delaware Technical Community College-Stanton Campus

Hello! My name is Jesus Anthony Bernal and I have the pleasure of being your 2014-15 Delaware State President. I am the oldest of three boys, and my family comes from a small village in the state of Mexico thus, English is my second language. I am still connected to my family in Mexico and I enjoy going back to visit them. I am currently 21 years old. I recently finished my first associate’s degree in Computer Aided Engineering Drafting and Design. At the moment I am currently working on my second associate’s degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology. My educational goal is to be able to finish a master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. My career goal is to be able to work in research and development in the automotive or aerospace industry. Some of my hobbies include going to the gym, soccer, lacrosse as well as working on my car.

I graduated from Hodgson Vo-Tech High School in 2011 with a certificate in Automotive Technology. In Delaware there is this notion that if you do well in high school and you are a good student you end up at the University of Delaware. If you are not a good student or you do not take high school seriously you end up at a community college. The problem is from freshmen to seniors, it seems like those are the only two schools you are told about. So you go through high school believing that is all that is available to you. Being the non-motivated high school student I was, caused me to end up at a community college. When I enrolled at Delaware Tech my idea was to get in and get out so I could transfer as soon as I could to UD. Everyone had told me that college was very hard so my mindset was that as long as I pass the class I am happy. Looking back now, I am glad I went to community college. For by going to Delaware Tech I was to join Phi Theta Kappa.

I received my letter to join PTK in September 2012 and I remember when I saw that letter and read the words “honor society” I was like this must be a mistake. I took my letter to one of my teachers who happened to be an alumnus and he told me it was worth my investment; so I joined. One meeting turned into two, which then turned into helping with my chapter’s honors in action and college project. In December, right before classes ended, I was informed that the current chapter president was about to transfer and they wanted me to run for chapter president. I asked her, what I would have to do if I became president; her response to me was “just make sure everything gets done”. Now I know that is a lot easier said than done. But at the time that didn’t sound so hard so I decided to run, and in December 2012, I became the chapter president of the Alpha Epsilon Zeta chapter of PTK.

As chapter president my biggest concept was a team. If my officer team and I didn’t work together to accomplish our goals we would not succeed in becoming a 5 start chapter. The only problem was my officer team started disappearing and by the summer they were gone. So at that moment I did the only thing I could do which was to ask for help. I recruited friends to join me in my adventure. Slowly my officer team started to grow. I am proud to say with a set of brand new officers we were able to achieve 5 stars, but my biggest accomplishment by far was that I had built a team. That was the only reason we were able to achieve 5 starts because we worked together as a team. During November of 2013 I remember having a conversation with a few of my officers and they encouraged me to run for regional officer. I thought about it and decided why not. I thank everyone in my chapter officer team for if it wasn’t them I wouldn’t be here right now writing this. The biggest thing for me which I was able to get out of joining PTK was I found people who believed in me. For once in my life people believed in what I could do and valued my opinion. For anyone reading this, I encourage you to get involved; PTK is amazing and has changed how I see life. I feel like I could get into prestigious universities right now that before PTK I would have never even dreamed about attending. If I can do this SO CAN YOU!

This week, please meet your
Pennsylvania State President - Nathaniel Glick
Nate is from Alpha Nu Omega Chapter, Harrisburg Area Community College, PA

Meet Your Regional Officers: Pennsylvania State President Nathaniel Glick.
Hi, I’m Nathaniel Glick, your 2014 - 2015 Pennsylvania State President for the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society. I’m twenty two years old and I live in Harrisburg, PA where
I’m finishing up my third year as an engineering undergraduate student at Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC). This Summer I’m taking Calculus II, and in Fall I will be enrolled in statics, physics, and Calc III. I am currently employed at HACC as a lab technician, where my responsibilities include setting up, tearing down, and cleaning the equipment for the chemistry labs. As you can imagine, keeping busy is just part of life. Last year I completed approximately two community service hours per week on average while serving as chapter president for the Alpha Nu Omega Chapter. During that time, I was also employed part time by HACC’s Student Life department as an event planner for the Student Programming Board, a sister group to our campus SGA.

You may be tempted to believe that I’ve always been highly motivated and involved in my schooling, but you’d be incorrect. During high school, I did not take the SAT’s because I assumed I would not be attending college. I was not in a position to understand the value of higher education, so I simply joined the work force after graduating. Over three years later, I had become sufficiently discouraged with my employment prospects to begin seriously considering college to begin a new career. I was never particularly skilled at mathematics until I’d learned how to utilize pattern-recognition and useful concepts in real life scenarios instead of on paper.
My favorite subject—chemistry—gave me considerable stress and discouragement during high school. By affording myself enough time to mature, learn, and experience the world a bit, at age twenty I was finally able to settle down and devote the vast majority of my time and mental energy to my new college career.

Now I enjoy staying active in my college, both inside and outside of the classroom. As I look to transfer to a university next May, I plan to remain involved in Phi Theta Kappa as well. During my free time, I enjoy reading and watching videos about the sciences, especially chemistry. I’m excited to keep on learning, growing, and developing professional connections and uplifting friendships with my professors, advisors, and fellow Kappans for years to come.
To end (as a reward for reading to the bottom), I’ll leave you with one of my favorite quotes. It summarizes one of the foundational premises upon which I decided to pursue higher education.
In it, I hope you will find as much inspiration as I’ve found. Enjoy :)
"One's mind, once stretched, never regains its original dimensions."!

MSR MD RO - Michael Ecton grateful for Honors Institute
Middle States Region’s own Maryland State President, Michael Ecton, attended Phi Theta Kappa’s Honors Institute at Washington University in St. Louis. Read on to hear what Michael and other Phi Theta Kappa members had to say about Honors Institute in ΦΘΚ news experience.
Lecture Sponsors Make Honors Institute Possible
https://www.ptk.org/news/Lecture-Sponsors-Make-Honors-Institute-Possible
Wednesday, July 9, 2014
More than 500 Phi Theta Kappa members, advisors and alumni gathered June 16-21 at Washington University in St. Louis for the Society’s 2014 Honors Institute. Called the “crown jewel of Phi Theta Kappa programming,” the week-long exploration of the Society’s Honors Study Topic includes internationally recognized speakers, small group seminars, educational field trips and experiential activities.
Speaker Patrick Lee (as Captain William Clark) signs a copy of his book for Dr. John Modschiedler, the sponsor of his Honors Institute lecture.
Dr. Joan Fedor visits with speaker Ken Ramirez, whose lecture she sponsored.
What many of those 500 attendees may not know is that their experience was made possible by a group of former advisors, regional coordinators, alumni and friends who did an extraordinary thing. Passionate about opportunities for Phi Theta Kappa members, they had the vision and commitment to sponsor lectures for the Honors Institute with financial gifts to the Phi Theta Kappa Foundation.
“The Phi Theta Kappa Foundation is grateful for the sponsors of the Honors Institute lecture series, who made this outstanding program possible for the 2014 Honors Institute,” said Dr. Nancy Rieves, CEO of the Phi Theta Kappa Foundation. “We encourage those who’ve benefited from their generosity to say thank you to our lecture sponsors for making Honors Institute the high-quality program that it is.”
Participants may send messages of thanks to [email protected] and they will be shared with sponsors.
Michael Ecton, a member of the Pi Theta Chapter at Hagerstown Community College who serves as Maryland State President for the Middle States Region, said he’s grateful to those who created the Honors Institute, endowed lectures and developed the Honors Study Topic.
“The Honors Institute is greatly enriched thanks to the generosity of its sponsors,” Ecton said. “This experience has allowed me the opportunity not only to develop my own leadership skills in service to Phi Theta Kappa's future, but to also reflect on the leadership that was required in the past to get us all to this point.”
"We think it was cool that some of the lecture sponsors actually attended our general sessions,” said Lisette Dalton, Kentucky Regional President of Honors in Action. “It showed us how much value they placed in our general session speakers.”
“Knowing that the amazing speakers we have heard come at a high cost, the lecture sponsors allow the registration to be obtainable for students to attend Honors Institute,” said Shawna Gaccetta, a member of the Beta Delta Omicron Chapter at Tarrant County College and President of the Texas Region. “These sponsors allow Phi Theta Kappa's legacy of excellence to continue.”
The following individuals sponsored lectures at the 2014 Honors Institute:
First General Session Dr. John Modschiedler, long-time advisor at College of DuPage in Illinois, sponsor of: The Modschiedler Lecture Captain William Clark “Frontiers and the Exploration of the West”
Second General Session Dr. Janice Freeman and Dr. Joyce Freeman, alumni and long-time advisors at Wharton County Junior College in Texas, sponsors of: The Freeman Lecture Dr. Nina Tandon “Frontiers of Health and Medicine: Where Sci-Fi Meets Reality”
Third General Session Leanne Jardine, alumna and former New York Regional Coordinator, and Richard Jardine, sponsors of: The Jardine Lecture Dr. Ray Arvidson “Celestial Frontiers: Lessons from the Earth and Planetary Remote Sensing Laboratory”
Fourth General Session Robert Blank, former New York Regional Coordinator, sponsor of: The Blank Lecture Prof. Dan Rooney, Prof. Steve Schroeder and Dr. Patricia Scott West “Exploring the Gateway to the West: St. Louis, Missouri”
Fifth General Session Dr. Joan Fedor, International Honorary Member, former Washington Regional Coordinator, and the late Bob Fedor, sponsors of: The Fedor Lecture Ken Ramirez “Exploring the Natural World: Frontiers in Animal Training”
Sixth General Session The late June Cordier, International Honorary Member, sponsor of: The Cordier Lecture Dr. Sylvia Earle “Exploring Under the Seas”
Seventh General Session Gayle Wyatt, former Headquarters staff member who helped develop the Honors Institute, sponsor of: The Wyatt Lecture Pokey LaFarge ”Quest for Human Expression in the American Song Book”
Fedor, who also serves as a member of the Honors Program Council, has said that for her, Honors Institute was “love at first sight.”
"When I think about opportunities in Phi Theta Kappa I keep coming back to the Honors Institutes. I think our speakers contributed to international understanding long before we had the internet and email to bring us closer together,” she said. “Having international speakers come and talk was an incredible chance for our students to learn.’
Modschiedler was the first to dub the Honors Institute “the crown jewel of Phi Theta Kappa programming.”
“The camaraderie for students, the academic experience, are like nothing else,” he said. “Phi Theta Kappa has been the pinnacle of my community college experience, and I wanted to give something back.”
Rieves encourages others with a passion for Phi Theta Kappa to join these lecture sponsors in continuing Phi Theta Kappa’s legacy of excellence. For more information about how you can participate, contact Rieves at [email protected] and learn more at the Foundation website.

Meet your Middle States Regional Officers!!
Each week we would like to introduce you to your regional officers. If there are any questions, they are here to help you- Middle States Region- so please do not hesitate!
This week, please meet your
New Jersey State President - Rana Elmekadem
Rana is from Alpha Nu Mu, Camden County College, NJ

Hello Middle States Region! So today I will tell you a little more about myself, so that next time we meet I can just get to know more about you!
My name is Rana Elmekadem; I am the 2014-2015 New Jersey State President. I am 20 years old, and I am a Pre-Pharmacy major at Camden County College. I was born in Cairo, Egypt and came to the U.S. when I was 6 years old and went back once when I was 9. I have 1 younger brother, Ahmed, he’s pretty awesome! One of my favorite childhood memories was when we went to the pyramids in Giza, I was about 5, and we spent the whole day taking pictures standing on the pyramids, we were just tiny specks in the pictures. The best moment was when we had lunch on the pyramids, (this is impermissible), but we soon found that out when the officer came over and, ever so kindly, told us we can’t sit there and eat. It was a great day, and at the end of the day I can say “I had lunch on the pyramids!!” How cool is that?!
My career goals and aspirations: The next step after community college would be going on to pharmacy school to finish my Doctorate of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree. I plan to become a pharmacist, and would like to start off my career in clinical pharmacy, which is a hospital pharmacy setting. I am interested in working in the emerging “Hospital Care Teams”. Basically, they form a team of various doctors (physicians, nurses, pharmacists, etc) that offer better treatment and care for each patient. It’s a more interesting dynamic because I can still get the limited patient-doctor contact that I want while having enough interaction with others and not being completely closed off in the lab all day. I also hope to be able to do a lot of philanthropy for various causes that I feel strongly about.

My journey in Phi Theta Kappa: I was inducted into the Alpha Nu Mu Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa in April 2013 and served as one of two Co-Presidents after being promoted from Vice President of Leadership during the 2013-14 term. I found out about being able to run for regional office the night before the candidacy application was due, being the perfectionist that I am, this was not nearly enough time to prepare a satisfactory application and first impression. Originally, I was not going to apply, but I couldn’t stop thinking about it being a lost opportunity. So after my friend talked some sense into me, I pulled the famous all-nighter to get the application in an okay condition and I sent it in the morning it was due. I feared the worst, but a short time later I received my acceptance letter for qualifying as a candidate. I was ecstatic!! And that’s where my journey really began. With the help of my family and friends I executed a successful campaign and was elected. Through the campaign process alone I grew so much, from being the very shy girl that barely said a word, to becoming a more social person that looks forward to meeting new people and has a newfound love for public speaking. Granted I’m still a bit awkward at times, but what nerd isn’t?! From speaking at inductions and meeting new members I have only become more driven to better myself. And as I endure on this journey, I hope that I can empower you to become the best version of you yet, and that you can empower another future Kappan, or anyone else, to be their best. I started off my journey with Phi Theta Kappa as it being just another honor society that I can have on my resume, but very quickly I discovered that there is so much more to it than a prestigious name.

Some other fun facts: I am passionate about art and hope to purse it further and improve my artistic skills. I love playing tennis and just joined the tennis team at CCC. I also did Tang Soo Do, about 6 years ago, but had to stop, so I’m also hoping to go back and get my black belt. And Zumba is tons of fun! I definitely plan on being an active alumna with the BEST region ever! Most of these plans have to be on hold until after pharmacy school because it is a very rigorous 4-yr program and leaves me with no time, and just recently I found out how amazing s’mores are.

Dr. Risley commencement speaker at MSR chapter
Dr. Rod Risley spoke at five graduation commencements this year, one of which was Middle States own Hudson County Community College, Jersey City, NJ.

Here is what Phi Theta Kappa said about the HCCC graduation ceremony:
In contrast to the rural communities where the Alabama, Nebraska and Iowa commencements took place, on May 22 Risley addressed an audience of 3,000 at the graduation held for Hudson County Community College at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in downtown Newark.
Phi Theta Kappa member Diana Angelo received a standing ovation after giving the valedictorian address on behalf of the student body.
"We've had students from every race, every country...We've had single mothers, we've had people in the military. Many of us are the first in our families (to graduate college)," Angelo said. "Reaching the top means something different to everyone, but I know we all got there. I want you to remember what you accomplished here."
Risley told the story of member Maritza Beniques, a native of Puerto Rico. With two children, one of whom will be graduating from HCCC in May 2015, Maritza dedicated most of her adult life to providing for them. Until 2010, she worked at various jobs and would be offered promotions over the years that she could not accept because she did not meet the requirement of having a college degree. After losing her job in 2010, Maritza found it nearly impossible to obtain work. She enrolled at HCCC with the goal of becoming a registered nurse.
“Through several scholarships and help from family members, Maritza was able to make it through and complete her degree. The thought of becoming the first of her mother's children to graduate from college motivated her through the toughest times,” Risley said. “Maritza has been accepted to the New Jersey City University bachelor of science in nursing program, and plans to attend in the fall.”
Risley advised graduates that there has never been a better time to be a community college graduate.
“Ivy League schools across this country are aggressively recruiting these community college students,” he told the audience. “Because we now have the data to say that if you give these people a seat at the table at a selected senior college, they will perform as well, if not better, than students who attended that senior institution exclusively.”
Risley noted that Pell Grant recipients from the college were transferring to Yale, Columbia, Cornell, Brown, Rutgers and the University of California, Berkley. Following commencement he observed that 80 percent of the students at Hudson County Community College were the recipients of Pell Grants.
“They are so hungry for opportunity, for recognition and for someone to believe in them and guide them,” Risley said. “They are not victims, they are not ‘takers.’
“This is just a small example of how providing resources and access to college can build a better country for all of us.”
See full coverage of the Hudson Community College commencement online, and view photos from the event.
Congratulations to all 2014 #ptkcompleters!

C4 Fever Sweeps New Jersey
C4 Fever Sweeps New Jersey
Tuesday, October 22, 2013
Community college campuses all across New Jersey held a unified series of events to launch New Jersey’s statewide Phi Theta Kappa’s Community College Completion Challenge (NJ C4), spreading the importance of college completion, engaging faculty and staff as completion champions, and urging students to commit to completing a college degree or certificate.
A Signing Banner collects signatures from students committing to the completion of a college credential during the NJ C4 Initiative.
Each of the state’s 19 community colleges held completion events October 14-18 during the NJ C4 Initiative. The New Jersey Council of County Colleges (NJCCC) and the New Jersey Education Association (NJEA) partnered with the colleges’ local Phi Theta Kappa chapters to host events ranging from Signing Events, C4 rallies, transfer counseling workshops and more.
Students from Mercer County Community College man a booth during the NJ C4 Initiative.
“For the past four years, New Jersey’s community colleges have worked collaboratively to identify policies and strategies to transform ourselves from ‘access’ institutions to ‘access to student success institutions,’ ” NJCCC President Dr. Lawrence A. Nespoli said. “What better way to advance this cause than to involve our Phi Theta Kappa student leaders, our faculty members and staff members in this effort? We are grateful to partner with the NJEA on this initiative.”
The NJ C4 initiative aims to increase the number of community college students completing their associate degrees and certificates. More than 172,000 credit students were enrolled in New Jersey’s community colleges in 2012; only about 20 percent of community college students in the state receive a two-year degree within six years, according to NJCCC statistics.
“The NJEA is proud to partner with New Jersey’s 19 community colleges to support this statewide initiative that aims to encourage students to persevere, succeed and ultimately earn the credentials they need to succeed in New Jersey’s workforce,” said NJEA President Wendell Steinhauer.
The weeklong events culminated October 19 with the 2013 New Jersey Honors in Action Conference at Camden County College. Phi Theta Kappa Executive Director and CEO Dr. Rod Risley gave the keynote address.
“It is a great honor to be the first state to hold such an event,” said Pattie Van Atter, Middle States Regional Coordinator. “At no time was I ever concerned that the chapters wouldn’t rise to the occasion. They did just that and more — they were creative, inclusive and committed to the mission that was asked of them.
“I am very proud of the members and chapter advisors as they worked hard and gave up what little time they had to send a very important message. It will be through the efforts of the commitment makers and champions who will continue to work together that a culture of completion will be built in the state of New Jersey.”
At County College of Morris (CCM), scheduled events included TEDTalks featuring videos on success and leadership. The Alpha Kappa Kappa Chapter also hosted a Student Success Panel featuring honor student panelists describing their community college experiences. Selected faculty members were honored as part of a Professor Appreciation Day event.
“We’re excited that the students in the Phi Theta Kappa chapter at CCM are leading this effort on our campus,” CCM President Dr. Edward J. Yaw said. “NJ C4 is a terrific program, and our Phi Theta Kappa honor students put together an impressive platform of events to encourage college completion.”
Members of Raritan Valley Community College’s Alpha Epsilon Pi Chapter offered students an instant academic evaluation, during which advisors and counselors evaluated courses the students had taken toward their program requirements to make sure they were on the right track.
The Alpha Psi Pi Chapter at Gloucester County College enlisted an academic advisor to lead a workshop on study skills to help complete school. The chapter also informed students of math and Spanish study groups available.
“Helping each other, we can all accomplish our dreams,” said Tiffany Celeiro, an honors student and a Phi Theta Kappa member at Gloucester County College.
The statewide event is the first of many planned throughout the year in other states. Community college systems in Montana, Nebraska, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, Colorado, Michigan, Kentucky, Indiana and Kansas are either planning or considering statewide C4 events during this school year.
“Phi Theta Kappa is committed to actively promoting the completion of a college credential — an associate degree or certificate among college students,” Risley said. “Throughout this completion week in New Jersey, thousands of students have made that pledge and declared that they will, indeed, complete their education. Importantly, they have enlisted faculty and staff as Completion Champions to ensure their success.”
See full coverage of the New Jersey Statewide C4 Initiative, including local news stories and videos, on the Middle States Region website. Read more about the importance of this culture of completion at Inside Higher Ed.

Meet your 2013-14 Middle States Regional Officers!
Meet your Middle States Regional Officers!!
Each week we would like to introduce you to your regional officers. If there are any questions, they are here to help you- Middle States Region- so please do not hesitate!
This week, please meet your
New Jersey State President - Felix Contreras
Felix is from Alpha Delta Mu, Atlantic Cape Community College

Hey guys! My name is Felix German Contreras Castro, but you can just call me Felix! I am the NJ State President for 2013-2014 year and this is the “heads up” about me!
There has always been an inner child within me which will never disappear. I’m always illuminating with a positive aura which…eventually...hopefully… causes a chain reaction to spurt. I think it’s safe to say we have all had somewhat a difficult upbringing—everything wasn’t always jolly—even the jolly Felix has had his falls. But through the thickness of the terror and the glory of goals I have learned, grown and mature into the being I stand today. At times when I reminisce deep into my past I realize how every single tribute has aided me to understand –the self—to a certain degree.
Hailing from the Dominican Republic at such a young age I was terrified of this new world I had no choice, but to call home. However, as my knowledge expanded and my ambitions grew I realized this is my home. Being the curious fellow—I shall not stop being—is indeed a great attribute I proudly own. Although during upbringings I never acknowledged the importance of academics; I made up for it when I attended my community college.
At Atlantic Cape Community College is where my journeys begun to fulfill my lives goal. Education was my priority over anything and I soon came to love the headaches, all-nighters and the A’s; the agony is truly worthwhile! My passion was attracted to the sciences and social integrations of humans then I told myself, “why major in one discipline?” After many hours of contemplations I decide to pick three majors which are: Biology, Health Services, and Sociology. My milestone goal is to become a Medical Doctor but it is a mere reflection of what truly want to do in the future! Then came along one of the most uplifting organizations I have ever join they go by umm let’s see Phi Theta Kappa!
Phi Theta Kappa has empowered me tenfold the amount of any other organization I have been a part of. They are truly are my rock and have contributed the opportunities of a life time. Being able to travel the country and meet individual who strive for excellence is indeed arming me for the future. Every day when I wake I think about a quote a famous speaker has said, every time I’m on FB it intrigues by the humanitarian projects the members have accomplished, every time I’m on the phone most likely is a Phi Theta Kappa member—my life—is truly become breathing, thinking, and eating Phi Theta Kappa; literally!
You only have one life to live… if you live it right…one life is enough. I live to learn; I learn to serve; I serve to give hope for the voices which go unread. Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else life. By following my intuitions, my inner voice I have developed a tenacious characteristic; which at the end I know will make—all the difference—in the world to satisfy my personal legend goals.

Meet your 2013-14 Middle States Regional Officers!
Meet your Middle States Regional Officers!!
Each week we would like to introduce you to your regional officers. If there are any questions, they are here to help you- Middle States Region- so please do not hesitate!
This week, please meet your
Pennsylvania State President - Jossalynn Hornbaker
Jossalynn is from Alpha Nu Omega, Harrisburg Area Community College

Hello, my name is Jossalynn Hornbaker and I am the 2013-2014 Pennsylvania State President. I am a student at Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC), Lancaster Campus. I am double majoring in Social Services and Psychology. I plan to go to Elizabethtown College to work towards a MSW, Masters in Social Work, and a Doctorate in Psychology. I am not 100% sure what I want to do with my degrees yet, but I have an interest in working with people who suffer from PTSD, especially veterans and victims of abuse.
I became involved with Phi Theta Kappa after my first semester. I was inducted in March of 2012, and became president of Alpha Nu Omega in May of 2012. Everything about Phi Theta Kappa interested me but the service aspect is what really pulled me in. I love to help people and this was a way I could do it on a much larger scale. My time as chapter president helped me in a lot of ways but the opportunity to become a Regional Officer again gave me a way to help on a larger scale. What I hadn’t expected was the friendship I would form and the lasting bonds it created. I became friends with people who not only supported me but also pushed me to be more than I thought possible. Being PA State President has opened up fellowship opportunities that now I have friends not only in my own state but those of my region and beyond. My friendship with Regional President Megan Giles was formed first through our involvement in our own chapter and has grown from there. We decided to run for Regional Offices together and have formed a friendship that will go beyond our time at HACC. I have also started to form this friendship with my fellow officers. This is the bonus to all the hard work we do through and for Phi Theta Kappa.
As for outside of school I have first and foremost my husband, daughters, and stepson. My husband is my best friend and we ride bikes together (motorcycles) and work on cars, and pretty much do everything together. It is very rare to not see us together. My daughters are 14, 12, and 9. My oldest will be starting in high school this September and is, like her mother, an honor student. She is also in the process of becoming a volunteer firefighter. She is a brilliant child already working on her own life plan, which include being a lawyer. My middle daughter is a precocious little one, who is always the apple of her teacher’s eye. Everybody who meets Hayley instantly loves her even though she has a penchant for trouble. My youngest daughter Jordan is the baby of the family and as such expects to be treated as the princess she believes herself to be. My stepson, Joshua, is 13 and also an honor student who spends most of his life playing video games. As for me, I wouldn’t say free time is something I usually have a lot of. When I do I love to read, EVERYTHING, I like bonfires, spending time with family and friends, running away with my husband on occasion, and spending time with my girls. Alyssa and I read and discuss books and movies. Hayley and I play board games and video games. She enjoys, on a nightly basis beating me in Mario Cart on the WII, I am getting better though. Jordan and I also read together, and go for walks to talk. I find it’s important to spend alone time with each of them. We also do lots together as a family. I usually carry 15 credits in the fall and spring semesters, but my kids find it highly entertaining that I don’t just make them do their homework after school, but also sit with to do mine and help them if they need it.
I hope to help the Middle States Region and my own state as much as possible during my term. I encourage any and all of you to contact me if you need help. Even if you are not from my state I am here to help and encourage everyone.

Meet your Middle States Regional Officers!!
Each week we would like to introduce you to your regional officers. If there are any questions, they are here to help you- Middle States Region- so please do not hesitate!
This week, please meet your
Middle States Regional President - Megan Giles
Megan is from Alpha Nu Omega, Harrisburg Area Community College in Maryland.

My name is Megan Giles and I serve as Middle States Regional President for Phi Theta Kappa. I live in Hummelstown, Pennsylvania, originally from the very small village of Grantville which is only about 15 minutes away from the Hershey/Hummelstown area.
As a teenager I did not care about much other than acting. The theatre was a place where I could begin to lose my self-consciousness and the only place I would show any discipline and determination. I was one of those kids who believed that school got in the way of real life—real life defined as having fun. I moved back to Pennsylvania from Ocean City High School in New Jersey after my junior year to attend a half day of regular school and the other half in the theatre program at Capital Area School for the Art (CASA) in Harrisburg. Finally, school interested me by allowing me to incorporate my love for the dramatic arts into my daily routine. Shortly after moving, I found out that I would need to take two extra classes to be able to graduate in Pennsylvania, two classes that were not in the curriculum in my New Jersey high school. Another year of high school completely not an option in my mind, I finished out my year at CASA, dropped out of school and obtained my GED about a month later. I thought that I had this life thing figured out and had all the education I needed to pursue my dreams which were basically to continue acting, write about life and live carefree and unburdened. How quickly I learned that living carefree requires more money than I had and that making money required more than just a bubbly attitude toward life.
I spent from age 18 to 25 struggling to become the person I wanted to be without obtaining an education. I knew that I was smart but since my high school experience was not ideal, I thought that college would be against my beliefs. I came to a point in my life where I was caring for myself, my boyfriend and two children by working two jobs and saving every cent that I could. I cried a lot during these days. I decided to start working toward a college degree, any degree, to increase my income. I did not start this for me. As I said, my pride let me believe I was not in need. I did it for those children. I enrolled in one class at Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC), a math class (my weakest subject), to see if I could do it without wanting to run out the door screaming. In the months leading up to the start of this class my boyfriend left me and took those kids, who were my driving force, my ambition, out of my life. Every part of me wanted to give up. But somehow, through the pain of that split, I saw that I had started toward something. I was about to turn 25 and I knew that if I did not make a change now then I never would. I called it a “quarter life crisis” at the time. Most people do crazy things in crisis. I made a crazy decision too—to walk in to college and commit to completing a degree, no longer just for more money, but for my own happiness, to fulfill my passions, to live my dreams.
I excelled in that math class. It was the first A that I had seen in a long time. I found that all the restlessness I remembered feeling in high school was gone. I was focused now. School was important to me for the first time so I tried harder. I fully believe that there are people who should not go to college straight out of high school. Some of us need to find our way. It takes some longer than others to realize their potential and focus on their strengths. I worked with my advisors and explained to them my dreams of traveling to different countries, how I wanted to write about the things that I saw and use my acting skills for broadcasting or public speaking. At this point in my life I had no dreams of acting on a famous level. I still continue to act in community theatre which is perfect for me. I knew that I did not want to be a theatre major. We talked about my desires for a long time. When I walked out of the advising office I was set on obtaining an associate degree in Humanities, Languages and the Arts with a focus on Human Communications.
I have been attending HACC as a part-time student for the past few years. My community college experience has been amazing. I went from a high school dropout to a Dean’s List student. I was welcomed with open arms into the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. When I met the members of my Alpha Nu Omega chapter I knew that Phi Theta Kappa was something I needed in my life. Here was a group of people who were a positive influence, who were helping the community and encouraging me to help as well. They inspired me and treated me as if I too were an inspiration. I became Executive Vice President on a chapter level because of the encouragement of my fellow members. They believed in me when I did not know if I truly believed in myself. They pushed me to do more and be more. That is exactly how I decided to campaign for Middle States Regional President. Having alumni to mentor me and members for support is what this organization is invaluable for. As Middle States President I feel that my job is to be here as an ear and a guide for members looking to reach above and beyond. I also feel that my time speaking to others, networking and giving speeches will help me with my future goals.
School is a huge priority in my life now. I spend my time outside of school exercising and being out in nature, sometimes combining the two by hiking or jogging…and chasing around my crazy little nephews Lukey and Jax. I also try to volunteer with local organizations and attend cultural events as I am always trying to expand my horizons. My favorite pastime, as many people will attest to, is simply meeting and talking to new people. I love to hear where others come from and how they made it to become the person they are today. I love to hear life stories. I write every day whether it is poetry, journaling or snippets of short stories that I may one day find an end for. And I am still acting, whenever I find a free minute.
I am not quite sure where the future will take me. But one thing I have learned is I will have an education that allows me to adapt and thrive in any situation I find myself in.

MSAHI recap via FB
I sat down to blog about the amazing weekend the Middle States Region had at MSAHI ’13 and pondered where to start?! Then I saw all of your AWESOME posts and status’ and was truly inspired. This region is the best for so many reasons, however, one reason trumps them all…YOU! You, our members are the greatest in the world and this blog highlights just a small reason of why. Special thanks also to our officers, advisors, alumni, staff for all you do, and really just who you are. And last, but never least, to our fearless leader, Pattie Van Atter for creating a warm, welcoming, caring and open environment that allows the love of learning, success and all things Phi Theta Kappa to be experienced and shared throughout the region! In the words of Pattie, “Many hugs!”
P.S. – If I missed your post, send it over – this is a work in progress! :D

Nathalie A.
I had a weekend to remember.. Loved seeing fellow chapters from the Phi Theta Kappa Middle States Region it was just a wonderful experience both officers academy and HIA institute :D
Kristine G.
I've learned absolutely the greatest lessons and I feel blessed being a part of such a huge family. I have lots more work to do now because one thing I learned was no matter what everyone else is accomplishing doesn't mean I have to compete with them for their goals. I have to compete with myself on my own goals and be humble in everything I do. Thank You Phi Theta Kappa and GoodBye MiddleStates Region!! (For now)

Gary W.
Had a great time with my MiddleStates Region. Can't wait to see what follows!!!!
Diego G.
This weekend was truly a success because along with meeting so many great new people that I can actually call friends and learning so much about Phi Theta Kappa, I was most importantly able to get much closer and comfortable with the rest of the Alpha Theta Theta officer team! Thank you for an amazing weekend.

Heather G.
It's been a very long, but very awesome weekend. I spent most of it meeting and working with some amazing people. I also made some new great friends that inspired and motivated me to steer my chapter toward the greatness we all strive for. I didn't get much sleep, but what I lacked in shut eye, I gained in knowledge and confidence! Go MiddleStates Region!
Catarina R. to Phi Theta Kappa Middle States Region
As a new inductee, new officer very eager to learn but also very nervous as to what these four days would bring...I am so happy to say that i had a blast... with so much lack of sleep, but still lol!! Loved getting to know you guys, well some but we have time. By the way, I'm Alpha Theta Theta's VP of scholarship and my name's up there ^ Nice to meet you =D

It seems like every time I hang out with the rest of MSR, I always walk away with a new drive to become an even more outstanding member of the Phi Theta Kappa family. Glad I got to experience it with you all (even if I was the only person who drove home to Maryland at midnight!) Looking forward to seeing you all on the road to Orlando - "Ice in the Freezer"

My love letter to the Middle States Region. Dear Middle States,
During Middle States Academy and Honors Institute 2013 I saw that our region's culture of competition can be described as combining our competitive strengths, working together and looking beyond self to solve the bigger problems in the world. You have shown me that we are strong, we are beautiful, we can laugh together, and we can work together as a region.
After attending Chris Davidson's educational forum I thought hard about the term "servant leadership" which he defined as leading by putting others before yourself. Servant leadership is how I view my position in the Middle States. I wear this medallion proudly to serve you. And I truly mean that I will do all I can to support every chapter in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, the District of Columbia and New Jersey.\\\
Thank you for the time you took out of your busy lives to attend this weekend's conference. Thank you for the respect that you have shown each other, our alumni, the coordinators, advisors and the rest of our regional team. Please do not hesitate to reach out to your Regional Officers. We stand behind you 100%. I also hope that you realized through this conference that other chapters are here to help. I encourage you to share ideas and support each other as chapters. We will not reach the top alone. I am honored to not only be a part but a representative of the BEST region in Phi Theta Kappa. With love, Megan Giles
Pattie Van Atter
28 advisors 142 members 12 alumni, and an awesome Regional Officer Team representing 32 chapters spending a weekend together = 1 energetic, passionate, committed Middle States Region in Making Success a Reality. I hope you learned, laughed and lived well these past few days, I surely did! Each and every moment- a treasured memory. Even my debut as a rapper! ;) Many hugs and thanks to each and every person no matter your role as each was instrumental to the success of MSRAHI'13. You ROCK!

Megan Giles
Alpha Nu Omega
Harrisburg Area Community College
All my life I wanted to help the less fortunate. Like many people, I had good intentions but never acted on them because I was not sure of how to help. I earned my first service points with my Alpha Nu Omega chapter when we partnered with Isaiah 61 Ministries, a Harrisburg, Pennsylvania based organization that benefits the homeless by providing food and clothing, driving people to doctor's appointments and providing emotional support. One night we put together boxed lunches for those living on the streets of Harrisburg. We then went into the city, bringing those boxed lunches along with hot food. In an alley, on a folding table, we served dozens of people. The ages ranged from 60 plus down to under 10 years. I was speechless. There were children. There were pregnant women. All of these people had no food to eat, nowhere to go. I realized that though I may not have much in terms of money, I had time and I had compassion. These were important things. I listened. I made friends. That was when I realized that even a small effort can go far in changing lives.
If elected as a Regional Officer, I would use my leadership to focus on service. Scholarship provides us the wisdom to realize our potential for benefiting others. Fellowship is how human connections are made. Phi Theta Kappa is the combination of scholarship, leadership, service and fellowship working together to create better opportunities for ourselves and our communities.
Ted Kaiser
Pi Theta
Hagerstown Community College
It was my second semester of college, sitting in English 101. My professor at the time, a strong supporter of Phi Theta Kappa, makes an announcement in front of the class. "We have a very special person here with us today." Everybody looks around, and then I realize she is looking at me. She goes on to say, "Mr. Kaiser has been invited to join a very prestigious honor society called Phi Theta Kappa." It was at that time, I knew I did not want to be just an average college student. I wanted to be the best student that I had the ability to be.
Shortly after being inducted into our local chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, my vision changed. Being a part of Phi Theta Kappa, taught me there was more to do than just be the best I could be. I have learned vital leadership skills through service programs at the college and events that have benefitted the community. As well as, helping fellow students make the commitment to complete their degree and stay on track in pursuit of their dreams. These are just a few of the areas I have had the honor to take part and serve at.
Finally, I see the time approaching, in the not so distant future, when I will go to a four year college. All this means is I still have time to do more. I would like to use my abilities and experience to lead a motivated team of fellow visionaries to make a difference in our Middle States Region and beyond. When I wrap all that up, that is what Phi Theta Kappa means to me.
Luis Rivera-Correa
Alpha Theta Theta
Essex County College
The Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society represents service, leadership, fellowship, and an abundance of opportunity if we are willing to do the work necessary. This Honor Society truly has shown me how as an individual we can be of service. To me, being of service is being self-less and this represents focusing on the primary purpose in any event. The officer team effort has heightened my efforts to help the chapter in any way possible. Through this, I have become an officer of the chapter. I have placed more time and dedication towards making sure that the Alpha Theta Theta members are aware of all events, meetings, and goals that the chapter is striving to accomplish. Through working as a team and maintaining constant communication with each other to keep the members informed, and encouraging them to continue succeeding in their academic pursuits, we have grown as a chapter, and as individuals. Being a Regional Officer, I would continue to stay in contact with not only the officer team, but the general membership. I would continue to give my all to help this Honor Society grow as a whole. I believe that anything can be accomplished when we are working together, in unison, to further the purpose of the chapter and thereby the PTK organization. I believe in being organized and prepared, and I am ready to work with anyone in any given situation. These are some of the many assets I will bring to the table as a Regional Officer.
Candidates for the Office of Delaware/Maryland State President
Allen E. Calvert
Pi Theta
Hagerstown Community College
When I initially enrolled in college, at the age of nearly 57, I felt quite intimidated but aspired to a Grade Point Average of 3.5. The first person I met was Sherry Donovan, the Alternative Energy Coordinator. She also happened to be the advisor for the Pi Theta Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, and she convinced me that I should aim higher. I did.
I was invited to a chapter meeting before I was even qualified to join, and I was impressed with the caliber of people, their focus, and their dedication to the educational process. Not only had that dedication impressed me, but also their sense of service and giving back to the community was equally striking. From then on, I became actively involved with the chapter. The following spring I ran for chapter office as the Vice President of Fellowship, which I subsequently won (unopposed).
During this year as VP of Fellowship, my involvement with the organization has grown, and I feel a strong desire to contribute to the growth and success of both my chapter and my region, Middle States Region. I would like the position of Middle States Region Maryland State President so I can work towards helping to grow stronger bonds and connections between neighboring chapters. I believe those connections and bonds are the essential element that will propel our region to the next level of success within the Phi Theta Kappa International arena.
Christina Ramsey
Beta Alpha Tau
Community College of Baltimore-Dundalk
I am ecstatic to be a member/officer of Phi Theta Kappa. I have had the opportunity to develop leadership skills through our school projects and extended my educational growth amongst my fellow Phi Theta Kappa peers. As a group, we have worked together to build a strong honors community on campus and increase awareness about our organization. We have seen an increase in students becoming involved in the program and request guidance from the members. Through my life experience, I have noticed that a whole is only as strong as its weakest part. I am passionate about joining other chapters in the region together so that by learning from each other we become stronger as a whole. This organization has been very instrumental in making me the leader I am becoming. As Maryland state president, I look forward to helping pull all of those parts together to make us a stronger state.
Candidates for the Office of New Jersey States President
Felix German Contreras
Alpha Delta Mu
Atlantic Cape Community College
To me Phi Theta Kappa is a lot more than an organization. It is the way I manage to hear people's hopes in improving the community college experiences; to find solutions about how to diminish social and academic problems, in hopes of broadening and deepening not only the college but the community itself also. I have always been searching for answers, ambitious to explore other people's perspectives, and meet individuals whose customs are different than mine. I know Phi Theta Kappa will allow me to obtain insights to grow and learn on how to become the best leader I am capable of being. I look forward to acquiring knowledge that comes with scholarship, perseverance, and leadership. As regional officer my goals will be to pass on each grain of knowledge I obtain, to motivate other Kappans, in hopes that they will become inspired. Then, maybe they will pass it on to someone else, and a movement will begin increasing the student body to participate with their Phi Theta Kappa chapters.
Grace Engels
Alpha Upsilon Pi
Sussex County Community College
To me, Phi Theta Kappa is synonymous with "opportunity". Since my induction, I have been inundated with opportunities that were not present beforehand: volunteering at events and food pantries, meeting new people and making new friends, scholarship opportunities, and so much more. In general joining Phi Theta Kappa has given me the immense opportunity to grow myself as a person, and I know it can do the same for other students. Through Phi Theta Kappa I have become more organized, more involved in my community and campus, and more confident in myself. My confidence has improved specifically in the field of public speaking because of Phi Theta Kappa. At one event I had to speak in front of over 400 students, and I am generally a very shy person. That event, however nerve-wracking, helped me realize that public speaking really isn't that big of a deal. As a regional officer, I will promote Phi Theta Kappa to other students on the basis that it will help them grow as individuals. I will strongly encourage members to get involved in as many ways as they can. I truly have enjoyed my experience with Phi Theta Kappa as my chapter's public relations secretary and know I will succeed as a regional officer.
Sarah Kamal
Alpha Nu Mu
Camden County College
In less than a year Phi Theta Kappa has become a second family to me. Like a family it helped me become more confident and it developed my leadership abilities. Phi Theta Kappa helped me adapt to my new college environment and it gave me and other dedicated members the courage to share our personal thoughts in front of many people. We spoke and listened to one another. Looking back I feel that Phi Theta Kappa has affirmed me as an individual.
As a regional officer I would promote this sense of family. I would pass on to others what Phi Theta Kappa gave to me as a person. This is a way for me to give back and thank the Phi Theta Kappa family for its generosity.
As a regional officer I will be supportive and give direction where needed through one on one meetings and cyber communication. Letting the executive board members from colleges all over the state know that I am there for their questions and concerns will bring an awareness as to how closely knit our honors society is. I will encourage members at each college to be more faithful to attending our yearly events.
I would like others to benefit from Phi Theta Kappa as I have and I would work to make this happen. I am truly interested in leading this group as a family.
Sofia Carolina Medina
Alpha Theta Theta
Essex County College
Due to my family's financial circumstances, my higher education options were limited after high school; I was devastated because my hard work seemed fruitless at that time. At the start of my college career at Essex County College (ECC), I became actively involved in Phi Theta Kappa. This involvement gave me a renewed sense of purpose and determination that helped to keep my educational and professional goals alive. I felt this way because in Phi Theta Kappa, I have found a very supportive family. The diverse Kappans I have met have taught me valuable lessons; I have learned to set high personal goals for myself and to always persevere despite struggles.
To me, Phi Theta Kappa means a supportive network, a family, which always motivates me to work to my full potential. This family significance will help me to promote Phi Theta Kappa by striving to make all chapters in the state aware that they are a critical part of a big family with the common goal of exercising the hallmarks. I plan to accomplish this by continuing and building on local and statewide chapter competitions (Middle States Gold Program) to complement active and constant outreach to chapter leaders. Competitions such as those aimed at increasing student enrollment, chapter participation in community service, and fellowship activities among chapters.
Candidates for the Office of Pennsylvania State President
Jossalynn Hornbaker
Alpha Nu Omega
Harrisburg Area Community College
A big part of what Phi Theta Kappa has been to me is the friendships that I have been able to build. I understand much better now what the four hallmarks of our society mean; Scholarship, Fellowship, Leadership, and Service. I feel since I have become chapter president that my Leadership skills have strengthened immensely. I may still struggle some days with being able to take the lead over other adults, especially when we don't see eye to eye. I am now able to stand up in front of a room and speak easily and with confidence, which is something I have always struggled with. I have become a much better mediator, problem solver, and multi-tasker. Through different commitments and conferences I have not only had to the privilege to meet people from all of our five different campuses, but from other college's as well. I want to take all the positive experiences I have had and encourage others to do the same. I want to help them get involved at any level and help them be able to follow through on their dreams. I am a mother of three and a wife who is now not only a Social Work major but also a Psychology major. I have several health and mental issues that I contend with. I just want to help people know, that no matter what your situation is in life there are ways to achieve all that you want.
Vincent Orlando
Alpha Sigma Rho
Reading Area Community College
Starting college again has been an exciting adventure in my life. Making new friendships, taking challenging classes, and getting involved in student activities have all been part of this latest chapter of my life. As I became more familiar with Reading Area Community College, I stumbled upon Phi Theta Kappa at a college event where members of the Alpha sigma Rho chapter were handing out pamphlets describing this student group. It was only after reading about Phi Theta Kappa and speaking to other members that I knew what path I should follow during my stay here at RACC.
Today my whole outlook on being a member of Phi Theta Kappa is taking on new meaning as I become more involved. I am realizing that this organization is where my energy, time, and commitment should be directed. Learning to be of service and to give of myself is very rewarding working together with fellow members on projects throughout the campus and community. There are so many opportunities to grow and develop that it is amazing that everyone isn't jumping at the opportunity to join Phi Theta Kappa, but this I believe is what makes our membership unique. Being elected Regional Officer would give me the opportunity to promote service, leadership and honor in education and set an example so that other students may have hopes to be part of a great organization as Phi Theta Kappa.
Candidate for the Office of Washington, DC President
Abdul - Hameed Nurriddin,
Beta Sigma Upsilon
Community College of the University of the District of Columbia
Phi Theta Kappa means becoming a part of an international community dedicated to leadership, scholarship and service. It was an opportunity to join a community that has set standards and goals, all designed to cultivate the skills necessary to turn the scholarship, and knowledge into the wisdom needed to apply knowledge to aspects of leadership and associated service.
The structure and motivation to collaboration amongst members contained in the Phi Theta chapter goals, is an essential to growth in the field of profession each member seeks, and the competitive edge is meant to hone these qualities. I have found that the five star chapter developments outlines clear, attainable, time specific elements to planning and coordination with college administrators to help the college community we are in, and to take these collaborative efforts to the community which we live. Phi Theta Kappa means teamwork, visibility, collaboration, creativity, which I consider an invaluable goal of service.
As a regional officer I would apply my understanding of the Phi Theta Kappa pillars in the most creative ways possible and encourage creative communications with each member of the region to expand the visibility of Phi Theta Kappa. I would encourage, and assist when necessary, to the successful completion of projects and community service projects in creative ways, which enhance the abilities and growth of the members and chapters.
