HE MIGHT BE AN ASSHOLE  ―  but john’s an asshole with a highly - trained eye. though, to be honest, it would be impossible not to notice bob’s discomfort, even without one, which makes it an easy decision to snatch up the sweatshirt he’d folded up and set aside earlier, toss it to bob without a word. it shouldn’t get in the way, and bob can cover up, if he wants. whatever works.    ❛  control and suppression aren’t the same thing. you can't slap a band-aid on a bullet wound and call it a day.  ❜    and wouldn’t his shrink be proud if she could hear john now? applying concepts from therapy in a practical setting. look at him go.    ❛  and you wouldn’t hurt me.  ❜     he hadn’t really the first time, to be honest, with the benefit of hindsight. yeah, sure, the sentry had ragdolled them all around some, but he hadn’t done any serious damage… vibranium arm - removal notwithstanding, obviously. (  dick move of the highest order on the big guy’s part, frankly.  )

at least the sting is only temporary this time . pity how something so harmless , affectionate even , could pinch at his heart and drop it deep into the pit of his stomach . there are days he doesn't even think about the use of the nickname in his past , but more often than not he can hear the fragile voices of unfavourable companions muttering it beneath the well meaning tone of new friends . it can be hard to differentiate who's voice is who's . he doesn't like to think about where they are now . . . dead , and you didn't help them ! bob draws in breath through his nose , holds it in his lungs until ' sorry , bob . ' it all releases with a smile —————— the effort walker makes to correct himself will be kept close to his chest .

" is that a good idea ? " bob reaches to pull at his sleeve , an act of self preservation in keeping himself hidden , to keep everything out of reach where it he can do no harm . his whine is quiet when he finds no fabric to tug at , forgetting the slim fitted quarter sleeved shirt he'd been given for today's practice . " i mean it's already kinda controlled , it's locked away so i can't . . . fuck everythin' up . " bob had walked in with a measure of confidence , but now he could feel it slipping away with his slouch and shuffling of uneasy feet . " i dunno . . . i just , i don't want to hurt you - " he stumbles over his meaning , caught up in frustration of his own making , " what if you teach me how to disarm someone instead ? " hope gives life to his expression and forms the beginnings of a smile . its futile and he knows it . " less work , less risk . . ? "

❛  SO YOU WANT ME TO TEACH YOU, jemma simmons.  ❜    she could just call her jemma. they’re friends now, or something close to it, there’s really no reason for yelena to distance herself from the other woman any longer, which is exactly what that little “quirk” of hers is all about. distance. keeping others at arms length so there's no risk of getting attached. too late for that, evidently, and besides, it’s objectively funnier this way, particularly when the doctor turns it around on her. she doesn’t know if anyone’s ever done that to her before. yelena’s already unzipping her jacket, shrugging it off to leave it in a pile on the mats that walker would scold her for if he saw it, neat freak that he is. as it is, she merely kicks it aside and assumes a loose stance in front of jemma.   ❛  i can teach you. the others will help.  ❜     like it’s not a question, and really, it won’t be. they’ll do this for jemma. they’re all overly - indulgent with their pet scientist. her head tilts to the side, almost thoughtful, but there’s a smile hiding at the corners of her mouth.    ❛  it’ll be great. like a training montage from an 80s movie.  ❜    / @analyticallyminded !

SLEEP IS SOMETHING HE’S FOUND HE NEEDS LESS OF THESE DAYS. a side effect of the serum, probably, but it’s not like he’s let anyone test that theory, considering what he knows now about O.X.E’s “medical” testing, and it’s not like the CIA’s any better, especially not with valentina at the helm. he just chalks most changes his body’s been through in the last few years up to the serum and moves on, and this is no different. still, doesn’t mean the lack of it doesn’t suck. physically? he’ll be just fine, functioning at optimal levels on four hours or less, good to go. mentally? not so much. for one, his mood’s usually worse, if he hasn’t slept through the night, which he rarely does, simply not able to quiet his mind, when he’s not waking up in a cold sweat. the night terrors don’t exactly help, either. 

fortunately, he’s not the only one who can’t seem to get a good night’s rest in this tower. sometimes it’s ava, pacing around and muttering to herself, or it’s bob, burrito’d in his covers in his armchair, just staring into space. tonight? it’s yelena, eyes glued to her phone even as the tv drones on in the background. he knows doomscrolling when he sees it, doesn’t hesitate to reach out and pluck the phone from her hands as he leans over the back of the couch.    ❛  what’re we watching?  ❜    doesn’t wait for an invitation, dropping down heavily onto the couch beside her, but keeping a respectful distance, tucked into the opposite corner. her phone disappears between the couch cushions, just for safekeeping. / @crimsonfive, for yelena !

unfortunately, his summons had not been merely a social call, and the mirth flees from him as quickly as it had come, his fingers digging into the other’s shoulder just barely as he thinks of the circumstances that had drawn bucky back to them.    ❛  and it is good you are here. perhaps… perhaps you will be able to reach her.  ❜    he can only be referring to shuri, of course, who in her grief has lost herself in her technology, her dogged efforts to save their king with her machines and her science. it robs her of time that might otherwise be spent at her brother’s side, though he understands the compulsion, the need to do something. helplessness is not a feeling he particularly enjoys either.   ❛  …she needs a friend by her side, now. before the end.  ❜
