Final 5 selected for Friday’s crit - with four additional photos for backup. I will have to up the size of the small snowball photo over the weekend. Otherwise pleasantly suprised with the amount of work that I was able to produce.
I just used the hot press to uncurl my photographs (the expired paper which I just used is very thin). It was a fun tool to use. Definitely going to come back and use it to flatten out other drawings which J completely throughout the week.
Details about the selection:
Three faces pressed into snow. From a acetate negative. No filter. Apature 5,6. 9 second exposure.
A moody corridor in the block of flats where I live. 400 iso film. Filter #4. Apature 5,6. 30 second exposure.
The entrace to my block of flats facing Andringa Street. Film iso 400. Filter #4. Apature 5,6. 30 second exposure. Mark over white doorframe exposed for 10 seconds out of the 30 seconds.
Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve facing Theewaterskloof Dam, Franschhoekpas. Covered in snow with anouther blizzard approaching (28 August 2021). Film iso 100. Filter #4,5. Apature 5,6. 60 second exposure.
Snowball fight on Mont Rochelle. Film iso 100. Filter #5. Apature 4,6. 50 second exposure. Mask (the two figures) exposure of 15 seconds out of 50 seconds.

My biggest regret on the snow hike was that I ran out of film before this moment happened. My friens pressed their faces into the fresh powder snow on Mont Rochelle. Luckily I snapped a photo and Ashley suggested that I cheat …
… by printing the photo onto acetate at CommPrint.
The result was good. I upped the contrast in Photoshop before printing the negative, so the photo looks more out worldly.

Uploading some journal scribbles. This was me trying to develop my first photo on Monday. I experimented with filter 5, and also a mask. It was my first try so it was not that successful. It took 4 hours to get this final photo (last photo in this post).

Two rolls of film, developed. Unfortunately three (!) of my expired film rolls did not develop. Very tragic that I lost all that work.

Lighting in the 3rd year FA studio>>> changes throughout the day.
This is not my desk but Andrea and Jess’s. They said I could build my set in their space. I am considering working with natural light only and then adding a bright spotlight for a more dramatic shadow.
My plan is to shoot with the ‘mik en drik’ camera, which has less settings and apparently produces a more tonally balck and white (not grey) image. My set should reflect this stark lighting if possible.

Rough ideas for costumes and more adsurd situations- crocodile costumes and post-production scribbles on paper.
I am interested in exploring the ‘kitsch’ aspect of portrait photography in the form of forced sets and curtains in the background. The to tamper with them when enlarging the film in post production.
Also>> It would be a waste to not include my already constructed crocodile suits.

Don’t look too close - the green screen still needs some touchups. Although the green of the green screen could work with the lighthearted feeling of my photos, I enjoy these more muted backgrounds too. I think that this gold colour is the best - but in terms of my series the pink might work better
