Living as Japanese 180: Keep our head up.

Not only in Japan, but also all over the world, it is said half-hearted is not good. What I try to say is if you want to make your dream come true in Japan, you should not be half-hearted by awaring of what those around you see.

As I wrote” a pressure to conform” in Japan before, most of Japanese would be defeated by this pressure and quit keeping our head up.

In Japan there is a saying which explains that situation. That is “a nail that stands out will be hammered down” in Japan. It means to keep your head down or not to stand out.

But, on the other hand, if your head is too high, those who think you stand out cannot hammer your head down.

If you have a dream and want to make it come true, please do not be defeated the pressure you feel from those around you. Let's keep your head up.

aaand yes! i just turned twenty five but i’m feeling younger. Years ago, I thought at twenty five means being able to do everything. But now that I got here, I learned to be grateful for slow and steady growth — even in uncertainty, to be more calm when things get overwhelming, and to trust His plans for me. I rarely post about political things,

But today is an exception.

The Philippines is in utter chaos not only for COVID-19, but also the imminent danger for our freedom of speech. As we speak, the Congress has finished its third and final Hearing of HOUSE BILL 6875 or commonly known as "Anti-Terrorism Bill".

This raises a lot of red flags as this bill explicitly states that it can arrest those who are "suspected" terrorists without knowing why. It also vaguely defines a terrorist, meaning it can be interpreted in any way possible - but mostly to be in your disadvantage.

This bill, not only endanger's an individual's civil rights, it also violates the 1987 Constitution itself, specifically Section 2 (Right Against Unreasonable Arrest, Search and Seizure) and Section 4 (Freedom of Speech) of Article 3, The Bill of Rights.

I know that we are all fighting our own battles, internally or externally.

But please, help the Philippines out. I'm writing to you this post and maybe this will be my last if this bill still continues its path to be a full fledged law.

it was the last week of online classes for the school year and i decided to rewrite my notes on the endocrine system of the human anatomy to study for our biology finals

for as much as studyblr may have its faults, it’s a pretty sizable online space that tells young girls that the absolute coolest thing you can do is be smart and work hard and believe in yourself and i think that’s pretty great

k i need some distractions so let’s have a chat.

idk about others but when i take class notes (whether it’s taught in Thai or English) my notes turn out like a mess of two languages together. bc me being a lazy ass student, i find the shortest/most meaningful word of either language to use, even that’s in the middle of a sentence.

for example, i was taking notes on a Coursera lecture (which is in English):

…if xyz method บ้ง, then use abc.

บ้ง is slang for ‘turns out shitty/doesn’t work very well’. i cant articulate a short english word for this so…

anyone finds this relatable? lmao

girls and guys and everyone between and outside of that. why don’t we share our study material with eachother? i mean everyone has these beautiful, smart notes but like. idk maybe it’s fun to share study material, like online books or assignments, with eachother so we can learn more!! i know a lot of people are at home, bored, and probably want to learn stuff. maybe link ur stuff under this post and reblog so we can spread knowledge instead of covid19?

honestly productivity happens when you start taking care of yourself. i admit that i’d been struggling with some food problems while i had class (stress eating unhealthy things, then feeling terrible). but now i eat a healthy amount while eating WELL and clean(ish) by making my own food, and i’ve reached a fitness goal! i feel stronger and more focused, and it allows me to study efficiently. take care of yourselves please, and hit me up if you want to talk about trying to be healthier because i’d be happy to help.

some things i’ve learned while studying in quarantine

drink more water instead of more coffee.

weekly goals are bullshit. set yourself 3-day goals. you’ll be less laid-back.

don’t just mindlessly stare at words. before you start studying, know your approach to it. have a plan.

summarizing the concept in your own words is the key part of taking notes. don’t just copy things down, convert them into your own way of talking, your own vocabulary, no matter how dumb and unprofessional it sounds.

don’t let the “studyblr aesthetic” fool you. studying doesn’t have to be pretty. summaries and notes can be messy as long as they’re comprehensible. you can always rewrite and reorganize them later. (honestly, you better do. and you better keep them.)

don’t throw away the papers you’ve solved your problems in. staple them to the fucking textbook. you need to see them constantly. cause you’ll need reminders of how far you’ve came, when you’re feeling discouraged.

don’t be an armchair analyst for your issues. if you have an idea then act on it.

remember: the exact point where it becomes difficult, is where your growth begins. take a deep breath, and try to focus on the paragraph in front of you.

get off your high horse and understand that if you’re a zero, you won’t go to 100 in a couple of days. first, you’ll need to reach 30, then from 30 to 60, and then from 60 to 90. nobody is 100 everyday. that happens very rarely.

you need to have fun everyday. you need to have peaceful time every single day. even on exam night. especially on exam night, actually. so make sure you’ve studied enough so you can have some time to yourself.

once you’re on a roll and in need of some challenge to stay on track, start writing down your studying hours. tell yourself you’re not allowed to do less than 80% of what you did yesterday. whatever the hell it was, even just one hour. so if yesterday you really studied for like, say 8 hours, today your goal is to study for at least 6 and a half hours. if you can’t keep up with that, make it 70%, or 60%. 

be forgiving of yourself. be kind to yourself. even if you bounced back and lost your streak. start again. as slowly as you did before. take your time. it’s okay, you were there once you can get there again.

Hello! It’s been a while since I’ve been here, so I’ll reintroduce myself.

I’m Carla, a 17-year-old from the Philippines. I used to be kotselastudies, but now I’m sisiguhit (also on twitter and instagram). I like bullet journaling (amongst other things) and I aspire to become an animator in the future!
