500 words or so short fic
----
Teru thinks there should usually be more people at a funeral. But he isn’t sure: this is his first time, and it happens to be his mother’s photo among the candles, and he has no other relatives, no other friends. He is not infallible; he could always be wrong.
So he shifts awkwardly in the scuffed pair of black shoes he wears to school, uncertain of what to do. If anyone asks, it’s because he came straight from class, which isn’t a lie – Teru doesn’t lie – but really, it’s because it’s his only decent pair. Whichever relative he gets passed onto might care enough to buy him some new ones. He can only hope.
His current plan is the following. To get into university, to graduate, to find a stable job and support himself. To stay alive. He looks at his mother again. It’s harder than it sounds.
But isn’t this justice? Isn’t this right? Everyone who had ever contradicted him, suddenly six feet under in a freak accident. If he loved his mother any less, he would say she had it coming. But as it stands, he can barely think of her without crying. This is justice, he consoles himself. This is what he should be living for.
--
“You look like your mother,” Misa says. She scrutinises the photo and Teru’s frowning face in turn. “She’s so beautiful.”
Sharing photos of one’s dead parents was hardly a conventional way to spend time with a friend, but it certainly was one, and Misa was anything but conventional. She passes the photo back to him across the table. “I look more like my father,” she continues. “A bit shorter.”
Teru nods in agreement. “Funny - all my relatives used to say I resemble more of my father too. Though I suppose they never bothered to look at me closely enough to make a proper judgement.”
Misa snickers into her sleeve. Teru smiles despite himself.
“Yeah, my relatives hated me too. Loud, not a male, a college dropout, you get the gist. But my parents loved me, no matter what.” Misa seems to quiver for a second. “I wish I’d known that earlier.”
Teru doesn’t want to admit it. But Misa is now fighting back tears, and her eyes are demanding the truth, and the truth is all he will ever give. “Same here.”
They both stay silent for a long, aching moment.
“Oh, God,” Misa laughs out at last, a choking sob. “I can’t believe I’m crying.”
“Oh, but look on the bright side,” says Teru. “You’re young and happy, somewhere those relatives will never bother you again, and I’m sure that we can throw a nice little party when they finally die.”
Misa descends into cackles. “Those idiots genuinely wanted me dead.”
“And look at us now. Still alive, Misa. Justice always prevails.”
“Yes,” she says. “Yes, that’s how I like to think about it, at the end of the day.”
“That’s the right way to think about it,” he replies. As if there was ever any doubt in the first place.

Chapter 2 of ‘The Universe Where I Could(n’t) Save You’ is up!
This chapter was written for day 3 of Mikami Week (prompt: salvation, because what’s a more literal interpretation of salvation than being brought back from the dead?)
Here’s a condensed version of the fic details, additional tags and such are on AO3
Rating: Teen & Up | Category: M/M | Relationship: Kagami Taro/Mikami Teru | Chapters: 2/3 | Current word count: 4,035
Summary: What if Taro Kagami from the death note manga pilot and Teru Mikami went to school together? Would they be able to save each other?

APPARENTLY I ALREADY POSTED THE FIRST CHAPTER OF THE KAGAMI/MIKAMI FIC AT SOME POINT TODAY I GUESS?? I have. Zero memory of doing so lmfao like I was on my way to do some last minute editing but here’s the link. Time to start writing chapter 2 I guess??
Anyway here’s the fic details
Rating: Teen & Up | Category: M/M | Relationship: Kagami Taro/Mikami Teru | Chapters: 1/3
Summary: What if Taro Kagami from the death note manga pilot and Teru Mikami went to school together? Would they be able to save each other?
Oh yeah also the prompt I chose was ‘fate’ but it applies to the whole fic more than chapter 1 on its own

My main entry for day 2 is the first chapter of a fic I’m working on, but I’m worried it might be a little too Taro Kagami centric, so here’s a backup entry with Mikami the whole Mikami and nothing but the Mikami (prompt: glasses)

Mutt
He’s not sure how he’s managed two days in these woods. They weren’t massive, nothing like the forests in other regions, but Mikami was not a man who enjoyed nature. He was dying in the heat, his hair surely growing more knotted by the second, and his skin breaking out in places he didn’t know he could get acne. It was terrible. And awful. And he wanted to go home.
But the DeathNote he kept clutched to his chest like a lifeline was what drove him to keep going, his hands—so used to desk work and writing—turning into those of a better hunter than him. He learned to strangle creatures, learned how to start a fire. Basic things he managed to remember from his days as a Boy Scout.
Keeping the smoke down was a little difficult, but he tried different things. Wet leaves, sacrificing his suit jacket. Admittedly, he cried once or twice in those two days. Maybe more than once or twice.
Grief came and so did frustration. He ate because logically, he knew he had to. He drank dirty water from the creek because getting sick was better than dying of thirst. It doesn’t mean he didn’t vomit or sob or scream into his thighs. It doesn’t mean he liked it.
But perhaps this is where his life was always meant to lead him. Ever since he was a boy, he had not been a leader.
Mikami had grown up gritting his teeth and holding his tongue only until he couldn’t anymore. He had grown up tucking his nose into a book and trying (and often failing) to find his own business. He had grown up with this nasty attitude towards the world and government, always fitting just outside the mold and never inside of it.
And then he had found a real purpose to follow. A man to worship. A man who had not behaved like Mikami had— a man who had taken action against the injustice he saw and had been determined to right the world’s wrongs. How was he to not fall in love? He was everything he dreamed of being.
His shoes weren’t a nice polished black anymore. They were scuffed and mud-covered. Mikami was unbearable to look at, even to himself. He dreamed instead—or maybe he was just sleep-deprived and hungry. Thirsty.

frame of reference
Mikami knows that some people spend hours at the optician picking out the perfect set of frames. He, however, prefers to keep it simple. He found a pair he likes, and now he has the lenses updated as needed.
Perhaps, somewhere along the way, he should have purchased a second set. But his myopia is not severe, and he knows the streets of Kyoto well enough to navigate without them. He is not in any danger of getting struck by a car, and if he manages to get lost he must simply step closer to a street sign to bring the words into focus. And yet, he finds himself feeling rather vulnerable with his eyes exposed to the wind.
He has his beloved glasses stowed in their case, tucked close to his heart in his coat pocket. This morning, the left arm snapped off at the temple.
He hopes that the optician still carries this same frame. It is fairly generic, just a slim black pair, so the odds seem favorable.
The exam is swift. His eyesight has not worsened since his last visit; it has been rather stable for the past five years or so.
He draws out the broken pair, his beloved, and presents it to an employee. She disappears to the back, then returns, shaking her head apologetically. The frames are no longer in production.
Mikami steadies himself as he faces the wall of options. All the display lenses seem to swim together in his blurry eyes, like a hall of witnesses judging him. He needs to focus. He needs to simply select a set congruent with the image he wishes to present. He will find the closest option to his old frames, the frames he's supposed to have.
Teru Mikami is calm and levelheaded. Teru Mikami is righteous and just. Teru Mikami is reliable and responsible.
He selects another slim black frame to try. It is nearly identical, and yet it feels so different from what he's used to. But he has no choice but to move forward. He has no choice but to keep trying.
