Here then gone...the Ohio Spring Racing Series

Wow what a weekend! I was fortunate enough to spend the weekend with a group of people I really admire, doing something I really enjoy and it couldn't have gone any better. Did I finish 1st? No I didn't but that just fine with me. I had big hopes for this season but reality struck when the race flag dropped at the first event in Lake Hope. I am a terrible climber, do ok on the flats, don't have a strict training regiment, and don't count my calories enough. All of those factors lead to an "average Joe" racer that is bound to finish mid to back of the pack.
What's the best part? I didn't finish in the back of the pack with the experience. I met some really great people. I am not sure how many of these folks I will cross paths with in future races but I sure am glad that cycling has allowed me to meet and be around such great people. It's really awesome to have a group cheering for you at the finish line when you have only spent a few hours with them. Those handshakes, free beers, and post-race discussions are things I will always remember about this race season.
For the guys on Headwind cycling and our gals for supporting us, let me thank you for the great experience! Our mutual love of cycling really showed this spring. Waking up at 4:15 AM to go race bikes on the weekend in the snow, rain, and wind truly allows a great bond to form. I have learned a lot about everyone on the team and believe friendships have formed that will last a long time.
It's funny how things can be perceived. Some people look at my bike and think how uncomfortable it would be to ride it, or how much they would hate being stuck on that thing for miles and miles. I look at my bike as device that has provided me with some great experiences and a vehicle to create some great relationships. I am going to do my best to keep the wheels turning in hopes that these two things keep happening over and over again.
Adios 2013 Ohio Spring Racing Series and Thanks for a great time. I hope to see everyone out at Crits or on the road this summer!

Turkey Day Ride
A few of the team members that stayed in Central Ohio for Thanksgiving day were able to meet for our first annual Turkey Day Ride. It was a beautiful day with temps reaching mid 50’s when we finished. You can check out the route here. http://app.strava.com/activities/29138579
We also received our 2013 team kits last week from Champion Systems. Here are a few pics of one of the guys in the kit. Looks pretty cool!

2013 race season here I come!
Today is 130 days from the start of my first race season. As I approach 30 years old I didn't think being involved in a competitive sport was in the cards. Well it is and the excitement is building. This was not my plan when I purchased my first bike over 6 years ago. The goal was to continue my cardio workouts and improve my overall health but with a shredded meniscus and two screws in my ankle the impact of running was making that difficult. The lure of achieving my goals without the impact/pounding of running was all I needed. I bit into that lure and my passion for the two wheeled sport has continued to grow with every pedal stroke. This is going to be a great challenge. The training plan is set and strict.
Competitiveness was such a large part of my character when I was younger. People knew me and respected me because of it. I hope I can dig down and see if there is any left...
