When I find myself in a creative rut... feeling like my work is becoming predictable... I try to go out and break every rule I’ve made for myself. Lucky for me, Sony puts on an annual event each year called Kando Trip I think for the sole purpose of giving us (Sony Artisans and Collective) a chance to shoot without the expectations or confinement of a art director or client. We get to borrow/test new gear, take a model, and just go out and create... with no obligations to deliver anything to a client. In this test shoot with super cool model @queeenkatie... I attempted to break all of my rules. I used only one zoom lens (24-70mm f/2.8 GM) when I typically shoot with a bunch of primes, I shot in direct sun when I typically shoot in open shade, and I intentionally looked for a location I thought no photographer would choose. I just returned home from an amazing time with my #sonyalpha family in New York celebrating the launch of the #BeAlpha campaign. . . “Alpha” can be defined as the first and brightest star in a constellation. There is a phrase I teach photographers at my workshops. “Be First, Be Bold, or Be Forgotten!” This is key to creating a brand that stands out in a competitive & saturated marketplace. Sony believed that they could break the mold & create a completely new camera that not only replaces the old, but revolutionizes the way photographers think and shoot. . . If you have not tried a Sony mirrorless camera, you may be wondering what features have completely changed the way I shoot. I’ll list a couple of big ones here: Eye Autofocus - at the push of a button, Eye-AF locks focus to my subject’s closest eye freeing me up to compose and time my shot. This not only helps me while shooting... but also eliminates that super time consuming process of zooming into photos during the editing process to check for proper focus on the eyes. Truly life-changing! EVF (Electronic View Finder) - a tiny screen inside my viewfinder that displays my image in real time with all settings applied BEFORE I even press the shutter! No more test shots!! This ALSO gives me a full time live-view experience for seamless switching between my view finder and tilting monitor for shooting from the hip or overhead! It’s a BIG deal! I hear that Nikon and Canon both have finally admitted that mirrorless is the future. Six years after Sony... they are launching their own versions. They are definitely not first... but at least they are bold enough to admit that they were wrong about the future of pro cameras! #BeAlpha This post goes out to @garyfong for introducing me to @sonyalpha cameras 4 years ago. When I thought there was no reason to switch from a DSLR, he shoved an early model A-mount Sony in my face and completely blew my mind. That dude always know what’s next in photography. And if you haven’t heard… Sony is now officially No. 1 in full-frame interchangeable lens camera sales in both $ and units! (And has been for the last 6 months!) Killing it!!! I also want to give a big shoutout to @kaylalindquist and the amazing team at Sony! And to all of my fellow Sony Artisans, Sony Collective, staff, super smart Sony Engineers and all of you early-adopters out there for your ability to see the future and for having the guts to challenge the status quo in photography by adopting a technology even before it was entirely developed or ready for the pro market.
