Mike Cope Racing, Merrill Podium at Road Atlanta
MCR faced challenges head on at Michelin Raceway
Braselton, GA (March 27, 2022)— It was a challenging, yet positive weekend for the Mike Cope Racing team as they traveled straight from the Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval, south to Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta. Consistency and perseverance proved to be the key as both attributes gained Thomas Merrill his second podium finish of the season.
Thomas Merrill in the #26 Bridgehaul LLC/ HP Tuners/ Cope Race Cars Ford Mustang qualified P6 for the Atlanta event. Never quite throwing down a lap to break the top 3 all weekend, the team worked on set up to gain where they were lacking in horsepower. Merrill kept the nose clean, avoided a few close calls and hit all his marks to bring home his Bridgehaul/HP Tuners ride P3. An overall great points day for Merrill and the Mike Cope Racing team.
Keith Prociuk earned the most improved finishing position for Mike Cope Racing. The #9 HP Tuners Mustang began the day in the 21st starting spot and drove his way to finish out the day P12. Just shy of a top 10 finish, Prociuk left the bad luck in Charlotte and maintained a steady pace, gaining valuable seat time at Michelin Raceway.
Darin Mock was on his way to another top 10 finish of the season as he took the white flag; however, a driver error sent the Rookie of the Year contender for a spin and ended the day for Mock in P22. We all know that’s racing, mistakes happen. Mock drove an outstanding race, and while the results may not show it- the proof is in the drive. Keep an eye on the #51 AAN Adjusters Ford Mustang as he continues to chase the podium (and the ROTY title) in 2022.
Ty Young’s race at Charlotte ended before it began with front end damage that eliminated him after only one lap; however, the MCR team made the repairs and got Young’s #22 Ty J. Young Wealth Management Ford Mustang back on track at Michelin Raceway. Starting P32, Young ran into brake line issues. The team was able to fix the problem on pit lane and get Young back on the track to gain some much-needed Rookie of the Year points. Young came home P31. Due to the back-to-back events, Young’s beautiful yellow Mustang dawned a white nose, but will be back to pristine condition as we head to California in a month.
Jim Gallaugher can’t seem to shake the bad luck that has followed him to the first three races of the 2022 TA2 season. After an eye injury held him back from competing at the roval, Gallaugher was ready to strap back into his #16 Waypointe Ventures Ford Mustang at Road Atlanta. Unfortunately, Gallaugher ran into battery issues at the start of the weekend- and then fell under the weather for the main event brining home the #16 in 39th position.
Honorable mentions go out to Brent Crews and Cameron Lawrence in their Cope Race Cars.
Brent Crews and the Nitro Motorsports team of Nick Tucker drove an impressive race bringing the #70 home P2, just shy of the top spot. The talented Crews is one to watch as the young gun sets his eyes on the top of the podium in California.
Cameron Lawrence brought his Franklin Street Apparel/ Cope Race Car home P5 at Road Atlanta. Lawrence and the Showtime Motorsports team worked hard to get the car where it needed to be, and Lawrence did his part to bring the team a well deserved Top 5 finish.
Here’s a look at where the rest of the Cope Race Cars ended up at Road Atlanta:
P10 Elias Anderson
P16 Tom Sheehan
P25 Bruce Raymond
P26 Danny Lowry
P29 Matt Gray
P36 Aaron Pierce
P37 Tim Gray
Another roller coaster ride for this five-car team, as we pick up one more, and head to the West Coat next month with a team of 6 for the back-to-back race weekend at the iconic Laguna Seca and a first time visit for the national tour to Sonoma.
The Trans Am presented by Pirelli TA2 series heads to the West Coast next month with their first stop in Laguna Seca before heading North to Sonoma. Until then, tune into CBS Sports Network on Sunday, April 3rd at 5:30 pm to watch what you just read about as they air the rebroadcast of the event at Road Atlanta.

Mike Cope Racing has Mixed Results at Roval
From top 10’s to DNS’s, MCR faced it all in Charlotte
Charlotte, NC (March 20, 2022)— The Charlotte Roval saw ups and downs for the Mike Cope Racing team. From a top 10 finish to a DNS, the results didn’t reflect the potential of these Cope Cars. At the end of the day, the drivers earned valuable seat time with all cars in one piece as we head to Road Atlanta in just a few days.
Darin Mock in the #51 AAN Adjusters Ford Mustang was the top finisher under the Mike Cope Racing banner. Starting P14, Mock showed consistency throughout the race moving up steadily as the laps clicked by. The Charlotte Roval is Mock’s home track and coming home P10 in front of friends and family made for icing on the cake of a great weekend and solid points run.
Matt Parent started P26 and gained the most spots of all the drivers under the tent. After a first lap spin following contact with teammate Ty Young, Parent’s #14 Venture General Contracting Mustang collected himself and his car to come back to a P17 finish.
Keith Prociuk’s #9 HP Tuners Ford Mustang ended the day P18, directly behind teammate Matt Parent. Prociuk encountered issues with his steering rack coming loose. Unfortunate circumstance as Prociuk had a fast race car with top 10 potential.
Championship contender, Thomas Merrill took the #26 Bridgehaul/HP Tuners Ford Mustang from P6 to P3 before running over debris which knocked a brake line loose. Merrill, with podium potential, ended the day P20.
Ty Young qualified P25 in his #22 Ty J. Young Wealth Management Ford Mustang, but first lap contact with teammate, Matt Parent, damaged the radiator and ended his day early. Young came home P28.
Jim Gallaugher suffered an eye injury during practice on Friday sending him to the infield care center. Unfortunately, the #16 Waypointe Ventures Ford Mustang had to sit out the race event to allow for some healing. Gallaugher took on the role as team cheerleader for the remainder of the event and hopes to be completely healed in time for Road Atlanta in just a few days.
Despite the roller coaster ride that was the Charlotte Roval, the MCR team gained valuable seat time and are taking all cars in one piece to Round 3 at Road Atlanta.
The Trans Am presented by Pirelli TA2 series rolls straight to Road Atlanta this weekend with load in scheduled for Wednesday, March 23rd. Two test sessions are scheduled for Thursday, March 24th. The weekend officially kicks off on Friday, March 25th with practice and qualifying. The main event will be Saturday, March 26th at 1:00pm EST. Watch for FREE as Trans Am streams LIVE on YouTube. Mike Cope Racing Ready for the Roval
MCR drivers eager to strap in and try out the Charlotte Roval with Chicane Config
Charlotte, NC (March 17, 2022)— Mike Cope Racing goes from the flat lands of Sebring to the Charlotte Roval Chicane. Six cars fill the MCR tent with Cope Chassis making up 40% of the field in round 2 of the Trans Am Series Presented by Pirelli TA2 season. Because the first trip to the Roval was a ProAm event, for many, this will be their first time taking on the chicane.
Thomas Merrill, Keith Prociuk, Darin Mock, Jim Gallaugher, Ty Young and Matt Parent hit the track today two test sessions. All drivers are hoping to improve on the rough start experienced at Sebring. From car swaps and carnage to consistency and podiums, the MCR team experienced it all at the season opener.
Thomas Merrill comes off a podium finish at Sebring, hoping to continue the momentum in Charlotte. The Bridgehaul/ HP Tuners #26 has the pilot to make it happen.
Keith Prociuk fell onto some bad luck at the season opener. A victim to circumstance, an unavoidable accident ended his day early, but the #9 is back together and ready to chase the podium.
Rookie of the Year contender, Darin Mock calls North Carolina home and he hopes to do it big for his hometown crowd. Making his first appearance in a TA2 car at the Charlotte Roval, Mock has his eyes set on taking the #51 AAN Adjusters Ford Mustang to the front of the field this weekend. Consistency is key and Mock has proven he knows how to hit his marks.
Jim Gallaugher hopes the luck of the Irish is on his side this weekend. Sebring saw Gallaugher take a hard hit during qualifying which cosmetically totaled his #16 and required a back up car. Fellow Cope Chassis driver, Tom Sheehan, offered up his back up car so that Gallaugher could put in a solid run for point purposes. Heading to Charlotte, Gallaugher’s car is back in one piece thanks to the hard-working Mike Cope Racing crew… and he’s ready for some luck at the roval.
Ty Young is another driver under the Mike Cope Racing tent that is running for Rookie of the Year. As goes for most, Young is making his first attempt at the Charlotte Roval and has high hopes for the weekend. Young has a passion for TA2 and the power these cars unleash. His goal is to take the advice of his driver coach and gather speed every time he hits the track.
Last, but certainly not least, Matt Parent makes his second start of the season. Parent faces the challenge of being a bit under power this weekend, but his goal is as much seat time as possible. As some may recall, Parent had to take the majority of the 2020 and 2021 seasons off due to work demands but is ready to run most of the 2022 season. Following Charlotte, Parent will be giving the #16 Venture Contracting Mustang a break before strapping back in for the back-to-back California race weekends.
The Trans Am presented by Pirelli TA2 weekend starts now. Practice and Qualifying are scheduled for Friday, March 18th with the main event on Saturday, March 19th at 12:40pm EST. Thomas Merrill Makes Car Change at Sebring
Merrill to pilot the #2 in honor of late teammate
Sebring, FL (February 26, 2022)— Thomas Merrill will get behind the wheel of the #2 Bridgehaul/ HP Tuners Ford Mustang for the remaining of the Trans Am TA2 season opener at Sebring. In memory of his Mike Cope Racing teammate, Al Prieto, Merrill will run the Behind the Beats color scheme with Al’s name over the door.
“Al should be here this weekend,” said team owner, Mike Cope. “His loss has hit our team extremely hard, but we know this is what Al would want. He was the true definition of a team player, and his physical presence is missed at the track, but trust me, he will be in the seat with Thomas.”
Al Prieto passed away during the off season in a traffic accident. His loss has sent shock waves through our team, but through his passing we have gained a friendship in his oldest son, Alec.
“This is exactly what [my dad] would have wanted,” said Alec. “I’m honestly so happy. Go win it! Channel the spirit of my dad.”
And that is exactly what we plan to do.
The Trans Am presented by Pirelli TA2 main event is Sunday, February 27th at 1:00pm EST. Watch for FREE as Speedtour.TV streams LIVE on YouTube. Subscribe to www.youtube.com/thetransamseries to cheer on Thomas and the rest of the Mike Cope Racing team as we do it for Al!

Bridgehaul partners with Mike Cope Racing for 2022
Bridgehaul to sponsor the #26 TA2 of Thomas Merrill
Clearwater, FL (February 18, 2022)— Mike Cope Racing is proud to announce a partnership with Bridgehaul, a digital transportation brand, for the 2022 Trans Am TA2 season. Bridgehaul will join HP Tuners as the primary sponsor of the #26 Cope Race Car driven by Thomas Merrill.
“Bridgehaul is excited to be associated with Mike Cope Racing and Thomas Merrill,” said Danny Lowry, who has ownership in Bridgehaul along with other members of his family. “Mike Cope Racing and Merrill are proven winners in the Trans Am series and will be great representatives of the Bridgehaul digital transportation brand.”
Lowry is the proud owner of three Cope Race Car Chassis’ and his firsthand experience with Mike Cope Racing led him to this sponsorship opportunity.
“The experience and track record of Mike Cope Racing speaks for itself,” stated Lowry. “Combining that experience with a driver the caliber of Thomas Merrill will give us a team that can challenge for the TA2 championship in 2022. We look forward to the start of the 2022 season in Sebring, FL.”
Lowry also plans to run a limited TA2 schedule in 2022 and will pilot the #42 Bridgehaul/ Bennett Ford Mustang at the Sebring season opener.
Thomas Merrill returns to MCR for his 3rd season with the team.
“I can’t wait to get back to the track with the MCR crew. I keep seeing replay clips of our great win from Sebring last year and it’s getting me fired up to go win some more races,” said an excited Merrill. “It’s been a busy offseason for everyone, but the fruit of that labor will be some fresh equipment, which I know everyone on the team is eager to play with! We’ll have everything we need to fight for the championship this year.”
When asked about the new partnership with Bridgehaul, Merrill couldn’t be more grateful at the chance to represent such a great brand.
“I’m excited about our new partnership with Bridgehaul,” said Merrill. “Racing at a high level is all about having the best support, so with Bridgehaul joining HP Tuners and the MCR family, we’ll be really well prepared. I’m proud and honored to represent them!”

Mike Cope Racing Brings Full Stable to Season Opener
MCR brings seven cars to Sebring, 42% of field in Cope Chassis
Clearwater, FL (February 21, 2021)— Mike Cope Racing introduced their Cope Race Car Chassis to the Trans Am TA2 series in 2012, becoming an approved chassis builder for the series in 2013. Over the last 10 years MCR and Cope Race Cars have gone from two or three cars in the field to over 20 entries. Along with being a chassis builder, Mike Cope Racing offers an Arrive and Drive program with trackside support for all Cope Race Cars. This weekend at Sebring International Raceway Cope Race Cars makes up 42% of the 48-car field, and MCR will support seven cars under its banner.
Returning to the Mike Cope Racing team is series veteran, and MCR’s most supportive driver, Keith Prociuk. Prociuk, owner of HP Tuners, is also a secondary sponsor of the #26 Cope Race Car of teammate Thomas Merrill. Over the years of competition Keith has improved substantially and his goals keep moving higher as we approach another season of racing.
“It’s that time again, time to kick off a new season of TA2,” said Prociuk. “Last year was very competitive and we had some really high car counts. Looking at the Sebring entry list with 48 TA2 cars registered, we’re continuing where we left off, which is great! I’m pretty excited to get to the track and experience the sights and sounds.”
When asked about what he expected from 2022, Keith’s direction is to focus on running consistent yet making sure to have fun.
“Looking forward to the season, I think my expectations are quite simple. I think it will be another great year of close battles, good finishes, and just tons of fun overall.”
Jim Gallaugher will be back behind the wheel of the familiar candy apple red #16, but this year he brings with him the support of Waypointe Ventures.
“I am excited to have Waypointe on board this season and I’m more than ready to get 2022 underway,” said Gallaugher. “We have a stout field of TA2 cars entered at Sebring which means stiff competition. Our goal entering any season is improving and that is the plan this year. Consistent finishes, solid points runs and continuing to have fun with the MCR family.”
A well-known name to the Mike Cope Racing team, but a driver who has had to take the proverbial backseat the last few years is Matt Parent. Parent is BACK in 2022 and ready to dust off the saddle and strap back into his Ford Mustang.
“Wow, not sure what to say,” said Parent when asked about his excitement to get back into his TA2. “I am excited for multiple reasons. Obviously getting back in the car is number one but being at the track and seeing everyone within the Tran Am family is going to be a great feeling.”
“Living in the Northwest and working in construction, the last two years of the pandemic have made traveling and not focusing on work pretty impossible. For me, getting back to racing is a huge step towards normalcy and moving forward. Going to have to take my time, be patient and focus on getting back up to speed, which I am really excited to do.”
Excited is an understatement for Mike Cope Racing. Normalcy is the key. Putting the pandemic behind all of us is the answer and exactly what we are doing in 2022.
Along with Prociuk, Gallaugher and Parent, MCR will also have Mark Ketenci in the #37 Ford Mustang as he makes his TA2 debut. Ketenci will run a limited TA2 schedule in 2022. Thomas Merrill will pilot the #26 Bridgehaul/ HP Tuners Ford Mustang as he tries at a championship run and a back-to-back season opener win at Sebring. Rookie of the Year contenders Ty Young and Darin Mock will also run under the MCR TA2 umbrella.
Former ASA Champion and retired NASCAR driver, Butch Miller, will be joining the team for 2022 . Miller brings with him knowledge that can’t be bought and only learned through years of being around these type of race cars. Miller will work alongside Mike Cope and the entire team to assist the Arrive and Drive program as well as aid in track support to all Cope Chassis’ in the field.
“I haven’t looked forward to going racing this much in a long time,” explained Miller. “Mike and I have always been friends, sometimes rivals and now we are both on the same team working together. I’m really excited about this year.”
It will be another busy year under the tent at MCR but with our seasoned crew members and new additions to the Mike Cope Racing team, we are focused on taking these cars to the podium.
Round 1 gets underway this week. Load in is scheduled for February 23rd, with a test day Friday, February 25th, practice and qualifying on Saturday, February 26th and The Trans Am presented by Pirelli TA2 main event is Sunday, February 27th at 1:00pm EST.

Mike Cope Racing Rookie Drivers Chase ROTY Title
Darin Mock, Ty Young Ready to Race for Rookie of the Year Honors in 2022
Clearwater, FL (February 20, 2022)— The Mike Cope Racing team heads into the 2022 Trans Am TA2 season opener at Sebring International Raceway with two team drivers contending for the Rookie of the Year title. Darin Mock and Ty Young both competed with Mike Cope Racing in 2021 on a limited basis. 2022 brings new goals and a full season of competition between these two rookie drivers.
Darin Mock, the son of Butch Mock- a retired NASCAR driver and Cup series co-owner, will pilot the #51 AAN Adjusters Ford Mustang. Mock competed with MCR in 2021 finishing in the top 10 in 2 of his 3 starts. Mock looks to continue that momentum and build from there in 2022.
“I’m super excited to get on the track at Sebring in the AAN Adjusters Mustang,” said Mock. “I think my overall goal this weekend is to race and qualify inside the top 8-10.”
Modest, yet very doable, goals for the young talent as he kicks off the TA2 season.
Ty Young enjoyed his time in the #26 Cope House Car in 2021, so much so that he chose to have his own personal Cope Race Car built for the 2022 season.
“[I am] super excited to run the full TA2 National schedule in 2022 and feel fortunate to compete for rookie of the year at 55 years of age,” said Young. “There is a lot of stiff competition [and] should be exciting to watch!”
A career best finish of P9 at Laguna Seca in only his 2nd career TA2 start gives Young the confidence he needs as he takes on a full season run for ROTY.
“Racing a TA2 car at some of the most iconic tracks in the world, for me, it’s a dream come true,” said Young. “2022 is going to be fantastic! A TA2 car at Sebring is like driving a fire breathing bucking bronco...for me, its nirvana!”
Round 1 from Sebring gets underway this week. Load in is scheduled for February 23rd with a test day on Friday, February 25th, practice and qualifying on Saturday, February 26th and The Trans Am presented by Pirelli TA2 main event is Sunday, February 27th at 1:00pm EST.

Mike Cope Racing Heads to COTA for TA2 Season Finale
MCR hopes to finish the season how it started with a trip to victory lane
Clearwater, FL (November 5, 2021) — The 2021 Trans Am TA2 season started out on top for Mike Cope Racing with Thomas Merrill taking his #81 HP Tuners/ Cope Race Cars Ford Mustang to victory lane. The Cope tent at Sebring brought with it new faces and veteran talent, all of which are returning with the team at the season finale at Circuit of the Americas. A true testament to what MCR has to offer, consistency that generates the loyalty of the team.
Thomas Merrill, Keith Prociuk, Jim Gallaugher, Ty Young and Al Prieto will round out the season with MCR at COTA with all 5 drivers planning to return to the stable for 2022. But before we get ahead of ourselves with next year’s plans, let’s talk about what we can expect for this COTA race weekend.
The #81 of Thomas Merrill has been strong every race. Mechanical gremlins took their toll on Merrill mid-season; however, Merrill was still able to podium in 6 of his 10 races in 2021. Despite car swaps and a missed race, Merrill holds on to P4 in the points standings only 3 points shy of P3. A win at COTA could help solidify a top 3 in the points standings to end the 2021 season.
Keith Prociuk and Jim Gallaugher are both coming off impressive top 10 finishes at VIR. Prociuk has seen his fair share of P6 this season and hopes to break into the top 5 at COTA.
Al Prieto represented in a Cope Race Cars house car for the season opener at Sebring, but it didn’t take him long to realize that he wanted to build his own Cope ride. His new build was complete prior to Watkins Glen where he made his “official” TA2 debut. The double header weekend saw a challenging race 1, but Prieto came back for redemption in race 2 bringing his #2 Beyond the Beats Ford Mustang home P11 in only his second career start. Let’s see if Al has what it takes to bring home a top 10 in this impressive COTA field.
Rounding out the Mike Cope Racing tent is Ty Young. Young made his TA2 debut with MCR at Sebring then came back for more at Laguna Seca. Currently the Cope team is building Young his own Ford Mustang for the 2022 season where Young plans to run for the 2022 Rookie of the Year. Until then, you can find him in the Cope Race Cars house car as he rounds out this 2021 season.
“The Mike Cope Racing team is excited to end the season like we started with a great group of guys,” said Mike Cope, team owner. “From veteran to rookie, all of these gentlemen give so much effort day in and day out. They truly making doing what we do an easy job. We can’t thank them enough for their support and love for this sport because without them none of this would be possible. We’ve had good luck at COTA in the past and hope to continue it here this weekend.”
The final round of the Trans Am presented by Pirelli TA2 series gets underway this weekend. Practice and qualifying are scheduled for Saturday, November 6th. The TA2 finale is November 6th at 10:55am Central, 11:55am EST.

Mike Cope Racing Brings New and Veteran Talent to Mid-Ohio
Trans Am Returns to Mid-Ohio with Impressive 29 Car Field
Lexington, OH (June 23, 2021) — Mike Cope Racing brings a tent full of talent both new and seasoned to Mid-Ohio Sportscar Course for Round 5 of the Trans Am Championship presented by Pirelli. Keith Prociuk, Jim Gallaugher, Ken Thwaits, Darin Mock and Luke Rumburg will park their cars under the Mike Cope Racing banner for a chance to step foot on the podium at Mid-Ohio. Missing from that list fresh and familiar faces will be championship contender Thomas Merrill. Prior obligations have Merrill sitting out from round 5, but he will return at Road America to continue the chase for the championship.
Keith Prociuk had one of his most impressive qualifying runs at Lime Rock with a P4 starting spot and he hopes to bring that qualifying momentum to Mid-Ohio. Prociuk’s #9 HP Tuner Ford Mustang is back together after a tough Lime Rock main event and ready for redemption at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
Jim Gallaugher returns to the tent with his #16 Madison Group Ford Mustang after missing round 4 at Lime Rock. Gallaugher hopes to bring a fresh start to the season that has proven to be quite the challenge. The team and Gallaugher look to turn their luck around at round 5.
Darin Mock, son of former NASCAR Cup team owner Butch Mock, will debut his brand new #51 Cope Race Cars chassis at Round 5 in Mid-Ohio. Mock has participated in a few test sessions to shake down his new ride but is looking forward to making his TA2 debut this weekend. Keep an eye on this young talent as he will most definitely be giving the veterans a run for their money.
A fresh face to the team and to TA2, Luke Rumburg will take the controls of the #99 Mike Cope Race Cars house car for his debut with the team. Rumburg previously competed in the IMSA Sports Car Challenge series and is looking to get his feet wet with the horsepower of these TA2 machines. This may be the first time seeing the name Luke Rumburg with MCR, but it will not be the last as this young talent will also join the team at Virginia International Raceway later this season.
Last, but certainly not least, Ken Thwaits will take the reigns of the #26 Cope Race Cars house car, but only for the practice sessions. MCR is currently in the process of building Thwaits his very own TA2 machine and in the meantime, Thwaits plans on getting some seat time in the house car before his debut in his own ride at the Nashville Grand Prix.
The Trans Am Championship Round 5 weekend is underway! The TA2 test session is scheduled for June 24th with practice and qualifying on June 25th. The Trans Am presented by Pirelli Round 5 Mid-Ohio main event will be June 26th at 1:05pm EST.

Mike Cope Racing Looks to Keep Momentum Going at Laguna
Trans Am Returns to Laguna Seca after year- long hiatus
Clearwater, FL (April 29, 2021) — Mike Cope Racing, with two semi-trailers full of Cope Race Cars, heads West to California for Round 3 with the Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli TA2 series. Three series veterans and three novice talents will fill the Mike Cope Racing stable with hopes to continue the forward momentum they have brought to the first two events of the year.
Hometown favorite, Thomas Merrill, will pilot the #81 HP Tuners/ Cope Race Cars Ford Mustang as he sets his site on victory at a track he knows like the back of his hand. Numerous coaching lessons taught and laps completed at WeatherTech Raceway has Merrill in the proverbial driver’s seat for this weekends event. In 2019 Merrill took his Cope Race Car from last to first—and is looking to repeat on Saturday, minus the “last”. With a new livery to debut, Merrill hopes its first appearance will end up on the podium.
Speaking of new livery’s, Keith Prociuk will also be unveiling the sister scheme to Merrill’s #81. Coming off a top 10 finish at Road Atlanta, Prociuk looks to step it up a notch this weekend and hunt down a Top 5 finish in his #9 HP Tuners Mustang at Laguna Seca. 2019 saw Prociuk drive home P5 at WeatherTech Raceway and he is in town to do it again.
When Mike Cope Racing made the first trip to California in 2019, Jim Gallaugher was on board in the #26 Cope Race Cars House car. Since then, Jim has built his very own Cope Race Car, competed in the entire 2020 TA2 National Tour, and took home the 2020 TA2 West Coast Championship. The start of the 2021 season has not seen the best of luck come Gallaugher’s way, but Jim is looking to turn that all around this weekend at Laguna. With a full field of 38 cars entered, Gallaugher looks to get his best finish of the season and officially shake that monkey off his back.
Along with our Arrive and Drive regulars, MCR brings three new talents to Laguna Seca- Ty Young, Bob Accardo and Walt Brown, Jr.
The name, Ty Young, may sound familiar as he made his Trans Am TA2 debut with MCR at the 2021 season opener at Sebring coming home just one position shy of a Top 10 finish. Young will get back behind the wheel of the #26 Cope Race Cars house car for the second time this season to see what he can do. Leaving the nerves in Sebring, Young is ready to capture the best finish of his TA2 career.
Bob Accardo makes his TA2 debut in the #18 Cope Race Cars house car. This is a long time coming for Accardo who was originally signed up to race with MCR in 2020, but with the forced cancellation his TA2 debut was pushed out. More than ready to see what these TA2 cars can do, Accardo is excited and anxious to make his debut in front of local family and friends.
Walt Brown, Jr. is the last of the Mike Cope Racing house cars entered into this weekends event. Brown will take over the controls of the #99 Cope House Car. We are excited to get Brown behind the wheel and working with our driver coach to discover the power of our Cope TA2 cars.
The Trans Am TA2 Round 3 weekend is underway! Practice and qualifying get underway Friday, April 30th and The Trans Am presented by Pirelli TA2 Feature Race is May 1st at 4:10pm EST (1:10PM Pacific).
For the latest updates on the entire Mike Cope Racing team, make sure to follow along on social media. We will be updating you on all the action throughout this weekend on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Give us a follow, @mikecoperacing on all platforms.

Mike Cope Racing Ready to Dominate 2021
Familiar faces, fresh wraps, and a few first timers join MCR at Sebring.
Clearwater, FL (February 16, 2021)— In over 30 years of being in the business, MCR has never faced a year like 2020. None of us have. To say goodbye to 2020 and hello to 2021 has been a breath of proverbial fresh air. To come out stronger, and more determined than any year prior, is a true blessing.
Mike Cope Racing welcomes a strong presence of talented drivers under the tent for the Round 1 TA2 season opener at Sebring International Raceway in Sebring, Florida, February 20th and 21st.
Thomas Merrill will bring his skill and professionalism back to MCR driving the #81 HP Tuners/ Cope Race Cars Ford Mustang. Merrill will, once again, proudly represent HP Tuners as they become primary sponsor for the 2021 season.
Back with a continued desire to win and steadfast loyalty to MCR, Keith Prociuk returns to Mike Cope Racing for the 7th consecutive season. The switch to a Ford Mustang in 2020 gave Prociuk some of the best finishes of his career and he hopes to continue the trend into 2021.
The 2020 Westcoast TA2 Champion and Iron Man award winner, Jim Gallaugher, hopes to retain his championship title for two in a row this season. Gallaugher’s dedication to the sport and perseverance to continue to always be better sets him apart from the competition. Let us see what the “Western Sizzler” has in store for Round 1 at Sebring.
A demanding workload in 2019 which continued into 2020 (combined with COVID), saw Matt Parent out on the job site and in meetings more than behind the wheel of his race car. But this year, that all changes. Parent made one start last year and that was at the the 2020 TA2 season opener at Sebring. He plans to return for more than just one in 2021.
To round out the tent for Round 1 at Sebring, will be two new faces to both TA2 as well as Mike Cope Racing. Ty Young and Al Prieto will make their debut in the MCR House Cars and both drivers are beyond eager to feel the horsepower.
After several years of tracking a variety of vehicles at HPDE and time trial events, Al began competitive racing in 2020 in an abbreviated season running a Ligier F4 with Momentum Motorsports. 2021 marks his first year with the Trans Am TA2 series.
Ty Young was raised in a military family and played football at Georgia Tech. He has since founded Ty J. Young, Inc. Wealth Management. He has been racing cars since 2010 and dabbled in Formula Mazda, Spec Racer Ford, and SPEC E30 Ford… to name a few.
When asked why he chose TA2 Young explained, “I’ve decided to make the jump to TA2 because it looks like a ton of fun to drive the higher horsepower cars at some of the most iconic tracks in the world.”
In other team news, MCR driver and road racing expert, Thomas Merrill will take on double duty as driver and team driving coach. Merrill will offer his expertise and knowledge to our MCR drivers looking for on and off-track consulting.
MCR will also be available for any on-site track support needed for any COPE Chassis in the field. When you run well, we look good—and it is a service we proudly extend to any of our customers. We are proud to see some well-known names to the TA2 series and MCR on the entry list. Good luck to Elias Anderson, Tom Sheehan, Tim Gray and Bruce Raymonds—to name a few.
It will be another busy year under the tent at MCR but with our seasoned crew members and new additions to the Mike Cope Racing team, we are focused on taking these cars to the podium.
Round 1 gets underway this week. Load in is scheduled for February 18th with a test day February 19th, practice and qualifying on February 20th and The Trans Am presented by Pirelli TA2 Race February 21st at 1:20pm EST.
For the latest updates on the entire Mike Cope Racing team, make sure to follow along on social media. We will be following the action and going “live” all weekend on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Give us a follow. You can find us @mikecoperacing on all platforms.

MCRE Reflects on Sebring Opener Amid COVID-19
A look back at the season opener and a look forward to life after coronavirus
Clearwater, FL (April 15, 2020)—As the old adage goes in racing, just because you have the fastest car doesn’t mean you will win the race. Mike Cope Racing felt that saying in more ways than one at the Trans Am Series Present by Pirelli TA2 season opener at Sebring International Raceway. Bringing along 5 cars under the Mike Cope Racing banner—and multiple Cope Race Car Chassis’ in the field—MCR was set for a podium finish, but fate had something else in mind.
Nearly two months have passed since the season opener, and since then all our lives have been affected by the ever-changing virus, we call COVID-19. As the smoke cleared on the season opener, and our eyes readjust to a new “normal” during this crisis, let’s look back at more carefree times. Here is your Round 1 recap from Sebring International Raceway to get our minds off the constant news that is COVID.
Thomas Merrill seemed to be the car to beat all weekend. Diehl-Merrill Racing has joined with Mike Cope Racing to run for the 2020 TA2 Championship and all eyes were on Merrill as he soared to the top of the charts in practice. Qualifying traffic hindered a pole starting spot, but Merrill still put down a lap that put him in P3 for the main event. It didn’t take long before the #81 Diehl-Merrill Racing/ HP Tuners/ Mike Cope Racing Ford Mustang took the lead. A victory was all but certain before a late race caution with 2 laps to go bunched the field back up. As the green flag dropped Merrill jumped to the front of the pack with a massive lead on P2. With only one lap remaining, the DMR/ MCR team were prepared to meet Merrill in victory lane before a spin ended the hope of victory.
“It appears on the final restart the 81 had a bearing in the rear end come apart,” explained team owner, Mike Cope. “The bearing got caught between the ring and pinion, locking the rear wheels up.”
When Merrill turned around and rolled backwards, the bearing was able to dislodge itself which enabled the car to finish the race.
“The race was bittersweet for us. On the one hand, I’m gutted for Richard [Diehl], our partners, and the [Mike Cope Racing] crew. They deserved that win,” said Merrill. “On the other hand, our pace has given me tons of confidence. We showed we were the car to beat, and I see no reason why that shouldn’t be the case at every race this season. I can’t wait to get back behind the wheel at Indy.”
Keith Prociuk jumped behind the #9 HP Tuners/ Mike Cope Racing Ford Mustang for his 6th consecutive season with the Mike Cope Racing team. Typically seen wheeling a Chevrolet Camaro, Prociuk decided to try out a pony in 2020. Taking time off from the driver’s seat during the off season can always pose a challenge to drivers as they get back behind the wheel and Keith shared that sentiment reflecting on Sebring.
“It was fun,” said Prociuk. “It was great being back in the car again; [however], this is the first time in a long time that I simply couldn’t get the car to the limit. I knew I wasn’t on the edge. I never found that groove. On a smoother track like Road Atlanta, I think I’ll do better.”
Prociuk would qualify for the main event in P15 and come home in P12.
Matt Parent rejoined the team at Sebring after a rather long hiatus during the 2019 racing season. His personal business has been BOOMING which caused a lull in his racing career, but the 2020 goals have Parent behind the wheel of his #14 Venture Ford Mustang for most of the season. Getting back in the groove was the goal for the season opener, and Parent did just that. Keeping the nose clean and saying out of trouble, Parent qualified P20 and finished his day P21. Consistency is key and Parent will prove it this season.
Jim Gallaugher is a new face to the Mike Cope Racing banner. Joining us for a few races at the end of 2019, Gallaugher and his Apple Red #16 Madison Group Ford Mustang is on board full time in 2020. Coming off the vintage racing circuit, Gallaugher is just starting to get his feet wet in these powerful TA2 cars. We look forward to great progress as we race through the 2020 season. To add a little inside information and fun facts, Jim Gallaugher and Matt Parent are personal friends from Washington State. The two bring a little friendly competition to the team as they race against each other for all the bragging rights. It looks like the first win will go to Parent, as Gallaugher came home with a P22 finish after starting his day P19. Let’s see who takes it when the season resumes at Indy in June.
Jett Noland rose to the top of the class in his Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli TA2 powered by AEM debut. Qualifying P8 and working his way into the top 5 before contact on the restart saw the young driver taking a spin but regrouping to come home in P9.
“I can’t thank my Mike Cope Racing crew enough for all of the effort they put into this endeavor,” said Noland. “I’m not used to making all of these left and right turns, but they did an excellent job coaching me through it and getting me up to speed so quickly. I feel like we had a top-five run brewing before the caution came out, but that’s racing. I can’t wait to come out here and do it again.”
And do it again he will… for the remainder of the season. Mike Cope Racing is currently in the process of building Noland his very own Cope Race Car which will debut when the season restarts in June at Indy. Noland will be joining the MCR team for the remainder of the 2020 season and we could not be prouder to have this up and coming talent under our banner.
While MCRE hosts our Arrive and Drive program at each event, we also have numerous Cope Race Cars in the field representing the bad fast Cope Chassis. Here are a few honorable mentions:
L.P. Montour is back behind the wheel of his #13 TA2 Cope Chassis to vie for the 2020 Trans Am National Championship. Montour had a very impressive run at Sebring, and we look for big things out of him and crew chief Todd Fisette.
“It’s nice to see our cars upfront,” stated Mike Cope. “They are doing a heck of a job.”
Elias Anderson ended his day at Sebring with a solid top five finish and made all of us at Mike Cope Racing proud. Anderson works very hard at what he does and deserves to be up front, week in and week out.
Tom Sheehan started his second season behind the wheel of his Cope Race Car. Test, practice and qualifying proved successful as the team seemed to get faster as the weekend stretched on; however, when the green flag dropped the main event, bad luck set in. Sheehan ended his day with a DNF, but the long break before we head to Indy should get Jamie Aube and the rest of the Damon Insulation team plenty of time to get the #97 dialed back in.
While the 2020 Sebring season opener may seem like it took place in another era- it kind of did. Times have changed, but don’t lose faith because we will back racing soon. We are all in these unprecedented times together and we will all come out of this together as well, stronger than before. COVID-19 may have put a hold on things temporarily, but nothing is forever. Stay safe, stay healthy and we’ll see you at the races soon! June 19th to June 21st to be exact…we’ll race you to Indy!

Mike Cope Racing Sets Sight on a 2020 Championship Run
MCR to invade Sebring with a tent full of familiar faces and new talent
Clearwater, FL (February 24, 2020)—Just as the roaring 20’s sparked the birth of the automobile industry, the Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli TA2® division will ignite the 2020 road racing industry with extraordinary talent and unrivaled competition.
Mike Cope Racing Enterprises will play a large part of the extraordinary competition as it once again welcomes a strong presence of talented drivers under the tent for the Round 1 season opener February 28th – March 1st at Sebring International Raceway in Sebring, Florida.
Thomas Merrill will bring his skill and professionalism to the MCR tent driving the #81 Diehl-Merrill Racing/ Cope Race Cars Ford Mustang. Along with Concept Parts Solutions, Merrill will proudly represent a new brand on the side of the #81, yet a very familiar brand to Mike Cope Racing, as HP Tuners jumps on board with support for the season.
“We’re thrilled to partner with MCR for the 2020 Trans Am season,” expressed an excited Merrill. “2019 could not have gone better for us and MCR with two wins in two races, and that bodes well for us as we go into 2020.”
Back with a strong desire to win, Keith Prociuk returns to Mike Cope Racing for his 6th consecutive season. This year, however, Prociuk is changing it up a bit and switching brands as he jumps being the wheel of his radiant blue and blue #9 HP Tuners Ford Mustang.
The new kid on the black, proverbially speaking, Jim Gallaugher looks to gain on-track experience throughout the 2020 season while dialing in his skills in his #16 Madison Development, LLC Ford Mustang.
“The Mike Cope Racing team has welcomed me with open arms and I’m enjoying the new camaraderie with my fellow teammates, “explains an excited Gallaugher. “After vintage racing for more than a decade, I am [focusing] on running TA2 this season and I look forward to participating in more races. I consider it a complete honor to run with some of the best road racers in the country.”
After a leave of absence mid-season 2019 due to a demanding workload, Matt Parent returns to his seat behind the wheel of the #14 Venture Ford Mustang. The familiar hugger orange wrap scheme has been left in 2019 as Parent debuts a new look for 2020.
To round out the tent for Round 1 at Sebring International Raceway, will be the young up and coming talent of Jett Noland. Noland will strap into the seat of our #99 Cope Race Cars house car as he gets his feet wet in the Trans Am Series TA2® division. Noland will be switching lanes from last week after coming off a weeklong oval track racing event at the notorious New Smyrna Speedway- Speed Weeks 2020.
“I am very excited for the opportunity to get behind the wheel of one of Mike Cope’s TA2® race cars,” said Noland. “Everyone in the paddock knows the Cope name is synonymous with speed. I can’t wait to get down to Sebring.”
Team mentor and NASCAR winning driver, Michael Self will once again offer his expertise and knowledge to our MCR drivers looking forward to on and off-track consulting.
It will be another busy year under the tent at MCR but with our season crew members as well as new additions to the Mike Cope Racing team, we are focused on taking these cars to the podium.
Round 1 gets underway this week. Load in is scheduled for February 27th with a test day February 28th, practice and qualifying on February 29th and The Trans Am presented by Pirelli TA2 Race March 1st at 1:20pm EST.

Mike Cope Racing Ends Season on Top
MCR Arrive & Drive comes home 1,2 at Daytona
Clearwater, FL (November 21, 2019)- The Mike Cope Racing team is coming down from quite the high following the Trans Am TA2 season finale weekend at Daytona. Thomas Merrill in the #99 Mike Cope Racing house car brought home the victory with teammate Tony Buffomante wrapping up his TA2 career with a P2 finish. While the weekend was anything but void of issues, the result makes for great momentum as the team sets their focus on 2020.
California driver, Thomas Merrill, was behind the wheel of a Mike Cope Racing house car for the 2nd time this season. After dominating at Lime Rock earlier in the year, it was a no- brainer for Mike Cope Racing to get Merrill back behind the wheel if the opportunity were to present itself.
“We were super exited to not only have our longtime friend and past Champion Tony Buffomante back behind the wheel again at Daytona, but the addition of Thomas Merrill and the Big Diehl Racing organization of Richard Diehl with us also,” said an excited team owner, Mike Cope. “We were literally loaded for bear. We were trophy hunting and ultimately came home with another win, and many more to come!”
It wasn’t smooth sailing for Merrill in the #99 Mike Cope Racing car, even though results reflected differently. Rear end issues forced the #99 to miss out on vital track time during the open test day, but once the team fixed the issue it was hard for anyone to keep up with Merrill who had one of the fastest cars of the weekend.
Qualifying P3, Merrill would jump to the lead quickly and maintain P1 most of the race. With only 15 laps in the books, Merrill stretched his lead to a commendable 7 seconds over the second-place car.
“The pole sitter [92 Sam Mayer] made it easy for us in turn 1 when he went too deep in the brake zone and ran wide. He did the same thing in turn 3 where he [unfortunately] collected Buffomante,” explained Merrill. “Once we got into the lead our [Mike Cope Racing/ Big Diehl Racing] 99 car was really good on a full fuel load and we were able to consistently put in low 51’s while the other[s] jostled for positions behind.”
Cautions were expected and mistakes needed to be avoided in order to maintain the lead and bring home the victory. Following one of the final restarts, a mistake by Merrill lead to a pass by the 2nd place of Sam Mayer. Merrill quickly took back his lead before a caution flew that would end the race. This unfortunately resulted in some unnecessary confusion by the SLR/M1 team.
“We knew there would be a caution eventually, so I was just managing an easy pace out front. The late cautions made it more challenging for us. It was important to get the restarts right so I could use the infield to stretch a gap and break the draft. We were able to do that on the first two [restarts] but on the 3rd restart I made a mistake and went a little deep into turn 1, and that’s when the 92 got back by us,” said Merrill as he explained the on track position swap. “I quickly passed Mayer in the bus stop and started to stretch a gap. We would have cruised to the win if it weren’t for a miss shift on my part later that same lap in turn 6, where the 92 again got by us. Fortunately, I was able to put the pressure to him and he made another mistake in turn 3, ran wide and gave us the lead back. Later that lap the full course caution came out and we knew we had the win.”
Thomas Merrill and the Mike Cope Racing team took the checkered for the win, but not without a little controversy. The final caution was for a wreck in the tri-oval, so when it came to the line Merrill backed off for safety as the 92 was advancing for position. Even though the 92 crossed the line in first, the MCR team and Merrill were confident they would be awarded the win. Once the videos were reviewed, Thomas Merrill and Mike Cope Racing were declared the rightful winner of the race.
Hats off to the Trans Am officials for a great job quickly reviewing and making the necessary call to confirm the race results.
Tony Buffomante jumped behind the wheel of his #34 Mike Cope Racing car for the final time of his Trans Am TA2. It was a bittersweet weekend, but one for the memory books as Tony drove an amazing race, despite adversity, to come home P2.
Qualifying P5, Buffomante quickly made up a few positions within the first lap of the race, but avoidable contact by the #92 of Sam Mayer on Lap 2 caused Buffomante to drop to P24. Mayer was issued a drive through penalty for the incident, but only lost a few positions on the track, dropping to P8. Buffomante, with the motivation from his father, Angelo, on the radio, never gave up and drove his #34 to P3 as the checkered flag dropped.
“He [Mayer] just drove right through us,” Buffomante explained. “At a track like Daytona, a drive-through penalty is not big enough, especially when you get a caution, those guys just drive right back up there. It’s unfortunate for us. We had a good car and spent a bunch of time backwards after I spun out. Then I had to work back through the pack. I would have liked to have had the last couple of laps not run under the caution. I think we would have made it interesting. We were hoping for another win here, but it is great to end up here on the podium.”
This drive would not only round out Buffomante’s TA2 career but would award him the COOLSHIRT systems “Cool Move of the Race” for coming from P24 to P3.
Following the race, the #92 of Mayer failed post-race inspection due to the rear wing height being out of compliance. (TARB 14.4 13.3) This would subsequently cause the #92 to be disqualified from the event and Tony Buffomante to take home P2.
Despite Buffomante’s early race incident, team owner Mike Cope was thrilled with how the results ended up.
“It was unfortunate to have someone make a mistake at the beginning of the event and take Tony out,” said Cope. “Anyone that knows Tony, knows that he rarely puts a wheel off and it was just one of those racing deals. It was unfortunate that the race had to end under caution and with such confusion caused by the other team.”
Cope was very complimentary of the #92 of Sam Mayer.
“The young Sam Mayer did an amazing job in the car, he just made a mistake and in racing those happen often,” explained Cope. “Sam has a bright future ahead of him, I am sure of it. We here at MCR wish him nothing but the best.”
To say that Mike Cope Racing went out with a bang, would be an understatement. The excitement was felt throughout the pit area and the Mike Cope Racing team is ready to bring that excitement to 2020.
“I’ve got nothing but praise for Thomas and Big Diehl Racing. We have raced Thomas with Big Diehl only twice this year and came away with 2 wins. That’s impressive statistics,” said Cope.

Mike Cope Racing is Bringing the Talent to Daytona
The 2019 Trans Am TA2 Season Comes to an End in the MCR Backyard
Clearwater, FL (November 12, 2019)— From Arrive and Drive regulars and seasoned road racing champions to road course novices and NASCAR talent, the Mike Cope Racing tent has seen great success in 2019. With the season finale in Daytona this weekend, MCR doesn’t disappoint with its stout driver lineup. Tony Buffomante, Keith Prociuk, Lawless Alan, Jim Gallaugher and Thomas Merrill will represent MCR as they battle to take home the checkers for the final time in 2019.
Tony Buffomante, 2016 TA2 Champion and 2018 Daytona winner, returns to Daytona for the final time with his eyes set on victory lane. This will be Tony’s 6th appearance in his Mike Cope Racing #34 Ford Mustang and his final drive of the year. Last year, Buffomante made a daring pass on Rafa Matos to take home the victory. Can he do it again this year? We will see…
Faithful Mike Cope Racing Arrive and Drive participant, Keith Prociuk, is searching for that podium as the season wraps up at Daytona. Coming off an awesome Top 5 finish at Circuit of the America, after starting from the rear of the field, Prociuk hopes to continue the momentum in his #9 HP Tuners Camaro at Daytona.
This year has been one of growth and improvement for rookie, Lawless Alan. Throughout 2019 Alan has proven to learn quickly and adapt well to the challenges of road course racing. Lawless’ hard work and dedication has paid off thus far as he was able to clinch the 2019 Trans Am TA2 Rookie of the Year title following his 4th place run at Circuit of the Americas. With the season finale at Daytona this weekend, Alan’s goal is to record his best finish of his TA2 career… somewhere on the podium.
Jim Gallaugher, out of Bellevue, Washington, takes the long hike to Florida to participate with MCR for the 4th time this season; however, this race is a little more special. Gallaugher will be piloting his brand new #16 Mike Cope Racing Ford Mustang. This beautiful red rocket will take to the track for this first time on Wednesday and the MCR team is more than excited to welcome Gallaugher to the team as an official Arrive and Drive participant with great plans in store for 2020.
Rounding out the Mike Cope Racing tent at Daytona, is a driver who has already taken home a victory at Lime Rock Raceway in a Mike Cope Racing House Car and hopes to do it again at Daytona. Veteran road race driver, Thomas Merrill will strap in behind the wheel of the #99 Mike Cope Racing House car and see if he can make it 2 for 2 as an MCR house driver.
With the tent stacked with talent, Mike Cope Racing has a chance to not only take one of these cars to victory lane, but also fill up the podium. The action starts Wednesday, November 13 with 3 test sessions, following by practice Thursday, qualifying on Friday and the TA2 powered by AEM, 100 lap season finale at 11:25am EST on Saturday, November 16th. Follow along all weekend with @mikecoperacing on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

Mid-Ohio Brings Ups and Downs for Mike Cope Racing
From the highs to the lows, MCR road the roller coaster of luck this weekend at Mid-Ohio
Lexington, OH (August 10, 2019)— Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course welcomed a stable full of Mike Cope Race Cars for Round 7 of the Trans Am Series present by Pirelli TA2 division. With high expectations for the weekend, and 7 cars under the tent, the team was faced with the highs of a solid points weekend for their Rookie of the Year points leader, Lawless Alan, to the lows of faulty parts, cut tires, and a lack of engine power.
Lawless Alan (52), Keith Prociuk (9), Justin Haley (99), Riley Herbst (28) and Ty Gibbs (26) took to the driver seats of the Cope cars to tackle the demanding road course that is Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
Lawless Alan in the #52 AutoParkIT.com Ford Mustang was the shining light under the MCR tent all weekend. Alan continues to impress and improve week in and week out, and this weekend was no different. Consistent in each practice session and qualifying P10, Lawless kept his nose clean and finished his day at Mid-Ohio with a solid P6 increasing his ROTY lead.
The #9 HP Tuners Chevrolet Camaro of Keith Prociuk had a monkey on his back that followed him from Indy to Mid-Ohio. Struggling in practice, the MCR team worked tirelessly to get the Camaro performing to its full potential. Multiple changes later, the team felt that they had the car where it needed to be for the race. Qualifying P17, Prociuk made his way up to the 9th spot in what looked to be a top 10 finish for the weekend; however, that hope was cut short when a heim end in the rear suspension failed ending Prociuk’s day prematurely.
Justin Haley returned to pilot a Mike Cope Racing house car as he pulled double duty between TA2 and the NASCAR Xfinity series. The #99 TA2 Cope Car is familiar to Haley, and he wasted no time jumping behind the wheel and heading to the top of the charts despite a lack of power coming from his brand-new series choice engine. This engine is new to the series, and the first time ran in one of the MCR house cars. Fine tuning of the engine by the series is imperative for this engine to be competitive. Even with the limited horsepower, Haley held on to a Top 5 position through the halfway point until contact caused him to exit the course and subsequently cut his day in the #99 short.
Riley Herbst and Ty Gibbs, both Joe Gibbs Racing drivers, joined MCR for the second time this 2019 season. Herbst behind the wheel of the blue #28 and Gibbs driving the bright yellow #26. These two young talents adapt well to whatever car they have strapped to their back. The weekend started out slowly for Herbst as the team worked non-stop adjusting and wrenching on the #28 to get it dialed in for Herbst. Qualifying P19, Herbst would have his work cut out for him during the race. Unfortunately, contact with the #17 in the early laps of the event caused a flat tire. Herbst was able to get back out on the track to run as many laps as possible in order to maximize his on-track training.
Ty Gibbs, the youngest driver under the MCR tent, is a natural wheelman and kept the #26 Mike Cope Race Cars house car in the Top 10 throughout the race weekend. Qualifying P7, Gibbs maintained P6 through halfway before the failure of a brand-new wiring harness ended his shot at a top 5 finish.
While we know that part failure happens, contact happens, racing… happens, it’s not the result we anticipate at Mike Cope Racing. Our job is to diligently ensure that these incidents are the exception and not the rule. For now, it’s back to the race shop to get these cars ready to race at Road America. It’s a long drive back to Florida and we hope to lose these monkeys we have on our back along the way.
