me when i remember how drew assumed that jake was using him for status and gifts or wtv (like how zoey was), but jake didn't really care about any of that stuff. like yes it was nice, but drew just put a stop to the bullying that jake so desperately wanted to end.

jake didn't stick by drew be of what drew had, he did it because of who drew was to him. jake didn't lie to drew for so long just for gifts or popularity, but because drew was his first ever friend. the first person who actively wanted him around.

and, i think, that's what jake cared about.

mike stop talking abt tmf parallels challenge (failed.)

anyways this is about jake's relationships with daisy and drew, and even tho how they both did similar things for him, they both see him as two very different people.

daisy was the very first person to encourage jake/support him when everyone else only pushed him down, as seen in the ep 10 middle school flashback. despite that, he still struggles to confess/express his feelings to her, for whatever reason (jake self-worth issues fuck yeah). but he knows that she thinks of him in a certain way - a good guy that was bullied in the past bc of his love of singing but has now made friends and not given up on his passion, even if he doesn't do it openly - and because of that, he does not tell her something important: that he grew up to become a bully to the music club, making him exactly like his old bullies.

on the flip side, drew was jake's first friend and pulled jake out of a bad spot. despite that, jake cannot tell drew the truth about his passion because he fears that drew wouldn't like him anymore (again, jake self-worth issues fuck yeah). but jake is also aware that drew thinks of him in a certain way - a cool guy who picks on other people just for the hell of it - and because of that, he doesn't tell drew something important: that he's always had a passion for music, and it's something he wants to pursue, making him exactly like the people he bullies.

sooo yeah. daisy and drew both did the same thing: help jake and get him out of the situation he was in in middle school. despite that, they see him almost completely differently, and idk i just think that's interesting

the drailey parallels of having your best friend suddenly act way different to how you thought they were, going off with the people you thought they didn't even like, and trying to pick up the pieces of urself after.

like it's different in both their cases, bc ofc lia is putting on an act while jake is trying to be true to himself. but you get it

Misinterpretations of Hailey's character annoy me to no end and I can't fathom how anyone could watch the show and come out of it with some of the takes I've seen on her. She clearly means well, regardless of how she may mess up at times; I can understand why someone may not like the way she tried to give Jake advice. She clearly didn't understand how difficult his situation was, and that's fine to dislike how she wasn't very understanding but I see the most bad-faith interpretations of it all the time? She wasn't really being manipulative or pressuring him. ( Not intentionally at least, I DO think that her saying she thinks they're bad to be around did put a little pressure on him regardless of her intentions ) Again, she maybe wasn't handling this as best as she could but what bothers me is thinking she had bad intentions behind this when she clearly didn't. ( + Unrelated a little, I do prefer that she wasn't perfect with responding to Jake venting! I hate when characters are suddenly therapists who can understand how exactly to help another character who is reaching out when the character isn't anything like a therapist. Hailey is a random sixteen-year-old girl, she doesn't really know how to deal with her own problems; What she says is very realistic to me! ^_^ ) The line "Sooner or later, Jake, you'll have to decide for yourself. Not me, not Drew, but you." is misunderstood quite a bit, Rosy did make a comment on this; "what Hailey is referring to here is Jake staying in or leaving the club. NOT choosing friends/a side. In context, it's only about Jake thinking of quitting after the competition due to pressure, which she is upset by." How exactly this got interpreted as being about his friendships with Drew/Hailey I do understand, but I don't understand seeing it as her pressuring Jake when she's making it clear she wants this to be HIS decision. She doesn't want what she or Drew might think to influence his decision, it should just be up to him. Again, again: My point is not that Hailey did nothing wrong at all or that she didn't make any mistakes, it's that she means well and I don't get how people think of her with bad intentions. That's all ( Sorry if this is too long lol, I'm just very passionate about my silly gacha show aha )

GOD!! i hate it when drew builds a relationship with a person w blond(e) and pink hair, and it's shown that he buys them things and gets them gifts, that they seem to appreciate, but secretly that person is harbouring a secret that is so big that it ruined the foundation of the relationship and now it's unknown if the damage it caused can be repaired!!!

idk smth abt how jake and zoey wanted to ruin drew's relationship with the other in a way? jake telling drew abt zoeys cheating (it was mainly for the reason of ruining something for drew rather than zoey, bc yknow at that point jake thought drew sent the recording BUT YKWIM) vs. zoey exposing the recording and going "i can pray he'll finally friend-dump that music freak soon."

bc ik drake/droey had their parallels (i think they were a part of the reason why drew thought jake was manipulating/taking advantage/using him, bc that's what zoey did) BUT OKAYYYY thinking abt it as a whole is rlly fucked up

my stupid, messy, and long-winded thoughts on jake having a crush on drew

to get it out of the way LOL: CANONICALLY, jake doesn't have a crush on drew. obviously. BUT this is just me taking how jake acts and trying to answer the question "but what if he did haha" bc im delusional like that. that's also why this essay is a lot more casual than my other ones (not much shorter tho, SORRY ABT THAT). probably won't talk abt canon events as much (other than the drakeup), but still lmao

ME, PERSONALLY, i think that jake would develop a crush on drew probably around freshman year-ish. bc, as ive said before, drew was the first person to want to be jake's friend. im sure it meant a lot to jake, especially bc we can assume that it was drew who talked to/approached jake first!!

(and lol, if jake started crushing on daisy bc she was the first person encourage him in middle school, itd only be natural for him to develop a crush on drew after he defended him from bullies, bought him things, and in general was his first close friend???? jk LMAO, but the point still stands)

i think the way jake would go about his feelings... he simply wouldn't do anything about them... besides hide them away and act like they were never there. but then again, that shit wouldn't work out, bc those feelings are so engrained in him.

bc jake really cares about what drew thinks, which is why he kept quiet about his past and his passion. and the crush would definitely be a part of that. like it's smth jake would view as "bad", and he would think that it's just an additional reason for drew to drop him. that's why, i think, he'd never purposely act on his feelings or anything. maybe the occasional gay thing will slip out of his mouth when drew's not around to hear it, but nothing actually intentional?

jake hid his passion for music and his crush from drew so they would be able to stay friends. bc, to him, it was the only way that drew would ever "like him back", even if it wasn't romantically. (he's wrong ofc, bc drew has a massive boycrush on him. but jake doesn't know that)

basically, all of that basically means that the one thing jake didn't want is for drew to call him a freak/for drew to leave. it just sucks i guess, bc everything jake did to make that not happen... became the exact reasons why it did happen.

and if we're gonna talk abt canon some more... i think this crush would add to jakes internal conflict throughout the series. like yeah. jakes got the club and he can be his full self with them, but since drew is his first friend (who he developed feelings for!!!), he finds it hard to let him go. which is why he sort of tries to defend/excuse the jomies, up until ep7 ("they're still my friends ... they're not like that all the time.")

like yeah, it's all about your best friend making fun of you for cringey memories and phases, but it's also about how he was with you that whole time. how even though he'll poke fun of you, you still trust him enough to be fully you, because you know he's not actually being serious.

it's about how you've been friends for years, but your dynamic is still the same, like your friendship isn't something that fades. and you probably can't really remember what life was like before he was in it anyway.

it's about how you're eachother's closest friend, but you never really have to say that out loud. bc its so obvious to him that you care about him, and it's so obvious to you that he cares about you. and its SOOOO obvious to everyone else and they're all sick of you.

yeah. henriam is crazy to me bc how do u manage to be one of the closest relationships in the series (/hj...) and also be megachad9000 and walmartdeku. im normal abt them

drew, jake, and lia... jesus christ. i feel the need to clarify that the duos i name are not necessarily romantic but the parallels between them are so insane.

jia parallels in the way that they changed themselves and pretended to be someone theyre not bc they were so tired of being bullied. and also how jake thought good of drew, but couldn't tell him bc how their friendship was; and lia thought good of hailey, but couldn't tell her because the stopped being friends in the first place.

dria parallels in... just SO many ways LMFAO them both getting angry/frustrated once jake spends more time w the club. them both getting screwed over by zoey. them both breaking it off with one of their closest friends, and feeling as if they have to resign themselves to the situation bc they're too scared/unsure how to make the first move in redemption.

its probably not intentional but i love how lia parallels both jake and drew, esp in the context of hailia. bc lia, like drew with jake, was the one to drop hailey in order to change who she was, because she, like jake, just wanted to be liked. but later, she comes to regret her decision, and listen. we don't know about drew's feelings after the drakeup but regret will get his ass i swear. anyway LOL. but also lia blames herself for her and hailey's friendship ending, which i feel like jake would do as well

the natural place to start talking about jake's feelings about drew is near the start of their friendship: the freshman scene in ep9. i think this scene (and ep11) is one of the few points where you can really tell what jake thinks of drew. and to sum it up, he thinks pretty highly of him.

it's never super obvious, but when you think about it, drew really meant so much to jake. because drew was really jake's first friend after middle school, the first person to ever accept him so easily. BUT, he couldn't necessarily tell drew that, bc he'd be forced to open up about his past and his passion for music (which is like. the one thing he doesn't want to do)

and imo, jake caring about drew (and henriam ofc but this ain't abt them) and genuinely wanting to be friends is sort of... integral to who he is as a character, in a way. jake changed himself to keep drew, bc he cared about what drew thought of him. whether or not he was right, jake assumed that drew would bully him/drop him if he ever found out that he liked music. jake didn't wanna lose drew, so he kept quiet and lied. it obviously wasn't RIGHT, but still, it's what he does.

once he got closer to the music club, things got way more complicated though, because jake's lies became more than just lies of omission. and eventually, he grew distant towards drew around eps8-10. HOWEVER, i dont think he was really aware that he was doing it, or that he was inherently being an asshole/bad friend on purpose???

i think that's proven in the drake fight. like, jake lied to protect his friendship with drew, but it obviously backfired on him in the long run ("how am i supposed to know anything about your passion when you don't tell me anything anymore!?"). so jake only actually realised his mistakes, especially how badly he treated drew in the past month of canon, when they were thrown in his face by DREW HIMSELF.

and you see jake himself be surprised before quickly cracking, because he realised that drew was right. he has been lying for years. and it's sorta important to think abt the words here. "if you care so much about your friends, jake, why don't you spit out the truth already?!" ...quickly followed by jake spitting out the truth. not only did (and probably still does) jake care about drew, but he also considered them friends! WHICH ALSO EXPLAINS "nice to know we were never really friends." "that's not...! drew..."

jake trying to defend himself shows that even after everything, he still viewed drew as a friend, and wanted drew to hear him out and stay in his life. like, idk, after he came clean, jake still cared about what drew thought, and hoped that he'd want to still be his friend too.

i talked abt this in my last essay, but jake was so broken up after the fight. sure, it looked like he'd moved on, but the way he thought he saw the jomies at the competition + the right now mep part just kinda proved that he hadn't. and idk, i can only imagine that it hurts - losing your first friend, and only having yourself to blame because you lied to his face in an attempt to keep him.

LMAO SO IDK i think jake sort of did value drew as a friend, and that maybe, just maybe, drake is not as unrequited as people think?? imo their issue wasn't really that it was one-sided, but bc they never told eachother how much they valued eachother (for whatever reason)

about jakes reaction to the drakeup

i've seen people all over the place comment on how jake moved on too fast from it, or how it's weird how he immediately asked HAILEY if she was alright, rather than processing what just happened between him and drew.

HOWEVER, a few times in the series, jake purposely chooses not to face his issues and feelings head on. (eg. him wanting to "focus on the competition" rather than pick if he wants to stay in the club or not in ep 8) and i think the drakeup is another prime example of that.

jake quickly focuses on hailey and the club bc 1. he cares about them, and wants their forgiveness and 2. he doesn't want to think about his feelings on what the FUCK just happened. so by asking if hailey's okay and moving on, he's killing two bird w the one stone.

and as we can see in the mep part (which im counting as canon?), jake IS upset over the whole thing, but only when "lights go down now" as the song suggests. so it's sort of like he waited the longest he possibly could let himself grieve his losses (LMFAO it sounds like drenriam died but ykwim).

ARGRHHHHH IDK i was just really thinking it over bc jake seemingly forgetting abt the drakeup irked me too, but i think i'm okay with this interpretation of it
