I'm going To add onto this, part 1 is arguably the WORST adapted part from the series, and it absolutely feels like they had to rush part 1 just to get into part 3.
Part 1 includes the Aztecs sacrifice scene, an important scene to show the stone mask's function. In a way, it was NEVER a plot twist that the stone mask is a tool to become a vampire, the plot twist is the CHARACTERS discovering that ability.
They cut out an important backstory scene that is a character study of ALL characters, Danny's backstory. Dio's character study is learning that Jonathan has a best friend in the form of a dog, and he is told to take it easy on JoJo. But what Dio learns of this, is that it's an open invitation to TRULY break JoJo completely as that is his best friend, at least that was the idea until Jonathan fight back before he burned Danny, so him doing it was also out of anger. It's a character study of JoJo, because it shows JoJo himself is NOT a nice protagonist as everyone claims he is, it shows his flaws of being an ass, but Danny saving his life shows that he can truly be friends with Danny (plus Jonathan isn't nice as a kid, far from it, but the anime doesn't tell you this clearly, and this backstory is the remaining evidence of it.), it shows Danny is more than just a pet dog, but that he is truly with Jonathan from the beginning even if he was an ass to him. And it shows George joestar is an absent father and he basically tells Dio "I know it's JoJo's fault, but please go easy on him", showing he is no better than George from the part 7 continuity.
They cut out the scene of Wang chan and Jonathan's FIRST time fighting when he is training the ripple technique. In this, we see Jonathan first using the zoom punch and it melted Wang Chan's face. And during the scene where Dio is talking to Jack the ripper, Wang chan shows his melted face to Dio, IMPLYING that Dio started experimenting ways to counter the ripple technique even before Jack died from JoJo.
They even cut out the scene where Speedwagon was using the hammer to take down zombies, especially since it's to show that Speedwagon doesn't wanna see himself as useless and bringing his friends down, so instead of staying behind, he helped out by destroying zombies his own way.
They even cut out some neat lore details, like the 77 rings challenge. Like... Come on.
See I can complain more about part 1's anime adaptation than JUST character designs like Dio. I think genuinely, part 1's anime adaptation felt the most insulting.
If there's any series that you shouldn't be an anime only with, if there's any series where you should absolutely read the manga, it's JoJo. Honestly you're missing out on so much metatextually by ONLY watching the anime.
Think about The World and King Crimson. What do these Stands do? Freeze time, and skip time. How is this ability depicted? By having the state of the world suddenly change from one arrangement of characters and events, to another. Kakyoin is about to hit DIO with the emerald splash, then snap boom all of a sudden he's flying backwards with a hole in his chest. Narancia is sitting in the boat waiting for Bruno, then all of a sudden his mouth is stuffed full of chocolates. The world was one way, then in the blink of an eye it is now a different way with something causing that change happening unseen inbetween.
Think about it. That's EXACTLY how the panels of a manga work. Sequential art showing things and people in one place and pose, then in the next panel they're in another position. We're meant to fill in the gaps inbetween the panels with our imagination. But what if our experience of going from one panel to the next, the experience our suspension of disbelief naturally fills in the blanks for, was ALSO suddenly the experience the CHARACTERS were having IN UNIVERSE?
If the scenario of Narancia shoving a box full of chocolates into his mouth was drawn normally, it'd be indistinguishable from how the scene of King Crimson first using his powers was portrayed. WE would experience it the same way. All of a sudden the chocolates are in his mouth, he ate them inbetween panels. But instead of that "off screen" activity being taken for granted, it's the power of King Crimson. And suddenly the characters are just as ignorant of the events that happened inbetween panels as we are, and become aware of the lost time and are confused by it. The dawning confusion and horror of King Crimsons initial reveal is that the "inbetween panels" activity that we take for granted is suddenly a PART of the conflict the characters are experiencing.
The anime STRUGGLES to adapt this. It simply doesn't work the same way because of the difference in how the media works. When reading the manga, experiencing The World and King Crimsons initial reveal is a moment of the story challenging our suspension of disbelief and weaponizing the format of the media. It's like how the origin of the "black suited ninja" came from old japanese theater where stage hands would be dressed in all black and the audience was expected to just ignore them and pretend they weren't there as part of suspension of disbelief. So when one of those entities that "isn't actually there" suddenly pulled out a sword and attacked one of the plays characters, it was shocking! The stage play was exploiting the audiences suspension of disbelief for a metanarratively impactful moment.
The anime literally cannot possibly replicate this. If you're ONLY watching the anime, then you're not getting the proper experience of JoJo, plain and simple.

Or for eggman, the alternative to why classic eggman is 140cm and modern eggman as 185cm is simply because he is basically the koichi of Sonic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For any non JoJo fan, koichi is canonically stated to be 157cm but the manga depicted him as being the same height as a fucking sonic character.
Therefore, Classic eggman IS meant to be 185cm but is around 140cm because why not. Lol
Tumblr media
(I liked to imagine that maybe every human in classic Sonic's art style is probably depicted as smaller than the modern art style to make them appear cute and extremely cartoony, while everyone in the modern style is just normal height.)
Sorry if I sound like a dumbass but... Do sonic characters age or not? I can understand why the ages were removed but if the characters don't get older then what about classic sonic? Did they age just that one time between 3&k and Adventure ? If Eggman’s an old man then how did he get taller in adventure onwards?
Also if shadow woke up earlier in the classic games he'd be still looking modern right?
It is apparent that they do, indeed, age. Classic Sonic is explicitly stated to be a past version of Modern Sonic. They are biologically the same person from two different periods in time. There has been a passage of time which has resulted in Sonic going from looking like one to looking like the other as a result of that passage of time.
Tumblr media
What aging MEANS for these characters is what is in question. Clearly, they do not age in the same way that we as humans do in the real world. Whether humans within the world of Sonic age as we do is inexplicable - Eggman has very specifically never been given an exact age all of his profiles merely list it as "unknown." But the Sonic characters ages were unchanged throughout the entire span of time that they were listed. Sonic has an on screen birthday in Sonic Generations, and yet he was still always listed as being 15.
The "age" of Sonic being 15 clearly does not represent him being born and living for 15 solar cycles of the earth rotating around the sun. (We also have no frame of reference for how time is measured in the world of Sonic, as there has never been a stated calendar system.) The idea of Sonic being 15 years old is just something that is applied to him for the sake of a frame of reference by human standards. Similar to how we say that one year for a dog is equivalent to seven years for a human, for the sake of explaining that a two year old dog is a teenager in human terms. That categorization is obviously not accurate and it isn't a perfect analogy but I'm just referencing it for the sake of comparison.
Really a better way to think about the way the Sonic characters age is perhaps to liken them to elves. Or, perhaps more appropriately, to fae. They reach a certain age that can be considered their prime, and then they just kinda stop. An elf that has lived to be 300 years old might look no older than 25 by human standards. And a single year to an elf might be no different from a season compared to how we experience one. (Lots of fantasy settings play around with this, Dungeon Meshi for example states that humans who are subjected to elf prisons will essentially die of old age in jail because the elves don't think 60 years is that long of a time to detain someone).
Considering Sonic is likened to being more of a fairy by Naoto Ohshima, I think that's the better lens to think of them through.
Tumblr media
We shouldn't think of the way they age as being equivalent to the way we understand aging in the real world. Although, again, it IS apparent that they DO age. That time has passed in the series and they have undergone a biological change over the course of that passage of time. One could potentially liken the physical changes between the Classic versions of the characters to their Modern designs as a form of puberty, so to speak.
As for Eggman, I make jokes about him straightening out his posture which is why he looks taller now lol. But the truth is you can actually just attribute that to an "art style change." In universe, Eggman's height has always been the same. He has been stated to be about 6'1'' whether he's Classic or Modern, in every version of his Sonic Channel profile.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thus, my joking explanation that he looks shorter and rounder in Classic because he's slouching =P like how Clark Kent differentiates himself from Superman. Posture makes a big difference.

Also side note.. part 6 Dio in the stone ocean anime adaptation is perfect imo.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The hair still kinda has this issue where it did look a bit more spiky, but I'd argue part 6 and part 3 is where it looks the least bad compared to how they drew his hair in part 1, and it at least looks close to his hair style in part 6 itself.
my ONLY criticism with part 6 Dio tho is how they depicted his outfit in the first flashback seen in chapter 48.
Tumblr media
The anime basically portrayed this outfit as the same one from the DIO'S WORLD arc in part 3, but in reality, it's actually a different outfit entirely.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He lacks the heart shape knew pads, the bottom of his pants are supposed to be lowered, he doesn't have his gold cuffs on his wrists, and the jacket is clearly closed (and longer for obvious reasons) instead of open and short looking. The only similarities between the 2 are the shoes and the shoulders.
I get David productions wanted to connect the design with part 3 better, but I felt like it didn't make much sense to do this since DIO didn't wear DIO'S WORLD arc outfit until 1989, a year after this flashback takes place, which is 1988, and I imagine he would be the type of person to change clothes more often than wear the same ones alot. Lol
It is not a big issue tho, and it doesn't stop me from saying that DIO's appearance in the part 6 adaptation is a perfect design. I wish the part 1 Dio's anime adaptation design was just as good ngl.
Oh yeah and in case you're wondering, I didn't like the part 3 anime adaptation design for DIO. But that's more so a problem with the part 3 art style in the anime adaptation more than anything.
Fun fact, I'm a jojo's bizarre adventure fan. Also, this post is related to me talking about JoJo, and... Uh, yeah it's me complaining about a character design.
Am I the only one who thinks Dio in part 1 genuinely looks worse in the anime adaptation compared to his original manga design? (I was gonna use the colored manga as a reference since It is easier for me, but I'll make an exception since I don't wanna have arguments where I talk about the color of a design, just the design itself.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like, his hair is made way too spiky and too super Saiyan like in shape compared to the messy and flowy blond hair he is known for, his facial features make him too... Ugly, like he genuinely looks ugly. While I don't care about if characters are ugly or not, considering dio's whole design is that he is meant to be the most beautiful character in JoJo, I feel like the anime didn't do this well at all, like his weird wrinkles, the way they drew his lips, and... Yeah I don't like it. Also, his eyebrows should've stayed black, since the blond eyebrows unironcally doesn't look great on him. I think the worst part about his facial design, is that his appearance in the manga is like... NOT supposed to be that different from his pre-vampire self at all. In fact, in JoJo lore, when using the stone mask, your appearance changes to when you look 20 years old. (This was explained by dio in part 1 (which the explanation was cut in the anime) and straizo's appearance in part 2), so logically, his face shouldn't change appearance at all.
The weird thing is... He looked fine prior to the vampire transformation!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like, pre-vampire Dio actually looks like how he is supposed to appear in part 1, and it looks semi accurate to the manga appearance. His vampire design tho... Why did they make him unironically uglier? (This is also a problem with part 3 Dio too imo.) Also his hair prior to becoming a vampire at least looks like it is flowing, because in the manga the only difference is that it is shorter (obviously he combed it, he didn't grow it out. Lol) in appearance, while as a vampire it looks slightly messy and longer, but you can still see some parts of his original hair style. In the anime tho, his hair is just badly misinterpreted as looking spiky and he legit looks like a dragon ball character in this style.
Also it kinda is a massive sin that these 2 outfits are cut... I can get why the 2nd one is cut since it is slightly complex, but why was the first one cut?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like, I feel like it would make more sense to keep that scarf outfit since he obviously wouldn't be the type of person to wear the same costume all the time (unless it's for a longer fight of course), and even the manga proves he doesn't keep the same outfits in both his time in part 1, in part 3 and even part 6's flashbacks, yet the anime part 1 just has him keep the same outfit in the parts where they adapt chapter 24-41.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
His main anime design IS inspired by his appearance in chapter 37-41, the outfit in the final battle of both Jonathan joestar and Dio. But like... I feel like they should've done a better job at making it more accurate? His collar with a gem AND his ankle cuffs with his shoes are for some reason now interpreted as a scarf AND knee high boots, 2 designs features that belong to his appearance in chapter 24-28... Which makes me even more confused on why they combined the 2 outfits, and I also don't get why they gave him sleeves that cover his arms when I feel like Dio would be the type of person to show off his arms (which he literally does anyway), and why did they give him armored pecs? He only wore a corset, which he needed to since that's where the scar on his body is at, but why his chest? And this is the only parts that are armored btw, making me wonder why they bother. I do think the rest of the design is fine tho, but I just wish they changed like 4 things to make it JUST a simplified outfit from chapter 37-41 instead of doing a weird thing where they mixed features from his other outfit and added unnecessary details like his sleeves covered and giving him an armored chest for some reason.
Honestly... I think I genuinely think dio's anime design is legit worse compared to the manga appearance. I don't like with his clothes redesign at all (and really, they could've just change like... 4 things on his clothes (AND keep his chapter 24-28 outfit intact) and I'd be fine with it), but his main and most prominent issue is his face. I think I would've had less of an issue with his outfit if they just made his face manga accurate since it looks good on normal manga Dio.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So no, while I'm not big on his clothes in the adaptation... His head design ruins it even more. Lol
His head design is also kinda ugly in the part 3 adaptation compared to his original manga design, but I'd say it isn't that huge of an issue compared to part 1 Dio, and ESPECIALLY to part 1 Dio since his anime design is more popular. TvT

So I want to touch on this because I think genuinely THIS is where most misinterpretation of eggman's frontiers characterization came from.
Tumblr media
In the game, eggman tells sage to be careful and calls her "dear daughter", which sounds basically out of character for eggman to do, making it appear sympathetic (and also kinda stupid too since he knows she is sacrificing herself and he just brings her back anyway). Thing is... This is legit the only scene in the entire game where eggman shows a sympathetic moment. Everywhere else he clearly is the same evil as hell person.
However, say what you will about the Japanese version of frontiers (I'll admit, some dialogue, at least in the base version of the game, idk about the dlc, sounds a bit worse than the English dub. I love the eggman, sage and Amy dialogues in the Japanese dub and think they're superior, but otherwise I can see where everyone is coming from.), but this shows a more in character portrayal of eggman.
Tumblr media
In here, eggman has zero reason to be worried about sage sacrificing herself because she is considered a masterpiece. Never once telling sage to be careful, because again, he has zero reason to.
I think the whole mis-characterization of Dr eggman being sympathetic in frontiers would've been avoided if the people who did the original English dub just changed the scene to make him seem more in character.
Frontiers eggman is so good, but this English dub dialogue was kinda ooc, and I'm definitely glad the Japan version changed it.

Btw, this profile is DRAMA FREE. I'm not gonna get into drama with other users or whatever.
If someone assumes I deleted something cuz I was forced to? Fuck off, genuinely fuck off. I did it BECAUSE of wanting to be drama free. I want my profile to be clean from other users in terms of drama, end of discussion.
sorry you were forced to delete your randomfox post, that guy called me the r-word over me liking a sonic thing that he doesn’t like
I don’t understand why people defend him when he’s constantly causing drama
I wasn't forced to delete it, j delete it by choice because I wanted to keep my account to feel less drama-like and not mentioning every user that isn't me.

Real talk, am I the ONLY one who finds the animal characters not very attractive?
Like take Sonic for example, most people are attracted to most of the animal characters. Personally? I don't see it. I don't find anything attractive, since they're made of fur and they're all animals.
I very much think human beings are way more attractive. Animals just aren't. Plus, the Sonic characters are fucking the size of a child or a baby. That's just not a good takeaway for me, they're TOO small, I'd rather be dating someone close to the same size or taller than me.
I don't get why people find animal characters like Sonic characters attractive... Like at all, they're not. :/
Yes I ran out of post ideas, I'm drawing currently. Lol

Welp I got super bored, so I decided to do some height differences.
Image one is the boom characters height difference from the modern characters.
Image 2 is the movie characters compared to their modern characters (based off of measuring a 188cm man (Jim Carrey eggman), so they're taller than their modern characters by default here.)
Image 3 is comparing modern eggman's canon height (185cm) to Jim Carrey's height (188cm.)
Image 4 is comparing AOSTH eggman (Satam eggman's height should be the same tbh.) to his classic counterpart, by scaling both versions of sonic in this image.

Do you ever look at some artwork accuracy and think "wow I fucked up completely with this."... Well that's what happened to me. XD
It's the height difference between classic and modern eggman.
Tumblr media
Basically the issue is...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Canonically, Dr eggman in the classic games is 140cm and Dr eggman in the modern games is 185cm (not sure how he grew taller but sure.), HOWEVER the size difference i did is inaccurate, because I was basing it off of the size difference seen in the sonic generations cutscenes and uh... Yeah turns out it wasn't helpful after all.
The reason I put 2 blank people in the background is because I'm using it as a height reference and... Yeah, the classic eggman in my drawing is MUCH bigger than a 140cm guy.
Idk if I'll redraw classic eggman or not tho. Lol

Dr eggman's name... A useless name discussion, that should have just honestly die out years ago, because... I'll be honest this is just stupid.
BOTH sides of the argument are stupid to be honest, the American purists who preferred the name robotnik due it sounding more intimidating, and the Japanese purists who preferred eggman due to it being the original Japan vision and also just hating American influence.
Just.... Okay let's just get this over with by describing the history of his name:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the original Japanese version of the games, he was primarily called Dr eggman and still is to this day, he is called that primarily due to... Idk, being a fat evil guy. Tho its also theorized he was named after a lyric from the Beatles song "I am the walrus", which technically isn't far fetch? He did have a walrus like triangles in his classic outfit.
In the English translations of the games up until 1997, he was called Dr ivo (pronounced ee-vo) robotnik. He was named in the USA by dean sitton and the name Ivo was chosen because it sounded similar to evil. I did hear that robotnik was chosen cuz it sounded like "worker" in Russia, but I haven't found a source on that... That and it's "rabochiy", not "robotnik" in Russia that translates to worker.
Then like, idk, around 1997, he is referred to as both eggman and robotnik in both English and Japan. Sonic jam's official bio in Japan (despite its... Weird inaccuracies to his characterization) is the first time the name Ivo robotnik is used.
Now there's also another factor into WHEN he is named in canon, so... I'll make most of the post talking about this (cuz I need an excuse to make it longer. TvT)
In the English translation of sonic adventure 1, they gave him the name Dr robotnik like all the other games pre-1998.
Tumblr media
But In The original Japanese version, he is still referred to as Dr eggman. So... That means he is never referred to as robotnik in Japan aside from sonic jam right? Well... no actually.
Tumblr media
He has the name "robotnik" on screen in his cutscene where he destroys half of the moon and this is also present in the Japanese original as well, not an additional change in the English dub. (This isn't going into maria and Gerald btw)
So in English it is implied that he was called eggman since at the very earliest sonic CD (due to amy calling him that) but didn't change his name until after SA1, and in Japanese, it is heavily implied that he was called eggman since BEFORE the original game's story happened due to them meeting before it. I personally prefer Japan's implications for his name change as it is much easier to think about since he has been enemies already, but it doesn't really matter either way.
Now why did he change his name to eggman? Believe it or not, the information for his name change isn't exactly consistent.
Tailstube's explanation: https://youtu.be/TfYieaXmqrA?feature=shared
He referred to himself as eggman due to being fed up with Sonic's nicknaming him that, suggesting he did it out of pure spite than anything.
BUT.. and I'm going EXCLUSIVELY on frontiers' Japanese translation on the explanation since the English version of his egg memo didn't really help with the explanation at all.
Tumblr media
The reason he changed the name in this game was NOT out of pure spite, but because he actually likes the name anyway. So he wasn't even offended by the name eggman to begin with unlike the tailstube's implications.
I prefer to go with japanese frontiers' explanation for the name change, cuz doing it due to being fed up sounds really stupid imo.
So why did they change the name so that he is called both? It's simple, it's so they can avoid confusion (especially because sonic and tails 2 (known as triple trouble in Japan) used the name robotnik prior to it even being canonized in 1997. Lol) of him having both names, so they change it to him having Ivo (still pronounced ee-vo btw) robotnik while his alias is now Dr eggman (basically now a supervillain ass name. XD). This is also so they can use the name Dr eggman in the English versions of the game to help unify all languages much better.
So... Yeah, he's called both, I don't see why anyone has a problem with accepting both.
People who grow up with USA stuff criticize this decision due to eggman sounding more "ridiculous" in itself... BUT to which I disagree because the name eggman ironically gives the character a more empowering feel, showing that Sonic's insults like that mean basically nothing to him and can turn it around. Plus saying robotnik sounds intimidating is kinda stupid imo, because I'd argue if you think about it, BOTH names are kinda equally stupid. So does it really matter? It's just a name.
People who love the Japan stuff criticize the robotnik name being canonized cuz it is American influence and also that it "makes no sense with Japan's naming system of using your first name.".. first off, that's false as Japanese people DO use their last name after a title. The only reason they used the first name in say, Gerald, is because his name is different from eggman's name, so obviously it is to avoid confusion but also, you don't use the first name anyway until you have a familiar relationship. (And since I should bring this up the reason doctor brief in dragon ball is using his first name is cuz dragon ball characters don't have last names anyway minus Goku's family. XD)
Plus it makes sense to canonize robotnik cuz... Can you imagine calling them "maria eggman" and "Gerald eggman"? It sounds weird to say. Lol plus they did this to expand on his family as he didn't have a confirmed family up until SA2, so like... Yeah why not use robotnik as a family name?
Me personally, I love both names. I do however used the name eggman much more as he was technically conceptualize with that name to begin with, plus I grew up with it, PLUS... Idk, I just feel like I'm more used to it. That's really the only reasons I used eggman more than robotnik, otherwise yes I love both.
BONUS NAME POINTS:
In the USA lore and fleetway lore, Ivo robotnik is backwards for ovi kintobor as he was originally a good scientist before becoming evil.
In AOSTH, Ivo was mispronounced as "eye-vo" which caused many misinformation surrounding his name pronounation. The sonic 3 movie, knuckles show and English tailstube unfortunately uses this name error, but Japan tailstube calls him ee-vo.
In the Archie comics, he was originally called Julian kintobor before changing his name to ivo robotnik... Idk why.
In the 1993 Saturday morning show, his full name is Julian robotnik, disregarding Ivo entirely.
In sonic boom, it's unknown if eggman is even his real name or not due to his father being called that. Either they both have the same alias or that's their real last name in the boom continuity
In the 2020 sonic movies, his name is exactly the same as the games implications, tho as of sonic 3, he still hasn't referred to himself as eggman yet, so right now, it's just SA1 English dub's implications (as in he's not referring to himself as eggman, only his enemies are) for now. This might change in sonic 4 tho.
And uh, yeah that's it, btw.

Okay correction eggman in the games is technically 65.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Still technically younger than his film counterpart. XD
Wait, how is movie eggman 70 years old?
Tumblr media
He is 40 years younger than Gerald.
110 - 40 = 70.
Bruh... Game eggman is still early 60s, Jim carrey himself is still in his 70s, and somehow Jim's version of eggman is older than BOTH his actor and the original game character.
Damn.
